Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Wednesday that two international information technology companies will create a combined 498 jobs in Jacksonville, disclosing the names of Project Quail and Project Liberty.

SoFi, a California-based online personal finance company, has been seeking $1.5 million in state and city incentives through the Qualified Target Industry Tax Refund program as code-named Project Quail to establish its southeastern operations center and create 300 jobs in Jacksonville.

Swimming Pools Are a Highly Prized Amenity Amid the Summer Heat (LendingTree), Rated: AAA

A new LendingTree study ranks the 50 largest cities by its share of homes with a swimming pool. We found that about 10% of homes have pools, ranging from nearly 33% in Phoenix to 1% in Portland, Ore. We also looked at the values of homes with and without swimming pools to show how much this amenity is worth. Let’s dive in.

Key findings

  • You’ve gotta pay to play: The median home with a pool is valued at $469,187, while the median home without a pool is valued at $305,152 — a 54% premium. The highest premium is in Memphis at a whopping 157%.
  • Go West: It’s no surprise that six of the top 10 cities for swimming pools are in the West — four in California and one each in Arizona and Nevada.
  • Hot, hot, hot: Phoenix, which experiences more than 100 days above 100 degrees a year, leads the way with 32.7% of homes having a swimming pool.
  • Sunshine State: Florida is not far behind California with three cities in the top 10. Miami, Tampa and Orlando rank second, third and fourth, respectively.
  • Rain and water don’t mix: Two of the cities with the least swimming pools are in the rainy Northwest. Portland is in last place with just 1% of homes with pools, while Seattle is not far ahead with 1.3%.

Digital Banking And Branches Not An Either/Or Proposition (PYMNTS), Rated: A

GOBankingRates found that 25 percent of consumer prefer banking with a mobile app, though nearly half preferred banking in person at a branch or ATM. Yet 76 percent said they wouldn’t open an account with a bank that doesn’t have a mobile app.

According to Fiserv, the preference for digital interactions (online plus mobile) is 58 percent, considerably ahead of the preference for branch interactions (32 percent).

When breaking out online, though, there is a preference for online (37 percent) compared to mobile (17 percent).

Fifth Third Bancorp is building out its renewable energy banking business, highlighting how the alternative power niche isn’t just for the biggest banks.

The $169 billion-asset Fifth Third recently added three new managing directors to its renewable energy investment banking group. Business Insider Intelligence’s Online Mortgage Lending Report found that the top five US banks – Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and JPMorgan Chase, US Bancorp, and Citigroup – only accounted for 21% of total mortgage originations, which is a huge decline from their 50% combined market share in 2011.

Zurich-based Numbrs is the latest fintech to join the unicorn club (Business Insider), Rated: AAA

The Zurich-based fintech, whose investors include former Deutsche Bank CEO Josef Ackermann, raised $40 million at a valuation of over $1 billion, reports Bloomberg. The latest investment brings Numbrs’ total raise to date to almost $200 million, CEO Martin Saidler told the outlet.

Notably, in contrast to many of its peers, Numbrs has joined the unicorn club not by focusing on venture capital and private equity funding, but instead by relying mostly on individuals and families — 50 have invested in the company thus far. The startup’s app enables users to aggregate their various bank accounts and manage their finances, and offers a marketplace for consumers to purchase various financial products.

P2P Global Investments sells largest position for €250m (AltFi), Rated: A

The £1bn P2P Global Investments has sold one of its largest positions, in Castlehaven Finance, an Irish alternative development and bridging finance lender.

Castlehaven typically provides loans of between €1m – €20m in the property space, an increasingly big proportion of P2P GI’s portfolio.

Binance has launched a lending service allowing its users to earn cryptocurrency without trading, in a passive way. Currently the service is open for only a few tokens – its Binance Coin (BNB), Tether’s USDT stablecoin, and Ethereum Classic (ETC). Annualized interest rates are of 15% for BNB, 10% for USDT, and 7& for ETC.

Alternative Finance is Experiencing an Unprecedented Boom Worldwide (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: A

Ten years after the financial crisis, Alternative Finance continues to exhibit strong growth. Xiaomi is moving into India’s consumer-lending market (Business Insider), Rated: A

The fourth-largest mobile phone vendor plans to launch a consumer-lending business, dubbed Mi Credit, in India in the next few weeks, according to Reuters. It will offer loans of up to 100,000 rupees ($1,451), with interest rates starting at 1.8%.

Xiaomi is positioned as a leading smartphone manufacturer in India, with 70 million mobile phones in use throughout the country. It already launched its payment app, dubbed Mi Pay, in the country in March, which is reportedly “doing well,” per Reuters. For context, in China, Xiaomi’s lending business shows a loan book worth $8 billion.

After years of debate, OCC to offer fintech charter (American Banker) Rated: AAA

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency announced Tuesday that it would move ahead to consider special-purpose charter applications from fintech firms, ending the guessing game over whether the agency was serious about giving fintechs a federal option.

The decision, unveiled just hours after the Treasury Department released a report endorsing a national fintech charter, means fintech firms that opt for the charter could soon be regulated more like banks on a national scale.

Securitizations swell as marketplace lending matures (GlobalCapital) Rated: A

A report out of the Department of the Treasury on Tuesday notes that the growth of marketplace lending has fueled ABS deals in the sector.

