The Nielsen surveys revealed that around 50% of Australia’s consumers noted that they had not heard of a neobank. Only a third, or about 33%, of the nation’s consumers said they’d be willing to use a neobank as one of their financial services providers, even after the benefits of using digital-only banks were explained to them.

A quarter, or 25%, of consumers who became aware of neobanks stated they would most likely use them as one of their primary financial services providers.

Other key areas the report looks at in-depth include:

A few months later, in July, Fannie Mae (FNMA, senior Aaa stable) announced a pilot program for enterprise paid mortgage insurance (EPMI). Both programs effectively serve as substitutes for single premium MI policies and highlight the evolution of the mortgage risk transfer market.

Top tech investors stand to lose millions if Wonga collapses (The Times) Rated: AAA

Some of the technology industry’s most respected investors face losing tens of millions of pounds as Wonga stands on the edge of failure.

Early investors including Accel, Balderton Capital and Greylock Partners are among the backers of the sub-prime lender that face losing their entire investment as it teeters close to collapse amid a rise in compensation claims.

Wonga’s backers had put about £90 million into the payday lender, including £10 million in the past month. Research from StepChange Debt Charity found that an estimated 1.1million people used high cost credit for everyday household costs in 2016. A recent update of this research found that this had increased in 2017 to an estimated 1.4million people. It’s becoming a bigger and bigger problem.

This has led to a situation where one in four working adults in the UK are now unable to afford an unexpected £500 bill and a growing number of low income households are becoming reliant on credit to cover basic needs.

UK data breach complaints soar under new EU rules (Financial Times) Rated: AAA

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said they received more than 6,200 complaints in the first 6 months of GDPR; the majority of complaints were from customers saying their data was shared without permission and companies self reporting cases where data was accessed.

10 percent of complaints come from the financial services market, other sectors include education, healthcare and local governments.

The ICO is looking to increase funding by almost 50 percent and hire more than 200 more workers to handle the amount of complaints.

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has reportedly enlisted the help of challenger bank Starling in its efforts to develop a digital bank of its own.

The news, reported by The Times newspaper, came as a result of a letter to shareholders from Starling’s chief executive Anne Boden which stated that it has signed a contract “to provide payment services to support new initiatives at RBS/NatWest”.

Irish peer-to-peer lender Flender has reportedly raised €10 million through its latest funding round to lend to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Flender, which was launched in early 2017,  is authorized and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under Registration Number 657861. The online lender is now on a mission to enable businesses and consumers the ability to borrow money through their existing networks of friends, family, and customers. 

Flender also reported that it intends to offer established small businesses an innovative new way to access finance by leveraging their loyal customer base. The lender will facilitate and formalize an existing and large market of social lending across the UK and Ireland.

Aussie super asset allocation “riskier”: Research (Financial Standard) Rated: AAA

UBS Asset Management’s latest pension fund indicator report highlights the propensity of Australian superannuation funds to invest a substantial portion of retirement savings in “risker” assets such as equities.

According to the report, the asset allocation of Australian superannuation funds is heavily geared towards equities, with 45% of assets allocated to equities. The asset manager said Australia’s equity allocation is almost double its bond allocation, which attracts 26% of assets.

  1. Business Development Companies. The BDCs operate under specific regulations mandating their “significant managerial assistance” to their debtor companies. The majority of BDCs are treated as RICs for tax purposes, which involves additional regulatory oversight.
  2. Senior Loan Funds. These are closed-end vehicles that make first or second lien loans to small- and mid-sized companies. They use floating rate spreads composed of a risk premium and the benchmark rate, and typically target gross returns in the neighborhood of 10%.
  3. Mezzanine Funds. These are also closed-end vehicles. They typically target return in the mid- to upper teens, given their position subordinate to the senior liens.
  4. Distressed Debt Funds. These can be either closed- or open-end vehicles. They invest in the debt securities of mid- to large-sized companies that are experiencing financial distress, seeking deeply discounted purchases. There are a variety of strategies involved under this broad heading, including loan-to-own or turnaround lending.
  5. Special Situation Funds. These are typically closed-end vehicles. They, too, target mid- to large-sized companies in tight circumstances. They have a much broader mandate than the distressed debt funds, investing across the capital structure.

2 New Robo-Advisors Among the Top Performers in Q1 (ThinkAdvisor) Rated: AAA

Two relative newcomers to the robo-advisor space are among the industry’s top three performers in the first quarter, according to the latest Robo Report from BackEnd Benchmarking.

SoFi Wealth Management, which launched in May 2017 as an offshoot from the SoFi online lending platform, took first place; TIAA SRI, the socially responsible investment portfolio of its TIAA Personal Portfolio robo, placed third; and sandwiched between the two was Schwab Intelligent Portfolios.

All three robos lost money in the first quarter in their taxable, balanced portfolios, split roughly 60/40 between stocks and bonds, but they performed better than other digital advisors and the overall stock market, which was down 0.76%, for the S&P 500. Their losses ranged from 0.14% for SoFi and 0.45% for TIAA SRI.

Schwab Intelligent Portfolios excelled largely because of its fixed income allocation, which included high-yield bonds and international debt, according to the Robo Report. It placed first for fixed income performance not only for the first quarter of 2018 but for the one-year and two-year trailing periods.

Navient reports higher earnings in first quarter (Delaware Business Now) Rated: A

Wilmington-based Navient reported higher earnings in the first quarter as the company expanded its segment reporting to reflect a broader array of businesses.

Results that included the origination of $500 million of private education refinance loans, a 43 percent decrease in private education loan charge-offs and a 32 percent increase in business processing fee revenue from the year-ago quarter.

Transferwise is today rolling out a “borderless” consumer account and linked debit card, which will let people hold money in multiple currencies.

The service, which Transferwise says is the first one of its kind, has been openly trialed among a few thousand customers since January, and goes live globally including in Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Norway will follow later on.

This means that people will be able to transfer and spend money abroad, with little or no exchange or mark-up fees. They will also be able to make withdrawals through a Mastercard debit card. The debit card will me made available for larger businesses later in 2018.

According to an insider at the Royal Bank of Scotland, the bank has set an internal target of switching more than 1m users from Natwest to its latest project, a “next generation mobile-only bank”, in time for its debut in the third quarter of 2018.