Marketplace lenders have originated some $100bn in loans since 2014, with unsecured consumer debt accounting for 50% of total volume.

The strong pace of originations has fueled consumer securitization issuance, with the number of marketplace loan ABS deals ballooning every year since 2013.

Online Lenders and Payment Companies Get a Way to Act More Like Banks (The New York Times) Rated: AAA

Online lenders and other so-called fintech firms — including the payment processor Square, the online lender Lending Club and the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase — have pressed for regulatory routes that would let them cut through the thicket of state and federal laws that govern financial businesses.

Heeding those requests, the Treasury Department released a 222-page report laying out the Trump administration’s view on how nonbank financial companies should be regulated. Hours later, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a national bank regulator, announced a new kind of charter that would potentially free such companies from the state-by-state approvals they currently need to offer loans and other financial products.

CSBS Responds to Treasury, OCC Fintech Announcements (CSBS) Rated: A

We appreciate the Treasury’s recognition of the vital role performed by state regulators in overseeing nonbank financial service providers. And we are pleased that Treasury noted the substantial progress states have made towards harmonizing the multistate experience for industry.

At the same time, we disagree with certain Treasury recommendations. We do not support creation of new federal rules or unauthorized federal charters that would seek to compromise the ability of state officials to apply and enforce state laws. And so, we disagree with Treasury’s recommended changes to the valid-when-made doctrine and the true-lender doctrine, and the creation of an OCC special purpose bank charter for fintech companies.

An OCC fintech charter is a regulatory train wreck in the making.

Microsoft’s M12 joins $ 12 million funding extension for fintech startup BlueVine (Venture Beat) Rated: AAA

Fintech startup BlueVine has added $12 million to its recently announced series E round of funding, bringing Microsoft’s venture capital (VC) unit M12 onboard alongside the VC arm of finance giant Nationwide.

The additional funding brings BlueVine’s total series E round to $72 million, after the company announced an initial $60 million cash injection just two months ago.

BlueVine has now raised around $590 million in funding since its inception, though it’s worth noting that around three-quarters of that came in the past year via debt financing.

Small-Biz Talks: StreetShares on Small Business Lending (Value Penguin) Rated: A

On average, veterans are getting, through us, about 2% to 3%lower interest rates than nonveterans. That’s an internal discount that we give. Comparing us to an OnDeck or a Kabbage, we are probably half the average APR of OnDeck and probably a quarter of Kabbage. They may disagree with that, but that’s our numbers.

Online Lending Needs More Regulation: New York Regulator (BNA) Rated: A

Notably, a group of lenders that is currently not subject to licensing – those making loans between 7 and 16 percent – would have to become Licensed Lenders. As a result, those lenders would have to complete the licensing process, pay the associated fees, and would then be subject to supervision and examinations by the NYDFS.

Additionally, any nonbank that lends to a New York borrower, either directly or through a partnership, would have to comply with New York’s usury limit. This rule is already in effect for servicers that acquire loans originated by banks, due to the Second Circuit’s decision in Madden v. Midland Funding. However, the NYDFS recommendation would potentially expand that rule to loans originated by lending companies organized by Native American tribes, among other situations.

Gusto raises $ 140 million to go after small business payroll and benefits with more gusto (TechCrunch) Rated: A

Gusto, which sells payroll, benefits and human resources management and monitoring services to small businesses, has raised $140 million in its latest round of funding.

The company said it will use the money to add new services to increase payment flexibility for employees. The company launched a new service called Flexible Pay, which gives employees a way to get paid no matter when a company’s pay schedule dictates. It seems sort of like a payday loan, where a percentage of the salary is taken by Gusto  for providing money upfront.

The measure, which passed the House earlier this month and is authored by Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., is intended to allow consumers to benefit from positive information about lease, telecommunications and utility payments in their credit reports. An identical version has been introduced by Sens. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., in the upper chamber.

Four of Europe’s top 10 fintech deals happened in the UK, which included a $250m raise by Revolut, $100m by eToro, $60m by Flender and $54m by Moneyfarm. Data provided by KPMG’s pulse of fintech report has allayed fears that Brexit would hurt the UK’s startup scene, as venture capital firms have cemented the UK’s position as a funding hot spot.

Fintech investment across the world reached record levels over the last six months, taking in $57.9bn across 875 deals. This was an increase of 34.2 per cent compared to the whole of 2017, which recorded just $38.1bn overall.

UK-based neobank Revolut launched disposable virtual cards in March , and has now reported that they resulted in a 30% reduction in card fraud cases.

Disposable virtual cards provide users with card details that get destroyed right after making an online purchase, and new details are made seconds after the previous ones are scrapped. This way, a merchant can’t charge the customer again, as they don’t have the person’s actual card information.

This fraud reduction announcement comes at the right time for Revolut. Earlier in July, we reported that the neobank had discovered potential money laundering activity on its digital payments system a few months back. It informed the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), suggesting that the severity of the issue was high, as conventionally companies just inform the NCA.

Fintech vendors keep reinventing themselves, and banks struggle to keep up (American Banker) Rated: AAA

There were 70 mergers and acquisitions among fintechs in the U.S., Canada and South America in the first quarter, and those deals were worth a combined $3.4 billion, according to a fintech investment report issued by KPMG on Tuesday.