The Spanish banking giant’s U.K. arm recently launched One Pay FX, a mobile payments service for its U.K. debit card holders that want to send payments to people in Euro Zone countries and the U.S. It’s the first market-ready product built on blockchain technology, Ripple’s xCurrent protocol, for retail customers. It had been running as a pilot for employees for the last 18 months.

Santander, one of the founding members of R3 CEV, a prominent consortium of banks investing in the company’s blockchain technology for financial applications, soon became one of the first members to exit the group as it concentrated on other payments-focused group work like the Utility Settlement Coin — “a tokenized version of central bank money,” in Faura’s words — and the Global Payments Steering Group.

SoFi prices 1st student loan ABS with medical residency refis (American Banker), Rated: AAA

Social Finance’s second private student loan securitization of the year, which priced Friday, is also its first to include loans refinancing the debt of medical residents.

Loans refinancing the debt of medical residents and fellows account for approximately 5% of the collateral for the original collateral for the transaction, SoFi Professional Loan Program 2018-B Trust, according to rating agency presale reports. The collateral for the deal was upsized, to $900 million from $700 million originally, in response to strong demand, though investors demanded slightly higher spreads on the senior notes compared to SoFi’s previous student loan securitization, completed in January.

Experian Releases a New Credit Score Aimed at Non-Prime Borrowers (Lend Academy), Rated: AAA

The ranks of thin file consumers continues to grow in this country. According to Experian these consumers now number 25% of the total U.S. population. These are people with five or fewer items in their traditional credit history.

Since the acquisition they have worked with the Clarity Services team to build a new score specifically for the non-prime segment. They are calling it the Clear Early Risk Score. As the name implies this new score is designed to give lenders a clearer view of the risk of these thin file consumers, many of whom should not be categorized as subprime.

When I asked Alex how this new score will be used in conjunction with their traditional FICO score he said it will be used in two ways:
1. When the consumer has no traditional file and therefore no credit score it will be used as an independent score.
2. The consumer may be originally scored as subprime and this new score could provide new  information that may lead to a different conclusion regarding risk.

 

 

 

Here’s what the latest Senate bill means for US fintech (Business Insider), Rated: AAA

A bill that the Senate Banking Committee has been drafting for several years, designed to reduce the regulatory burden for small- and mid-sized US lenders, received bipartisan approval in the Senate on Wednesday with a 61-38 vote.

The bill’s proposals include raising the threshold for the Dodd-Frank definition of a “systemically important” lender from $50 billion in assets to $250 billion, thus absolving smaller banks from strictures like annual stress tests; absolving banks with under $10 billion in assets from the Volcker Rule; and allowing small banks and credit unions to report less of their mortgage loan data, among other things.

U.S. Online Merchants Believe Instant Financing Will Drive Increased Sales (PR Newswire), Rated: A

Online merchants in the U.S. are increasingly recognizing the importance of offering instant financing to shoppers, according to a new online e-commerce survey. Nearly two-thirds of retailers polled (64 percent) believe providing online financing options through their store is important to driving new and increased sales. Forty-six percent indicate it would decrease cart abandonment – still one of the most critical challenges for online retailers today.

The merchant survey, which recognizes the importance of instant financing among online retailers, corresponds with consumer attitudes as revealed in a Klarna-sponsored survey last year that showed:

  • Three quarters of consumers (75 percent) indicate preference for online merchants offering instant financing
  • 39 percent said they would spend more money if given instant credit options when purchasing goods and services online
  • 28 percent would be very likely or completely likely to change merchants in order to use instant financing
  • Nearly half of respondents (47 percent) would like to be presented with an instant financing option while shopping online

Everlasting Capital Grows from a Basement to Inc.’s 500 List (deBanked), Rated: A

“I was making $267 a week at the pawn shop and I was having to ask friends to help me pay my rent for a room,” Feinberg said. “So at that point, I realized that something needed to change.”

OCC once wanted payday lenders to ‘stay the hell away’ from banks. No longer (American Banker), Rated: A

More than a decade has passed since federal regulators cracked down on partnerships between payday lenders and banks that had been designed to circumvent state interest rate caps.

Now the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, operating under newly installed leadership, has taken a notable step in the opposite direction.

The agency said Friday that it has terminated a 2002 consent order with Ace Cash Express.

South Dakota is an example of a state that could be impacted. Sixteen months ago, the state’s voters approved a 36% interest rate cap. Critics of payday lending worry that federal banking regulators may effectively overturn such laws, and that last week’s decision by the OCC is a step down that path.

Goldman Sachs Adds LPL Financial to Its Securities-Lending Business (US News), Rated: A

Goldman Sachs Group Inc has signed LPL Financial Holdings, the largest U.S. independent broker-dealer by revenue, to its securities-based lending platform, the bank said on Tuesday.

Called GS Select, the platform was launched last year as a way for the Wall Street bank to target borrowers who have less than $10 million in investable assets. GS Select issues loans worth $75,000 to $25 million that are collateralized by the borrowers’ investment portfolios.

Goldman’s typical wealth clients have at least $50 million in assets.

Robo-advice firms offering automated financial advice have begun incorporating human advisers into their service, raising questions about how this will impact their business models.

Schroders-backed Nutmeg is currently looking at introducing human advisers into its service, while rival Scalable Capital, in which Blackrock has a large minority stake, has recently done just that.

Cerberus completes Cyanco acquisition (PE Hub Network), Rated: B

Cerberus Capital Management, L.P. today announced the completion of the previously announced acquisition of Cyanco Holding Corp. by a Cerberus affiliate from funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management, L.P. The transaction closed on March 16, 2018.

Cyanco will continue to be led by its current management team. As part of its investment, Cerberus will be putting in place a new board of directors for Cyanco. The new board will be chaired by Daniel Ajamian, an executive who has been Chairman of several other Cerberus portfolio companies.

RateSetter CEO warns of ‘risk’ of collaboration over competition (Peer2Peer Finance), Rated: AAA

At the Innovate Finance Global Summit at London’s Guildhall, Lewis warned that if the two cohorts solely collaborate, there would be little visible change from the viewpoint of the consumer.

“The technological advances being made are unstoppable; the question is who is going to take them to market,” he said on Monday.