The number of deals fell to 60 in the second quarter, but the total value rose to $5.8 billion. M&A activity in this field is expected to remain “very healthy [in] 2018 on the whole,” the report said.

The investment flow is also breeding new companies looking for bank clients. American fintechs, the report noted, attracted $14.2 billion in overall funding in the first half of 2018.

What that means for all banks is when it comes to tech, there’s plenty to ponder: more options for their front- and back-office operations; more retail and commercial service improvements to consider; more new vendors that will be seeking their business; and more fintech investment opportunities to pursue.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reports that household debt totaled $12.95 Tn last quarter – the 13th straight quarterly increase. As a share of GDP however, household debt stands at 66% below a peak of 87% in early 2009.

FinTech’s market share has grown from virtually zero in 2012 to 30% in 2016. The outstanding balances on personal loans have doubled to over $100 Bn in 2017 from late 2013, with 128 lenders making more than 10,000 personal loans annually. FinTechs compete with banks to originate loans to prime consumers, and FinTech’s originate 30% of their loans to non-prime consumers where there is less competition from banks.

Online lenders pull out the popcorn, as the Trump administration fights to control the CFPB (TechCrunch), Rated: AAA

Republican lawmakers have long sought to reduce the CFPB’s oversight. Now dueling appointments put its immediate future in question. Last night, President Trump named his budget director, Mick Mulvaney, as acting director of the agency hours after its current leader, Obama-appointed Richard Cordray, announced he would leave the job.

To counter the administration’s plans, on his way out the door, Cordray named his chief of staff, Leandra English, as the agency’s deputy director.

Under the law, the appointment should make English the agency’s acting director, though the White House says that Mulvaney plans to show up at the CFSB Monday morning anyway. The White House further says Mulvaney will keep his current job as head of the Office of Management and Budget.

If the Trump administration follows through on its threats, Mulvaney will lead both agencies until a permanent head of CFPB is chosen and confirmed by the Senate.

Student loan repayment programs are climbing the pantheon of employee benefits, suggests a recent survey of full-time workers with student loan debt.

Pollfish found that 23% would gladly give up healthcare benefits for a student loan repayment benefit. In addition, 46% would relinquish paid time off and 33% would do the same for retirement benefits in exchange for a repayment benefit. Also, 53% said they’d consider a salary cut in exchange for a student loan repayment benefit.

Of 1,000 college graduates polled by SoFi, an online personal finance company, 90% were more willing to accept a job offer at a new company if their employer offered a student loan contribution benefit. In the Pollfish survey, 84% gave the same response.

On November 21st, a cash loan platform told the media that they had received a notification from Sesame Credit, the credit scoring services of Ant Financial. According to the notification, Sesame Credit will cease to cooperate with cash loans from December 12th of 2017 due to some of its illegal behavior regarding interest rate setting and debt collection.

Luo, 34, ranked No. 255 on the 2017 Forbes China Rich List published on Nov. 16 with an estimated fortune of $1.48 billion.

Shares in Qudian, which is 11% owned by Alibaba Group affiliate Ant Financial, and other Chinese online lenders have been falling on reports that regulators plan to tighten restrictions on microlenders. On Friday, Qudian said it would cap charges and costs to customers linked to Alipay at an annual interest rate of 24% (see announcement and details here).  Qudian also said it is working to extend credit through its own app where it can charge up to an annual rate of 36%.

Ant Financial, the financial arm of Alibaba, has barred consumer loanswith an annual interest rate above 24% on its Alipay platform.

Ant Financial stated that it has increased monitoring of the financial service providers on Alipay and its credit platform, Sesame Credit, and found some inappropriate collection methods and interest rates above legal limits, according to Reuters. Further, Alibaba’s Ant Financial stated that it would withdraw cooperation with some cash loan providers. Sesame Credit is a proprietary credit scoring system, which gives Alipay e-wallet users a credit score.

One reason might be that European startups don’t give employees as much of a chance to strike it rich, according to a new study by the European venture capital firm Index Ventures. SoFi battles its first major PR crisis (Tearsheet), Rated: AAA

In a wrongful dismissal suit filed last week, a former employee reportedly claimed he was let go after he told management he had seen female employees subjected to lewd and inappropriate comments and that managers canceled loan applications when internal errors were made — a tactic to secure quarterly bonuses of up to $15,000. There’s also talk of a second class-action lawsuit alleging broader mistreatment of employees at the company.

But experts said the extent of the damage to the SoFi brand will center on whether other employees come forward to corroborate the allegations.

Jim Prosser, vp of communications and policy at SoFi, said the company carried out an internal investigation into the matter and challenged the notion that loan applications could be arbitrarily cancelled.

Based on sentiment expressed on Twitter, the lawsuit hasn’t made a big dent in SoFi’s brand reputation. Since the news broke Friday, 119 tweets mentioned the SoFi Twitter handle, 53 percent of which were positive and 47 percent were negative, according to Brandwatch. Compared to the past month, the SoFi handle attracted 920 mentions, 75 percent of which were positive. Still, Terry maintains that it’s not a massive conversation, and the news may have gotten less play with the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, capturing headlines.

Start of a New Trend? Pullback in Subprime Loans Observed (GlobeNewswire), Rated: AAA

For the first time since 2012, originations to subprime consumers declined year-over-year for a number of major credit products, according to TransUnion’s (NYSE:TRUQ2 2017 Industry Insights Report. The report, powered by PramaSM analytics, found that 4.63 million subprime consumers originated an auto loan or lease, personal loan or credit card in Q1 2017. Comparatively, 4.89 million subprime consumers originated one of these products in Q1 2016.

In Q1 2017, subprime personal loan originations declined 10.6% year-over-year, compared to a positive annual growth rate of 11.0% in Q1 2016. This marks three straight quarters of year-over-year declines in originations. More than 100,000 fewer subprime consumers opened a personal loan in Q1 2017 than in Q1 2016.

In fact, personal loan originations declined for all risk tiers, but at lower rates than for subprime originations. Total originations dropped 6.9% from 2.99 million in Q1 2016 to 2.78 million in Q1 2017.

In the credit card market, subprime originations declined by 1.8% to start 2017, the second consecutive quarter of decline. Since 2014, subprime originations had increased at a rapid rate, averaging growth of 29.2% in the first quarters of 2014, 2015 and 2016. In Q1 2017, subprime originations declined at nearly the same rate as total originations (down 1.9%).

As subprime consumers gained access to credit cards, lenders kept subprime credit lines low. In Q1 2017, subprime consumers held just 2.6% of total credit lines.

Auto loan originations declined 8.9% year-over-year from Q1 2016 to Q1 2017. Originations to subprime consumers dropped to 1.10 million in Q1 2017, down from 1.20 million in the first quarter of 2016. At the same time, total originations declined just 2.9% to 6.73 million in Q1 2017.

Mortgage Delinquency Rate Drops to New Low since Recession

The mortgage delinquency rate reached the lowest level since the recession in the second quarter of 2017, dropping below 2% for the first time in almost 10 years. The mortgage delinquency rate was 1.92% in Q2 2017, down 16.5% from 2.30% in Q2 2016.

Viewed one quarter in arrears, mortgage originations remained relatively steady year-over-year in the first quarter of 2017. Up slightly from 1.46 million in Q1 2016, mortgage originations reached 1.49 million in Q1 2017. Largely due to the rise in interest rates, originations declined 28.3% between Q4 2016 and Q1 2017. A year prior, originations only declined 9.4% between Q4 2015 and Q1 2016.

More than 83% of mortgage originations were in the prime and above risk tiers in the first quarter of 2017. Market share of prime and above risk tiers has remained roughly in that range since Q4 2013.

The average new account balance, also viewed one quarter in arrears, declined 1.6% from $223,262 in Q1 2016 to $219,743 in Q1 2017.

Total Credit Card Balances Rise Following Rich Credit Offers in 2016

The latest TransUnion Industry Insights report found that total credit card balances continued their steady year-over-year increase in the second quarter of 2017. Total card balances reached nearly $714 billion, up 7.8% from $662 billion in Q2 2016. The average balance per consumer grew 3.3% to $5,422, up from $5,247 in Q2 2016.

The credit card delinquency rate reached 1.46% in Q2 2017, up 13.2% from 1.29% in Q2 2016. This brings the card delinquency rate above the average Q2 delinquency reading of 1.27% for the last three years.

Auto Delinquency Rate Rises after Years of Non-prime Origination Growth

TransUnion’s latest Industry Insights Report found that the auto delinquency rate reached 1.23% in Q2 2017, an increase of 10.8% from 1.11% Q2 2016.

Viewed one quarter in arrears, auto originations declined to 6.73 million in Q1 2017, down 2.9% from 6.93 million in Q1 2016. This marks the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year declines in auto originations and the first decline in origination growth in any first quarter since 2010.

Total auto balances achieved a new high in Q1 2017, reaching $1.145 trillion. The total balance was up 6.9% from $1.072 trillion in Q1 2016.

Personal Loans Reach New Milestones as Balances Grow and Delinquencies Drop

In the second quarter of 2017, the personal loan delinquency rate declined to the lowest level since 2009. The delinquency rate was 3.02% in Q2 2017, an 8.5% decline from 3.30% in Q2 2016.

Personal loan balances achieved a new milestone of nearly $107 billion in Q2 2017, growing 10.8% over Q2 2016, when total balances were $96 billion. While balances increased, the growth rate was lower than the average Q2 growth rate of 24.7% for the past three years. The average balance per consumer also reached a new high at $7,781 in the second quarter, up slightly from $7,745 in Q2 2016.

Personal loan originations, viewed one quarter in arrears, declined 6.9% to 2.78 million in Q2 2017, compared to 2.99 million in Q2 2016.

Since that time they have shown some solid growth with originations in Q2 2017 coming in at $775 million up from $586 million in Q1. They still have a long way to go before they reach record levels but growth has returned to the first US marketplace lender.

  • Total originations from inception through June 30, 2017 was $9.7 billion.
  • Transaction fee revenue rose to $35.4 million, up 32% quarter-over-quarter and 84% year-over-year.