There have been an increasing number of partnerships between fintech firms and the very incumbents that they are trying to disrupt. US investment bank Goldman Sachs has acquired a number of innovative start-ups through its online lending platform Marcus.

report released last month from consulting firm Capgemini and corporate networking website LinkedIn found that more than 75 per cent of fintech firms cite collaborating with incumbent firms as their primary business objective.

 

The state-backed Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is working on secret plans to create a standalone digital bank to compete with emerging British fintech champions including Monzo and Revolut.

Sky News has learnt that RBS has assigned one of its top executives to the project, which is so confidential that few people inside the company are aware of its existence.

RBS has already struck agreements with a number of leading fintech companies such as Funding Circle, with which it works to direct customers to peer-to-peer and other providers of alternative finance.

 

LendInvest launches second retail bond offer (Bridging & Commercial), Rated: A

The online platform for property finance has issued a five-and-a-half year 5.375% fixed rate retail bond due October 2023.

Payments under the bond will be guaranteed by LendInvest and the bond will be secured by way of a floating charge over the whole of the undertaking and all property, assets and rights, both present and future, of the issuer.

LendInvest’s first retail bond – which trades on the London Stock Exchange – raised £50m from a broad base of retail and institutional investors.

As of 31st December 2017, the bond was 99.6% utilised, with an interest coverage ratio of 192% and a weighted average LTV ratio of 57%.

My suggestion was Funding Circle, which enables businesses to access finance independent of their banks and allows them to receive funds within a couple of weeks, compared to up to three months with a traditional bank loan.

It’s been a tried and tested investment since August 2010 and there are currently 18 councils investing through the Funding Circle platform, and the amounts invested vary from £1,000 to £2 million.

The Funding Circle minimum a council could lend to a business is £20, so Funding Circle suggests lending £2,000 would allow a council to lend to at least 100 businesses, lend no more than 1 per cent of the portfolio to each business.

What recent IPOs reveal about the state of fintech (AltFiNews), Rated: A

Over the last week or so we’ve seen not one but two fintech focused venture capital style listed funds list on the London market: Augmentum Fintech raised £94m while TruFin hit the market with a £70m valuation. Both of these funds have their own unique characteristics although perhaps the most interesting information from the listings is what they reveal about the likely worth of the alternative finance space in the UK.

The fund’s 15 per cent stake in Zopa, by contrast, seems a little more tangential though it’s also the single most valuable asset in the fund.

Lendix is one of the leading European players in the crowdlending sector for SMEs and although it is not yet active in the UK or outside of Europe, it sure is expanding fast.

So what are investors’ preferences?

– The French investor prefers grade A projects with a duration of 37 to 48 months.
– Spaniards are the most risk-averse and tend to invest more in projects with A and A + grades, but are not opposed to longer durations.
– Italian investors are the most risk-prone: they prefer B rated projects but with shorter durations (0-24 months).

This data shows that the Lendix community invests 11% more on A, A + and B + projects than on B or C ratings. Moreover, the duration seems to have a relative impact in terms of amounts invested, even if investors are more attentive to this parameter in the case of small projects (amounts up to 100,000 euros). In general, the community invests 32% more in long-term projects.

These 2 brothers just declared a mortgage price war – and Sweden is going nuts (Business Insider), Rated: A

Sweden’s mortgage industry is today worth around 3 trillion krona ($370 bn), according to Statistics Sweden, and most of the interest on these loans end up in the pockets of big banks.

A new fintech venture called enkla.com has today launched a potentially game-changing service. The Swedish online lender offers consumers a 0.95% fixed mortgage rate for three years, which is considerably less than the 1,6% average for similar loans among Sweden’s major banks, according to Di Digital.

Enkla’s self-stated goal is to borrow 100 billion SEK ($12,2 billion) worth of mortgages in the next 18 months by issuing mortgage bonds on the international markets, Di Digital writes. If the target is met, Enkla.com would be looking at a 3 percent share of the Swedish mortgage market.

The service enters a market where Sweden’s household debt has exploded from 66 percent to 87 percent of GDP in the past decade, driven by soaring housing prices. Consumers are evidently hungry for a cheaper deal than what banks can offer. Currently, Sweden’s four biggest banks – Swedbank, Nordea, Handelsbanken and SEB – have 75 percent of the country’s mortgage market, Breakit reports.

Enkla.com takes a 0,35% cut on the mortgages.

Beyond data sharing, open banking boosts omnichannel payments (PaymentsSource), Rated: A

A bitcoin trading firm just opened up a lending business — and it’s going gangbusters (Business Insider), Rated: A

Bitcoin might be in a bit of a slump, but one brand new bitcoin business is going gangbusters.

Genesis Capital, the recently launched subsidiary of market making firm Genesis Trading, has close to $100 million in loans outstanding, a person familiar with the company’s operations told Business Insider. That’s a striking milestone, considering the business was launched two weeks ago.

It gives out loans worth $100,000 or more in cryptocurrencies including bitcoin, ether, and bitcoin cash. BlockTower Capital, a cryptocurrency hedge fund, and DV Chain, a crypto trading firm, are some of Genesis’ clients, according to people familiar with the matter.

Autonomous NEXT estimates the number of crypto funds has increased to 226. That’s up from approximately 50 at the end of August 2017. In total, they manage approximately $3.5 to $5 billion, a tiny fraction of the $3.2 trillion managed by traditional hedge funds.

“Fintech” covers many things, but is often used to refer to nonbank firms that leverage cutting-edge technology to deliver financial services directly to consumers and businesses. In that sense, banks initially viewed fintechs as competition, as they compete for lending, personal finance, payments, and other consumer services.

1. What’s the problem to be solved?

Sounds like common sense, but a fintech partnership should necessitate an extensive evaluation of the underlying need, such as filling in product or service gaps, or, in this bank example, offering borrowers a digital channel for applying and getting to closing quicker on a commercial loan as their primary competitors offered. Clear objectives help the bank and fintech determine if the match is on solid ground from the start.

A fintech partnership should offer the bank an upside—quantitative and qualitative—that simply isn’t available at more favorable cost, risk, and performance measures under the build or buy options.

2. What’s the difference between buying vs. partnering with a fintech?

Is it a shared risk and shared reward? Does the reward justify the risk? Or is it just the innovation culture of the third party? The definition is critical as the process of evaluating a fintech’s performance, costs, and risks entails unique considerations from a typical vendor evaluation.

Many partnerships are really just vendor relationships. That’s okay. In many cases, banks with extremely low risk appetites prefer the typically lower risk of a vendor relationship. One fintech exec noted how impossible it is to run many banks’ risk gauntlets because they don’t understand what they are getting into.

After picking up $250 million in equity funding from Softbank earlier this year, the small business loans and finance company Kabbage — which uses only algorithms and machine learning (no humans) to determine an applicant’s eligibility — is announcing another big infusion of money. The company is picking up $200 million from Credit Suisse in a revolving credit facility that it will use for loans.

Study suggests many borrowers bungle credit card debt consolidation (Credible), Rated: AAA

Thanks in part to the rise of fintech companies that make loans online, more than 16 million Americans now have personal loans — an increase of 64 percent in the last five years.

Payoff — a personal lender that specializes in helping consumers tackle credit card debt — says its internal data shows borrowers who paid off at least $5,000 in credit card balances between August 2016 and January 2017 saw a 40-point increase in their FICO score within four months.

Cleveland Fed study: a cautionary tale

One year after taking out a P2P loan, borrowers had credit scores that were 16 points lower than those of the non-P2P borrowers they were matched to, on average — an impact that persisted for four years, the authors said in their working paper.

The study found no evidence that P2P lenders are providing access to credit for “underbanked” consumers — borrowers taking out P2P loans were obtain other credit from traditional banks at rates similar to other consumers.

But a number of companies on the list, including Lightstream, BestEgg, LendingPoint, Earnest, and RocketLoans weren’t around in 2012, when the most recent loans studied by the Cleveland Fed researchers were made. Several others — including Avant, CommonBond, Pave, and Upstart — were just getting off the ground at the time.

The growth in fintech lending has been a driver in overall personal loan growth, with 16.1 million consumers owing $106 billion in personal loan debt as of June 30, 2017. That’s up from the 9.8 million borrowers who owed $45 billion in personal loan debt in mid-2012.

Fed flags online lending as subprime redux, but market hits back (Global Capital), Rated: A

ABS participants, speaking with GlobalCapital this week, hit back at the report, written by Yuliya Demyanyk, senior research economist, Daniel Kolliner, research analyst, both of the Cleveland Fed; and Elena Loutskina a professor of business administration at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, and contributing author at the Cleveland Fed.

The authors challenge the belief that peer-to-peer (P2P) loans have expanded credit to borrowers with limited access to debt since the financial crisis.

A central argument of the Fed’s report was that sector has not done much to expand access to debt for borrowers with low credit scores.

In securitization, subprime consumer ABS has thinned since the crisis. For the five major credit card issuers, the years 2008-2016 saw revolving credit available to US borrowers with a Fico score of less than 660 reduced by approximately $142bn, according to data published by online lender Elevate earlier this year.

Even portfolios backing recent marketplace loan ABS have a weighted average Fico score above 680, the level that defines so-called ‘near prime’ credits, despite the notable dip in collateral quality. Marlette, for example, had an average score of 705 for its most recent transaction which was priced in October, while Prosper had a weighted average Fico score of 709, according to data from Kroll Bond Rating Agency.

  • Credit re-normalization trend continues remains a recurring theme across all major lending groups. Overall, loss-rates on recent vintages are increasing versus prior recent vintages, although performance remains stronger than pre-crisis levels.  Card issuers are increasing loan loss reserves at a higher rate than loan growth, indicating expectations of higher losses going forward. Discover and American Express increased loan loss provisions ~50% although loan growth is at 9% and 14% respectively.
  • Consumer installment lenders do not anticipate an increase in loss rates, after having recalibrated loss expectations and increased reserves in 2016. OneMain had the smallest increase in loss reserves at 4%.
  • Consumers now have access to greater supply of credit and credit demand continues to grow. Consumer average debt-to-incomes are below pre-crisis levels.

LendingTree Holiday Shopping Survey Suggests Bigger Budgets, Selfless Spending and Mobile Shopping Among Parents this Holiday Season (Business Insider), Rated: AAA

LendingTree, the nation’s leading online loan marketplace, recently conducted its Holiday Shopping Survey among 1,050 Americans aged 25 to 55 with at least one child. The results show that people generally expect to give more than they expect to receive, and although only 55 percent of respondents have a set budget this holiday season, 76 percent plan to spend the same amount or more on holiday shopping compared to last year.

According to the survey, the average holiday shopping budget across all age groups was $943, although 45 percent of respondents say they don’t have a set budget for holiday shopping this year. LendingTree’s 2016 holiday survey found that 56 percent of respondents planned to shop for the holidays without a pre-set budget.

Additionally, 29 percent say they plan to spend more on holiday shopping in 2017 than they did in the 2016 holiday season.

Parents are setting a low bar for their children’s gift giving abilities in 2017, with 68 percent of parents expecting to receive no gifts from or on behalf of their kids.

Most parents (80 percent) plan to spend at least $100 per child this year while 37 percent of parents plan to spend at least $250 per child.  Although 62 percent of parents say they try to spend the same amount on each child, younger children have a slight advantage with 12 percent of parents admitting to spending more on younger children and only 6 percent of parents use a child’s behavior to dictate how much money is spent on their gifts.

A debit card is the primary form of payment for holiday shopping for 46 percent of respondents, as well as the primary form of payment for across all groups. Second to debit cards, 29 percent designated cash as their primary form of payment, and only 21 percent are primarily credit card users – although credit cards are considered more secure than cash or debit cards. A recent CompareCards by LendingTree survey found that 66 percent of Americans think debit cards are as safe or safer than credit cards for payments, when in fact debit cards don’t offer the same consumer protections as credit cards.

Respondents expect to do 50 percent of their shopping online and 34 percent of their shopping on their mobile phone. Millennials (age 35 and under) expect to do 40 percent of their shopping on their phone, the largest of any other age group.

CFPB Guns for Think Finance. Files Suit Alleging Consumer Deception in Repaying Loans Not Legally Owned (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: AAA

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has filed suit in federal court against Think Finance, a Fintech that leverages its technology to power online lending platforms. The CFPB says the suit was filed for its “role in deceiving consumers into repaying loans that were not legally owed.”