New Fintech Lenders Encroaching On Business Banking Turf (The Financial Brand), Rated: AAA

Small and micro businesses struggle to get the cash they need. According to the Federal Reserve’s small business credit survey, 60% of applicants obtained less financing than they needed.

And they need money. The top challenge facing small businesses, says the Fed, is credit availability or securing funds for expansion (44%), followed by paying operating expenses (36%), making payments on debt (25%), and purchasing inventory or supplies to fulfill contracts (17%).

Unfortunately, size makes these loans unattractive to many banking providers. More than half (55%) of small businesses needed $100,000 or less and three-quarters sought $250,000 or less.



Can Smaller Banks and Credit Unions Compete? And Should They?

First, while online lender websites may be alluring, small business owners are still concerned about data security and privacy — particularly with these neo-lender startups. Second, the product features among fintechs are not always clearly stated, making it difficult to compare product offerings and costs.

These issues mean many small businesses still prefer to get a loan from a bank. Half (50%) seek financing from a large bank, and 21% from online lenders. And their preference is for loans not credit cards; 86% say they applied for a loan or a line of credit vs. only 31% who just applied for a credit card.

Smaller loans can be profitable, if you approach them in new ways using new tools.

  1. Reengineer the Process with Big Data. With so much data available on small business owners and more computing power, banks can use big data in innovative ways to decision loans. No longer limited to a credit score, big data can analyze the behavior of the business and predict its ability to pay back the loan. Big data also means that fewer applications must be sent to a human for decisioning. Real-time decisioning cuts costs for the bank and since so much customer data is already digitized, there’s less need to require borrowers to submit reams of documentation.
  2. Partner with Fintech. Rather than try to compete with online alternative lenders, consider joining them. IN 2015, J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. announced a partnership with On Deck Capital to create online small business loans. Called Chase Business Quick Capital, it provides Chase customers with faster access to cash than a traditional bank loan. Chase states that the capital can be available in the same day. In the past, a small business loan could take weeks to decision and then fund.

Goldman Tops Banks Betting on a New Type of Hedging (Bloomberg), Rated: A

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. are leading big banks in plowing record funds into outside ventures trying to disrupt their industry, a role typically dominated by venture capital firms, according to a report from Opimas, a management consultancy.

Goldman Sachs has invested in about 15 so-called fintech firms focusing on capital markets businesses this year, while JPMorgan has bet on nine, the report shows. Altogether, banks and other established companies will probably pump a record $1.7 billion into the sector through 44 deals in 2017, Opimas estimated.

A hot fintech startup has amassed nearly $ 5 billion from people willing to hand over their bank logins (Business Insider), Rated: A

  • Personal Capital is a startup known for its free platform, which allows people to plug in their bank and investment accounts to see all their financials at once.
  • CEO Jay Shah says Personal Capital has been monetizing the business by getting richer clients to pay for financial advice.
  • The startup recently raised an additional $40 million in outside funding.

The company is managing assets for Americans worth about $4.9 billion, and increasingly the customers are more affluent, Personal Capital’s CEO, Jay Shah, told Business Insider in a recent interview.

Shah declined to say how many of the company’s estimated 1.5 million free users convert to paying for financial advice from the free platform.

In finance, there are three distinct patterns of fraud: transaction fraud, application fraud and account takeover fraud.

Card issuers lost $15.72 billion (72 percent) in gross fraud losses in 2015 and merchants and acquirers lost the remaining $6.12 billion (28 percent), according to the Nilson Report.

Application fraud is the fastest-growing type of fraud in financial services and happens when a fraudster actually pretends to be you using actual account credentials to open new lines of credit. We can break it down even further into three types:

  • Third party fraud: when someone gets enough of someone’s personal information from a compromised data set to go to a bank and pretend to be that person to apply or a loan or credit card
  • First party fraud: when the person coming to the bank (or other service) really is the person he or she claims to be but intends to not pay back the loan or credit card; in instances of first party fraud, the bank or business is the victim, not the customer
  • Synthetic fraud: when someone creates a persona using fake or borrowed information, like a social security number, and adds other, made-up elements of personally identifiable information like a name, address or date or birth

Account takeover fraud is the final type of fraud (for the purposes of this primer, at least). It happens to people when fraudsters obtain their various user IDs and passwords to be able to access other accounts that involve financial transactions.

Did those new chip cards I got help?
Kind of! Account takeover incidents increased 61 percent to $2.3 billion from 2015 to 2016, according to research by Javelin published in February. Victims pay an average of $263 out of pocket and spent 20.7 million hours to resolve it in 2016 – six million hours more than in 2015.

Community banks stand to gain from blockchain — if they work together (American Banker), Rated: A

Blockchain is most widely known as the platform to house virtual currencies such as bitcoin,ethereum and litecoin. But the uses for blockchain are going well beyond virtual currencies. The Republic of Georgia, for example, voted in April 2016 to implement a land ownership registry that relies on blockchain to verify ownership of property. If the United States did something similar with blockchain, banks could close real estate loans more quickly. Think about a world where ownership interests in real estate can be verified immediately and with certainty.

In this world, the expansive role of the title agent would essentially dissipate (or be greatly minimized), the time taken to verify title would be eliminated and, most important, the cost associated with confirming a title interest through title insurance would be dramatically reduced. All of these results would improve the closing process, both from an efficiency standpoint for banks and from a cost standpoint for the customer.

Technologists are also using blockchain to try to replace our needlessly difficult residential mortgage loan origination processes so that the process, from application to closing, can be reduced from a few weeks to a few days.

To realize these kinds of opportunities, community banks in a region should collaborate on strategies to bring blockchain into the banking industry.

Top and The Best Peer-To-Peer (P2P) Lending Sites For Online Loans (FX Daily Report), Rated: A

A PriceWaterhouseCoopers report noted that though the P2P industry is in its infancy loans to the tune of $5.5 billion have been disbursed by the P2P websites in the U.S. in 2014 alone. According to PriceWaterhouseCoopers, P2P lending could be more than $150 billion by 2025.

Funding Circle has disbursed more than $1 billion in loans to over 8,000 businesses in the world. Along with the growth in terms of the number of businesses borrowing from the company, Funding Circle has seen a substantial growth in the number of investors too. #3: Upstart

The minimum amount you can borrow is $3,000 and the maximum is $35,000. The annual percentage rate or APR starts at 4.7 percent. They offer loans for just about everything.

#4: CircleBack Lending

Loans are offered by CircleBack Lending for tenures of 3 or 5 years and amounts ranging from $3,001 to $35,000. The APR ranges from 6.63 percent to 36 percent.

#5: Prosper Marketplace

The company has registered tremendous growth since its inception and currently has a client base of more than 250,000. Prosper has disbursed loans worth more than $4 billion so far.

#6: Peerform

This popular lending marketplace offers 3-year loans ranging from $1,000 to $25,000 with an APR of 7.12 percent to 29.99 percent. Peerform does not look at the FICO score alone in order to measure the risk of lending. The company’s Loan Analyzer carries out the evaluation on a case to case basis. According to Peerform, the Loan Analyzer was developed in consultation with leading economists and it follows a differentiated method for determining the creditworthiness of each borrower. As a result, even individuals whose credit scores are in the range of 600 may be able to secure loans.

#7: SoFi

SoFi’s offers loans starting from $5,000 and up to $100,000, which is higher compared to the standard amount of $35,000 offered by many other players in the peer-to-peer marketplace.

Why fintech startups love advertising on the New York City subway (Tearsheet), Rated: A

For a consumer fintech startup, it’s the perfect place to put some advertising dollars. TransferWise has built its business around the ability to let people send money overseas at a low cost. Sixty percent of its users are immigrants; 40 percent are American-born. Its employees represent more than 50 countries. Its user base and prospective customer pool looks a lot like the people of New York.

Even if they’re American-born, theres still a chance they moved to New York from someplace else. TransferWise wants to send the message that it celebrates that diversity.

The subway is a hot destination for startups in general, looking to stretch their marketing budgets. E-commerce startups like Thinx and Casper both love advertising on the subway, calling them “conversation starters” and a way to be in a city where “trends are set.” They’re also effective, say these companies: David Zhang, Casper’s CMO, told Tearsheet’s sister site, Digiday that subway ads are highly effective to target local audience because when riders get stuck on the train, they have nowhere to look except at those ads.

Three years ago Venmo ran an ad campaign around the New York subway featuring an everyday millennial called “Lucas” (who, it turns out, was a Venmo engineer). Venmo’s message to subway riders was the same (although less nostalgic and bittersweet): we do the same things you do, we understand you. The campaign sparked a lot of frustration and confusion for consumers — but the company was engaging with them.

Charlotte fintech startup targets couples who don’t merge finances (Charlotte Agenda), Rated: A

Couples today are getting married later.

And when they do get hitched, they’re much less likely to combine their finances. Only one-third of millennial couples are putting everything in a joint bank account and fully merging their money. That’s down from about half of couples overall, according to research from TD Bank.

Honeyfi, an app planning a formal beta launch later this week, is designed to allow couples to blend finances to the extent they’re willing to — and figure out how to manage things accordingly.

Both sides load in all their financial accounts but can choose what’s visible to their significant other — both at the account level and at the individual transaction level. If you want to keep your shopping spree under wraps, you can do that with Honeyfi.

Alan Gellman Joins Credible as Chief Marketing Officer (PR Web), Rated: B

In the latest move to capitalize on its expanded offerings and accelerate recent growth, personal finance marketplace Credible.com today announced that former Esurance CMO Alan Gellman is joining Credible as its first chief marketing officer.

Funding Circle: Small businesses braced for higher costs after Brexit (P2P Finance News), Rated: AAA

MORE THAN two thirds of small businesses that import goods and services expect costs to increase when Britain leaves the European Union, Funding Circle claims.

A poll of 1,325 small business borrowers by the peer-to-peer platform found 69 per cent of firms expect their average costs to increase by £5,300 per month resulting in £60,000 per year of extra spending.

Businesses were also deflated by the overall result of the general election with only 12 per cent stating that they feel positive about the outcome, while 41 per cent were concerned.