The CFPB alleges that Think Finance illegally collects on loans that are void under state laws governing interest rate caps or the licensing of lenders.

The actual filing states:

“From 2011 through at least 2015, Defendant has performed critical functions for three separate lending businesses owned by Native American Tribes: (1) Great Plains Lending, LLC (Great Plains); (2) MobiLoans, LLC (MobiLoans); and (3) Plain Green, LLC (Plain Green) (collectively, the Tribal lenders). Defendant is therefore a “service provider” under CFPA. 12 U.S.C. § 5481(226).”

Richard Cordray’s CFPB Has Done Its Job Well (Bloomberg), Rated: A

As recently as a decade ago, the U.S. had no single regulator tasked with looking out for the interests of consumers in financial markets. Fragmented oversight allowed all kinds of bad behavior to fall through the cracks. Mortgage brokers hid the true terms of loans in piles of nearly indecipherable documents. Banks changed the order of transactions to extract the maximum overdraft fees from poor customers. Payday lenders offered products designed to trap people in an unending cycle of debt.

Cordray has accomplished a lot. The CFPB designed new, simpler mortgage-loan disclosures. It shed light on banks’ overdraftpractices. It created the first federal rules to make payday lending less predatory. It gave the public reams of valuable information, such as a database that allows consumers to compare credit-card agreements. Its practice of publishing complaints pushed financial institutions to be more responsive. Its investigation of Wells Fargo brought national attention to the fake-accounts issue.

Some of its practices (in particular, preferringdiscretionary enforcement over explicit rule-making) are less than ideal and ought to be revisited; in other areas (such as auto lendingand credit reporting) its authority should be expanded.

Typically, hedge fund fees are 2 percent plus an incentive, or “carry,” of 20 percent of the profits. The result is billions of dollars for the managers and far less for clients.

In 2015, Buffett lagged his hedge fund rival for the first time since 2008, gaining 1.4 percent versus Protégé’s 1.7 percent. However, 2016 saw Buffett gain 11.9 percent to Protégé’s 0.9 percent. Royal Bank of Scotland is launching robo-advice for more than 5m customers as banks return to the investment market after a string of fines and as regulators attempt to plug the UK’s wide “advice gap”.

The state-backed lender is claiming to be the first in the UK to launch automated online investment advice when it opens on Monday under its NatWest brand. The service is designed for the majority of customers and for people with as little as £500 to invest as a lump sum.

The process, which costs £10 plus fees for the investment, is aimed at customers who lack the confidence to invest alone but do not wish to pay higher charges for full-blown financial advice, such as tax and inheritance planning.

UK FinTech Beats Brexit Blues with New Funding Record (Digit), Rated: A

The UK fintech sector has enjoyed a record year of investment in 2017 with more than £2 billion invested across 182 deals, according to research body FinTech.Global.

Additionally, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.7% experienced by firms valued below £75 million between 2014 and 2016 was supplemented with a further investment of £1.2 billion for this bracket in 2017. As for companies valued above the £75 million figure, a further £877.1 million has been committed across eight deals.

Investment in the UK’s top-10 fintech firms accounted for nearly 46.7% of the total investment between Q1 and Q3 2017. The largest of these deals went to Gryphon Insurance in June, valued at £179.6 million. Of the top 10 deals, four went to lending firms – Prodigy Finance1stStop GroupNeyber and Funding Circle, valued at £457.5 million. Of the remaining six deals, two went to challenger banks Tandem and Atom, two went to enterprise software companies Options Technology and Darktrace, and the final two went to insurtech companyies Gryphon Insurance and Revolut.

Millennials say advisers are inaccessible and too expensive (Financial Times), Rated: A

Millennials view financial advice as an industry of “exclusivity, inaccessibility and high cost,” according to research carried out by the financial advice trade body.

The poll of 178 millennials found 78 per cent of them believed they could only receive advice if they had investible wealth in excess of £50,000 but a significant number wanted advice when they had £10,000 or less.

ICICI Bank and Paytm partner for short term credit for users (Medianama), Rated: AAA

ICICI Bank and Paytm have partnered to offer short-term credit to users. The credit given to customers will be interest-free for 45 days and the bank says that it will give loans up to Rs 20,000. Initially, this will be allowed for select ICICI Bank customers who are on Paytm and will be extended to other bank customers as well who use Paytm.

Once the credit limit is set up for a customer, a consolidated bill is generated on the first day of the next month, which has to be paid by the 15th day of the same month. Customers can use their Paytm Wallet, debit card or internet banking of any bank for an easy repayment of their dues.

In August, the bank launched product called Instant Credit Card where certain pre-approved customers of the bank will be able to get a virtual credit card much before the physical card is delivered to them. A physical card will be sent to the customer’s address in 5-7 days.

Meanwhile, the bank’s rival, HDFC Bank said that it would start offering a virtual credit card for customers through its PayZapp wallet, as indicated by this Financial Express report. HDFC Bank has the maximum number of credit cards in circulation with 9.03 million. Meanwhile, ICICI Bank has 4.34 million credit cards.

  • Paytm’s rival in the wallet space, MobiKwik has partnered with Bajaj Finance to to bring in credit facilities to a wallet business.
  • In April this year, PayU India will be investing $50 million in its product LazyPay over the next few years. The credit facility could extend for amounts from Rs 3,000 and even up to Rs 10,000, depending upon customer behaviour.
  • For the recently concluded festival season, e-commerce player Flipkart started to offer EMIs on debit cards on high-value purchases.

Narrow banking is an idea whose time has come (livemint), Rated: A

The most heartening takeaway from last week’s public sector bank executive jamboree was the discussion around differentiated lending structures. The ThinkShop (earlier editions were called Gyan Sangams) suggested that large banks focus on corporate lending, while smaller lenders focus on retail loans or specific geographies.

Taking differentiated lending to its logical end, the time has come to consider converting the worst performers among state-owned lenders to narrow banks, which won’t lend at all.

Narrow banks are safe banks. By not lending, and using their deposits to buy government bonds, they carry virtually no credit risk. There is no danger of non-performing loans and frequent injections of equity capital that has to be funded by taxpayers. For the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) too, supervision gets easier. There is no need for deposit insurance.