The worst inaccuracies were found to be:

  • Five of the six are presenting peer-to-peer lending as “savings” rather than “investing” a year after the Financial Conduct Authority expressed well-founded concerns about this practice.
  • The two money sites that compare P2P investments in their comparison tables include P2P lending in savings account comparison tables rather than separate investment comparison tables.
  • Risk of fraud and negligence were not mentioned by any of the money sites.
  • Just one of the six mentioned the risks to investors of concentrating their pots on just one P2P lending platform.
  • Risks identified in behavioral investing theory (such as poor investing results from those who are too greedy or fearful) were not mentioned by any of the sites.
  • None of the six explained the full costs to investors of using P2P services, typically covering just a smaller part of the costs (the lending fee), while sometimes leaving the impression that lending is completely free. (It is never free for investors due to hidden costs.)
  • No money sites made clear the vast difference in risks between the various P2P lending platforms.
  • Just one generic money site explains that bad debts might be higher in a financial downturn.
  • While all showed the risk of losses if a P2P lending platform goes out of business, five did not explain that you could experience delays in getting your money back.
  • Five out of six relied heavily on provision funds and on the level of interest rates to assess whether a P2P lending platform is safe, assuming safety is always correlated. (Interest rates are an unreliable measure of risk and provision funds are a secondary risk-control or risk-measurement devices. Much more important factors include such things as solid underwriting and credit-risk models, good security and low bad debt history.)
  • Some of the money sites did not explain that provision funds might not always be sufficient to cover losses.
  • All six fail to mention that you might not in all circumstances be able to get your money back as soon as you expect, even if there is an option to sell your loans and exit early.

US lawmakers are trying to stop the sale of the Chicago Stock Exchange to Chinese buyers (Business Insider), Rated: AAA

Eleven members of Congress asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday to stop the sale of the Chicago Stock Exchange to a group led by China-based investors, saying the regulator lacks the ability to monitor the foreign buyers.

The proposal to sell privately owned CHX for an undisclosed amount to a consortium led by Chongqing Casin Enterprise Group (CCEG) has drawn attention because it would be the first time a U.S. exchange has been bought by Chinese investors. There are also U.S. investors in the group.

Casin Group, a privately held company that invests in real estate development and financial holdings, said its long-term goal is to list Chinese companies in the United States through CHX, which has locations in Chicago and New Jersey.

PayPal hires ex-Amazon exec for lending business (MarketWatch), Rated: AAA

PayPal Holdings Inc. said Tuesday it has hired Mark Britto, a financial-technology entrepreneur and a former executive at Amazon.com Inc., to lead its lending business.

Mr. Britto, 53, joins PayPal from Boku Inc., a company he founded that lets consumers buy goods and services using their mobile phones and pay for them alongside their usual bill from their telecommunications provider. He replaces Steve Allocca, who left PayPal in May to become the president of online lender LendingClub Corp.

The company currently uses cash to fund the $5.1 billion of consumer loans and around $600 million of small business loans it has on its balance sheet.

The unit has bolstered PayPal’s bottom line in recent years: the consumer-credit portion accounts for around 13% of PayPal’s annual operating profit, or roughly $280 million, according to analysts at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

Real Estate Investing versus Stocks: Returns and How to Get the Best of Both Worlds (Equities.com), Rated: AAA

The decision to invest in real estate or stocks doesn’t necessarily have to be either-or and there’s good reason to choose both.

Stocks offer advantages as well with higher liquidity and lower transaction costs. It’s difficult to build a diversified portfolio of property types and regions without several hundred thousand dollars in real estate investments. Not so with stocks where you can invest easily across the major sectors for less than $100 in commissions.

Despite the steep drop in property prices when the bubble burst in 2008, real estate has still outperformed stocks over the last 20 years.

Real estate has benefited from historically low interest rates over the past decade, providing cheap money on highly leveraged properties. Stocks have also benefited from lower rates but not to the extent as property investors.

The downside to REIT investing is that you don’t get the control or tax benefits you get in direct property ownership. I still own several rental properties as well as equity ownership in some real estate crowdfunding deals to benefit from the tax shelter of real estate investing.

Why PayPal Could Join the Payments Buying Spree (Barrons), Rated: A

PayPal has a strong presence in the U.S. and the U.K., but it’s less well-known in the rest of the world, Ellis notes. Given the fast pace of evolution in the digital-payments industry, “the window is closing rapidly on PayPal’s ability to expand organically into new markets,” she tells Barron’s Next. Rather than build up a user base and merchant base from scratch in new areas, which could take years, PayPal might decide to buy a company that has already done the heavy lifting.

Ellis thinks a European acquisition makes the most sense. She points to a number of attractive candidates in Europe, including payment processors Adyen and Wirecard. PayPal could also buy Klarna or outbid Vantiv for Worldpay. On a practical level, PayPal’s cash is mostly sitting in Europe.

And the company has a good deal of cash: it could have about $10 billion by the end of the year once it sells off its credit receivables business, Ellis notes.

Led by Europe- and San Francisco-based venture capital fund Index Ventures, the fund-raising round was one of the biggest ever Series B rounds in Europe. It should provide some comfort to the British capitol as it jostles to hold onto its reputation as Europe’s leading hub for the nascent fintech sector.

Revolut also announced that it is adding digital currency bitcoin BTC=BTSP to its app in response to high demand from customers. Users will now be able to hold, exchange, spend and transfer bitcoin the same way they use other currencies. Rival cryptocurrencies Ether and Litecoin will soon be added.