CFPB fines Experian $ 3 million for lying about consumers’ credit scores (Housingwire), Rated: AAA

Experian, one of the nation’s three major credit reporting bureaus, misled consumers by telling them that the credit scores they purchased from the company were the same ones that lenders used to make credit decisions, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said Thursday.

And for that deception, the CFPB is fining Experian $3 million.

According to the CFPB, Experian developed its own proprietary credit scoring model, which it calls the “PLUS Score.” Experian then took that “PLUS Score” and applied it to information in consumer credit files to generate a credit score it offered directly to consumers.

Experian then marketed and sold the PLUS Score to consumers.

According to the CFPB, Experian violated Dodd-Frank from at least 2012 through 2014 by “falsely representing that the credit scores it marketed and provided to consumers were the same scores lenders use to make credit decisions.”

Additionally, the CFPB said that Experian also violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which requires a credit reporting company to provide a free credit report to consumers once every twelve months.

Until March 2014, consumers getting their annual report through Experian had to view Experian advertisements before they got to the report. This violates the Fair Credit Reporting Act prohibition of such advertising tactics, the CFPB said.

Marlette Funding Closes $ 333 Million Securitization Transaction (Yahoo! Finance), Rated: AAA

Marlette Funding, LLC, a provider of online consumer lending platforms and services, announced today it closed its second proprietary “MFT” securitization. Approximately $333 million of Best Egg collateral was financed via three classes of Notes and one class of Certificates with certain loan sellers retaining risk on a portion of the Notes and/or Certificates.

The transaction was significantly oversubscribed and successfully priced which was based upon Marlette’s differentiated product offering and superior credit trends. Underwriting the transaction were Goldman Sachs, who served as the structuring agent, Deutsche Bank and Citi. The Class A, B and C fixed-rate Notes were rated A (sf), BBB (sf) and BB (sf), respectively, by Kroll Bond Rating Agency (KBRA).

The “MFT” securitization is yet another significant milestone for the company, and a cornerstone of its long-term capital strategy. The transaction involved the sale of loans by Marlette and four other whole loan buyers who accessed the securitization markets via Marlette’s effective creation and management of the MFT shelf. The transaction was also notable for complying with the Dodd-Frank Act’s risk-retention requirement by utilizing a jointly sponsored entity comprised of Marlette and the originating bank, Cross River Bank.

Marlette Funding Trust 2017-1 (MFT 2017-1), (PeerIQ), Rated: AAA

Financing headlines dominated the news cycle this past week. OnDeck, an SME lender, amended its asset-backed revolving credit facility with Deutsche Bank to extend the facility’s maturity date to March 2019 and increase the borrowing capacity to $214 Mn. Further, Fundation, a leading credit solutions provider for small business, secured an asset backed credit facility from MidCap Financial.

Marlette has a strong capital market team led by ex-DB banker Karan Mehta and uses securitization as a funding channel. Citi Held for Asset Issuance 2016-MF1 (CHAI 2016-MF1), closed on March 4, 2016, was the first deal from the Marlette Platform which executed in challenging market conditions; Marlette Funding Trust 2016-1 (MFT 2016-1), closed on August 2, 2016, and was the second deal and first under the MFT shelf. MFT 2017-1, backed by $333 Mn of consumer loans, represents its third and the largest ABS transaction (Exhibit 1), led by Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and Citigroup. Due to high demand, MFT 2017-1 was upsized by 18%, from $257 Mn to $304 Mn before pricing last Friday.

In a sign that regulatory uncertainty continues, the Marlette transaction did not include any loans from Colorado. Most recently, in February, Colorado state regulators filed a complaint against Marlette and demanded various remedial actions including refunding any excess charges to Colorado residents. Originators relying on the partner-funding bank model to impacted markets (such as NY, CT, VT) are structuring transactions to mitigate regulatory risk.

Besides credit supports, senior tranche investors have additional structural protection in the form of cumulative net loss rate triggers, which lead to accelerated repayment of principal in the event of worse-than expected collateral performance.

Such CNL trigger profiles represent the first order approximation of loss timing curve. If the CNL triggers are set too tight, the triggers have elevated risk of being breached, leading to reputational hazard to the issuer; if too wide, the original bond rating may be challenged and the senior bond holders may not receive the structural protection they expected.

 

Honeymoon’s Over for Peer-to-Peer Lending (Bloomberg), Rated: A

If they were, perhaps Promise Financial would still be making loans to finance wedding dresses and cakes and bad DJ’s. This relatively young firm was offering to make unsecured loans of around $10,000, typically for weddings, and charged interest rates that went up to nearly 30 percent.

But it stopped making loans at the end of January, according to a Bloomberg News article on Friday by Matt Scully. Instead, it’s changed its name to DigiFi and will provide technology to bigger banks.

And second, it makes more sense for many smaller online lenders to team up with larger financial operations rather than try to go it alone in an unforgiving and complex world.

This is yet another sign of the slow abandonment of the original vision of peer-to-peer lending in the U.S., where individuals lend to one another in a decentralized, Internet-based platform. The largest online lending firms, such as LendingClub and Prosper Marketplace, finance loans through securitizations, money from institutional investors and banking relationships. Promise, for example, raised around $100 million of funding agreements from investors including Greg Lippmann, a legendary mortgage-debt trader.

Alt-Lending Reshuffles, Auto Loan Alarm Bells And HHGregg Goes Bust (PYMNTS.com), Rated: A

Alt lending, particularly marketplace lending, looks like it is about to become a much smaller neighborhood. The auto-lending market continues to kill canaries in those coal mines at an alarming rate. And the retail death cycle mows on with HHGregg officially declaring bankruptcy and Sears more or less admitting to its shareholders that the same fate may soon befall them.

All in all, Prosper lost $118.7 million last year, up from $26 million in 2015. According to the in-house explanation, those losses are primarily derived from lower loan volumes, higher costs that are also attributed to legal settlements and restructuring efforts.

And Prosper isn’t alone in losing money in marketplace lending — OnDeck reported $85.5 million in annual losses for 2016, and LendingClub is looking at $146 million.

The latest data out of Ally Financial indicates that growth in the auto lending segment will come in between 5 percent and 15 percent of adjusted earnings in 2017.

The National Automobile Dealers Association indicates that its used-car price index has dropped 8 percent from a year ago and now sits at its lowest level in seven years.