P2P wholesale ban boosts business for wider crowdfunding sector (P2P Finance News), Rated: A

THE FINANCIAL CONDUCT AUTHORITY (FCA)’s clampdown on peer-to-peer wholesale lending activities is pushing lenders towards other types of crowdfunding platforms to obtain finance.

P2P platforms have had to stop lending to other lenders after the City watchdog confirmed its position on the practice earlier this year, warning that it could be in breach of the rules.

“The recent changes in the P2P sector effectively pushed that type of company to the crowdfunding space,” said Andrew Adcock, chief marketing officer at Crowd for Angels.

The bond- and equity-based lending platform has recently launched a fundraising for The Asset Exchange, an asset-backed lender operating in the car finance market.

Richard Levy, a director of the £351m VPC Speciality Lending Investment Trust, has increased his holding in the fund.

Darktrace valued at $ 825m as fintech firm Revolut secures new funding (The Telegraph), Rated: A

Darktrace, a cyber security firm backed by Mike Lynch, the Autonomy founder, has received $75m (£58m) in a funding round that values the company at $825m.

Darktrace, created by mathematicians from the University of Cambridge, claims to use artificial intelligence software that mimics the characteristics of the human immune system to detect and counter cyber threats.

Darktrace’s funding round, which brings it close to the $1bn “unicorn” valuation that represents success to many start-ups, was led by Insight Venture Partners, a New York group that has previously backed Twitter and Alibaba. Its biggest shareholder remains Invoke Capital, which was set up by Mr Lynch after Autonomy was sold to HP for $11.7bn in 2011.

Lawsuit Against P2P Lender Yirendai Dismissed (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: AAA

Yirendai (NYSE:YRD), a China based peer to peer lender that is a sister company of CreditEase, has shared that a lawsuit filed against it in 2016 has been completely dismissed. The putative class action lawsuit was brought by multiple law firms pertaining to the decline in the share price. Ostensibly, the legal action was taken in part due to actions by the Chinese government and not Yirendai as the government was in the midst of issuing new rules to regulate the exceptionally large P2P lending industry. Yirendai has facilitated approximately RMB 32.3 billion (USD $ 4.75 billion) in loans from March 2012 through December 31, 2016.

Shares in Yirendai have moved higher on the news. The American Depository Shares (ADS) were priced at $10 per share when they went public in 2015. Today they stand at over $27/share.

A Chinese firm may acquire a 90% stake in Luxembourg’s Banque international à Luxembourg, a news agency has reported.

Legend Holdings is in talks with Precision Capital, the Luxembourg-based Qatari investment vehicle that owns the Bil shares, Reuters reported on 11 July.

The deal is valued between €1bn-€1.5bn, according to Reuters.

On one end of the risk spectrum are the risk-taking fintech startups. These fast technology adopters are disrupting traditional financial services and their delivery. Circumventing regulation is part of their cost advantage, but also their weakness. But the default has raised concerns as China’s consumer e-finance leader integrates its P2P lending, insurance and investments starting at 1 renminbi with global wire transfer stalwart MoneyGram and its 350,000 agencies worldwide.

Even with digital credit information easily accessible, the increase in competition in fintech – China alone has 5,000 peer-2-peer (P2P) lenders — is pushing financial services firms to relax credit rules to compete for customers. Industry leader the Funding Circle has maintained a default rate under 2% on £2.3 billion in loans originated since 2010, averaging 5% returns, but for the broader P2P loan market, default rates are rising .

As a business model, P2P lending is still at a nascent stage in India. According to Tracxn, there are 63 pure-play companies in this domain such as Faircent, Lendbox, Capital Float, Indifi Technologies and i-Lend.

P2P is a simple concept, but its very nature mandates a robust system for assessing the creditworthiness of borrowers. To make that cut, i2i gathers as much information as possible about people looking for loans (yes, it looks at their social media profiles as well), collects all relevant documents and verifies them. Each profile is then automatically analysed and put under one of the three tabs – Accepted, Rejected and On border. Next, its underwriters manually go through the borderline cases and ask for more information to give them a specific status. They also list the strengths and concerns regarding each ‘Accepted’ borrower, taking into account factors such as incomes, liabilities and CIBIL scores. The company receives an average of 4,000 loan applications every month, out of which only 50-60 per cent people complete the entire application process and out of that, only 60-70 applications get accepted, says Singh.

The start-up has also initiated a ‘One loan, One Interest’ policy for every risk category.

The company currently makes money from the fees paid by its registered users. While investors pay a one-time registration fee of `500, potential borrowers just need to pay `100. Additionally, an investor has to pay a service fee, which is 1 per cent of the total amount invested on the platform. Again, based on the risk profile, a borrower has to make an upfront payment of 3-6 per cent of the loan.

And for KiWi Credit Fund — which has nothing to do with fruits or birds — the concept makes enough sense that a well known asset manager has anted up $30 million to become the lead investor.

But to our knowledge we are the first Canadian-managed fund to invest in this space,” said Colin Kilgour, a founder at Kilgour Williams, a firm best known for managing the program put in place after the $30 billion asset-backed commercial paper froze a few years back.