Back on March 6, HHGregg filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and, without a buyer in line, it has no choice but to move forward with the filing.

Competing with fintech on business loans isn’t rocket science (American Banker), Rated: A

If you’re a business, applying for a loan from a bank is not a fun experience. For most borrowers, it’s as bad today as it was 20 years ago. Banks in 1997 required borrowers to meet in person with a banker. They asked for piles of paper documents like tax returns and articles of incorporation. They took their time getting back to the business with an answer. And all of that’s true in 2017.

One reason is that fintechs are figuring out ways to win on their own or with large partner banks. These firms give business borrowers a world-class user experience: Websites are beautiful, minimal data is required to start and a loan request can be answered immediately. BlackRock and Vanguard call for delay to fiduciary rule (Financial Times), Rated: A

BlackRock and Vanguard have called on US officials to delay the introduction of landmark rules set to govern America’s $16tn retirement industry just weeks after President Donald Trump ordered a review of the controversial measures.

Mr Trump ordered the DoL to revise or scrap the rule, which the Obama administration predicted would generate $17bn annually in cost savings for American workers and retirees, if it found the measures would limit savers’ access to financial advice or increase litigation against advisers.

The new regime is expected to lead to a rise in financial advisers recommending cheaper passive funds over expensive actively managed products that pay a commission. BlackRock and Vanguard, which have large passive fund ranges, were expected to be among the winners of the measures.

Fifth Third invests in 5-year network upgrade as part of $ 112M contract (American Banker), Rated: A

Fifth Third Bancorp has made a major investment in its electronic network as part of an effort to modernize its branches and partner with fintech firms.

The Cincinnati company discussed the five-year project to upgrade its network Thursday at American Banker’s Retail Banking 2017 conference in Miami. Part of a $112 million renewal of a preexisting contract, the upgrades will allow customer videoconferencing with remote experts, Wi-Fi inside branches, distance learning and real-time data feeds to fintech partners.

Fifth Third has already begun piloting self-service video kiosks in its branches. People tend to be intimidated at first, but once they use a video teller they become comfortable, said Jerry Frederick, chief infrastructure officer at Fifth Third. Wi-Fi in the branches is allowing staffers to help customers using computer tablets.

House Committee Schedules Hearing on the State of Bank Lending (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: B

RateSetter provides update on wholesale lending (P2P Finance News), Rated: AAA

The peer-to-peer lender stopped taking on new wholesale partners last December, after it emerged that the City watchdog had concerns about the practice within the P2P sector.

RateSetter added more details to its annual performance table earlier this month, introducing new sub-categories that include a breakdown of how much of the funds are channelled to wholesale lending.

Last month, the FCA confirmed its position on wholesale lending and highlighted that if a lending business borrows through a P2P platform and lends that money to others, it may be “accepting deposits”.

If the borrower does so without the correct regulatory permissions, this would involve a breach of the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA) and may be a criminal offence.

Of course. When I moved to the UK I had a very limited network here. Luckily, I met my co-founder and CEO John Goodall very early on (July 2013). He had just completed his MBA and had been looking at the burgeoning peer-to-peer lending space – so we were both looking at the opportunity from different sides (John as a saver, and me as a property investor). It was a logical step then to launch Landbay as a peer-to-peer funded mortgage lender.

Our equity funding has been split between private individuals and a number of institutional investors, including a hedge fund and the listed company Zoopla Property Group. As a mortgage lender we also have to raise lending capital.

To date, we’ve been funded by retail investors, but over the course of this year we will be complementing this with significant institutional funding. Getting those facilities in place has been a challenge, but we’ve come out the other side with the capacity to rapidly scale our lending operation.

As a mortgage lender we also collect a lot of data, so applying this data to help streamline other processes, say the provision of insurance, tax/accounting, conveyancing, property management – this is the logical next step. A streamlined process saves on time and cost – and my hope is that we can redirect these savings back into the properties themselves, creating better homes for more people.

Many peer to peer lenders offer IFISAs, but if you do not know about them, most do not tell you about the tax saving option.

Any income paid as interest on loans is wrapped in the ISA and remains tax-free. Money paid into an ISA is not taxed and any cash taken out is tax-free as well.

However, lending money online is risky, which is why the return is often between 5% and 7%, compared with the meagre returns from high street banks and building societies.

Expats remaining UK tax resident while on assignment abroad still pick up ISA tax breaks, but non-residents do not.

In blow to London, EU considers passporting for fintech services (Reuters), Rated: AAA

The European Commission could introduce EU passporting and lower regulatory requirements for financial technology firms, moves that could undercut London’s leading position in “fintech” as Britain gets ready to leave the European Union.

The EU executive’s vice president Valdis Dombrovskis said on Thursday that the Commission is considering how to regulate the expanding sector to encourage its development in Europe, while protecting consumers from risks that may emerge.

He said the Commission was exploring new rules that would give fintech companies passporting rights to expand across borders and operate anywhere within the EU’s single market.

That could threaten London’s status as the European hub for fintech companies, because firms based there are likely to lose their passporting rights when Britain leaves the bloc at the end of a two-year divorce process due to start next week.

RBS mulls mortgage robo advice service, shuts 158 branches (AltFi), Rated: A

The Royal Bank of Scotland is testing its robo advice services for mortgage loans and expects to make a decision on whether to roll it out by the end of the third quarter.

The government-owned bank has already cut hundreds of jobs and replaced them with “robo” like advisors, in an attempt to cut costs.

2016 became the first year when the US lost its dominant global leadership in fintech  –  lost to Asia! Only the previous year, Asian fintech was twice smaller than the US, and just last year, it easily surpassed the US, accounting for 47 per cent of the global volume, as you can find in the new issue of Money Of The Future 2016/2017 fintech report.

While China dominates Asian fintech market by amount of funding, India is number one, in terms of the number of fintech deals (Paytm is the leader).

Fintech helps Chinese SMEs get loans (Straits Times), Rated: A

Mr Li Dongrong, President of the National Internet Finance Association of China, said financial technology, called fintech in short, can help solve the “last mile” problems of delivering banking services to those in remote areas. “In this age of mobile finance, we can achieve a breakthrough in this,” he added.

Indeed, in the last three years, JD Finance, the online finance arm of e-commerce giant JD.com, has lent more than 250 billion yuan (S$50.7 billion) to over 100,000 small business, and given credit worth tens of billion yuan to some 4 million farmers, said Mr Chen Shengqiang, chief executive of JD Finance.

On March 15, the People’s Bank of China issued a report “Development of payment services in rural areas” to summarize and analyze the payment business in China’s rural areas during this past year.

By the end of 2016, the number of users of online banking has witnessed impressive growth in the rural areas, and online banking transactions also grew significantly.

Overall, in the rural areas, online banking maintained stable growth, and mobile banking continued to grow at a rapid speed. While telephone banking transactions fell significantly.

On March 13, Chunghwa Post announced that it would launch a cross-border payment business in April this year with Alipay.

On March 16,Yirendai released its financial results for Q4 of 2016 and full year of 2016. According to the report, the net income was RMB 1.1164 billion (US$160.8 million), achieving a 305% year-on-year growth. However, the subprime loans accounted for around 90% of the total loans, which would be a severe potential risk for the company’s long term development.

Fintech Tracker: Can CreditMonk Make User Reviews Relevant To Small Business? (Bloomberg Quint), Rated: AAA

That’s the idea behind financial technology firm CreditMonk – an open-source platform that allows businesses to rate each other based on payment behaviour.

The company is creating a database which clients can access to get an idea of the payment track-record of firms they may be dealing with. This is not unlike the information that credit bureaus like CIBIL provide. The difference is that while CIBIL gets its data on repayments of loans from banks and financial institutions, CreditMonk depends on ratings generated by users.

The process of rating a company on the website is similar to rating a hotel on a website like TripAdvisor. A reviewer first has to sign in to the website and disclose which company they represent. A company that is listed on the website can then be rated on a scale of one to five on the basis of various parameters.

The reviewer can choose to post the review anonymously on the website but since a log-in is mandatory to write a review in the first place, CreditMonk can investigate claims of a false review, if such a situation arises, Doongursee said.

CreditMonk is likely to face a challenge in building credibility while it sets up its database, according to Mahesh Murthy, a venture capitalist, and a co-founder at Seedfund.

Mobetize Expands B2B Data Top-Up Service to India with Smart Charge (Korea IT Times), Rated: AAA

Mobetize Corp. in Vancouver Canada, a provider of  mobile financial services (MFS) technology for the multi-billion dollar business to business (B2B) segment of the Fintech as a Service (FaaS) sector announced the expansion of its B2B Data Top-up/Gifting service to India with smartCharge from the press release of Globe Newswire on March 24.

Mobile data traffic is expected to increase by 800% on a global basis within five years.

Lufax plans online platform as part of transformation from P2P to wealth management company (SCMP), Rated: A

Lufax, China’s biggest peer-to-peer (P2P) lender backed by Ping An Insurance, is planning to set up a platform to facilitate global asset allocation for middle income earners in Asia and Chinese investors.

The Singapore-based platform will be launched this year, according to Lufax chief executive Gregory Gibb.

The company will also target middle class Asian investors in countries such as India and Indonesia, who want to invest internationally with smaller amounts down to US$10,000.

The challenge for Lufax is how to communicate with customers using standardised information and tell them of investment risks and opportunities via a mobile phone screen – all in 30 seconds to one minute.

Lufax was valued at US$18.5 billion in a January fundraising and is in talks with four investment banks – JP Morgan, Citigroup, Citic Securities and Morgan Stanley – for a planned initial public offering in Hong Kong.

IT Consortium CEO calls for regulatory postponement on Fintech (Ghana News Agency), Rated: AAA

Mr Romeo Bugyei, Chief Executive Officer of IT Consortium has appealed to government to allow the Financial Technology (Fintech) industry in Ghana to grow and be fully established in order to foster the growth of financial inclusion.

Mr Bugyei, who runs IT Consortium, a Fintech organisation engaged in payment aggregation and enabling the use of systems for financial services, said Fintechs help to make things cheaper by giving alternative ways of banking using digital or technological solutions.

He explained that because Fintechs were currently not regulated, they were required to partner with banks when doingtransactions that required depositing, which meant that the banks indirectly regulated Fintechs.

He said the central bank, at the meeting held with Fintechs, declared its intention to leave the sector unregulated for the time being, but said it would monitor the sector to know the technologies being used and guide where there were problems.

He stated that the Bank of Ghana was one of three central banks globally, including the central banks of Philippines and Mexico, that had been selected by BFA Global, to participate in a programme funded by the Gates Foundation called ‘Regtech for Regulators Accelerator (R2A)’ designed to help pioneer the next generation digital financial supervision tools and techniques

Lending Club Q4 Earnings Results Review – The Banks Are Back (Lend Academy), Rated: AAA

Lending Club has released their Q4 2016 and 2016 year-end results. The company originated $1.987 billion in loans, up 1% from Q3 2016 of $1.972 billion. The most significant news of the earnings release was that bank participation totaled 31% of the platform in Q4 2016, up 18% from the previous quarter which shows that the banks are back. In the Q & A section of the earnings call, CEO Scott Sanborn stated, “We’ve got back on a bank by bank level all of the people we were hoping to have back.” This also happened quicker than Scott had expected. Also worth noting is that the company achieved this goal without investor incentives in Q4 unlike in Q2 and Q3 2016 where loans were offered to investors at a discount.

What you’ll also notice looking at the chart below is that the Other Institutional category dropped 5% sequentially, from 18% to 13%. This category of investor includes investment banks, hedge funds and fund managers who typically seek higher yields. Lending Club has tightened credit and adjusted pricing which has had an effect on these investors.

Now the question is whether they can spur some growth in 2017 on the borrower side of the equation. The company also provided guidance for the first time in several quarters which should give investors some idea of what to expect going into 2017.

How the CFP Board is courting the next generation of planners (On Wall Street), Rated: AAA

Amid growing worries that there are not enough new advisers to replace those who are retiring, the CFP Board’s Center for Financial Planning is rolling out a host of new initiatives aimed at expanding and diversifying the workforce.

In the coming weeks, the center will launch an internship program aiming to place workforce re-entrants at planning firms, and a social media campaign geared for students highlighting the diversity of the profession.

How Investors Can Cash In On Soaring Student Debt (Forbes), Rated: A

In Q4 2016, total outstanding student loans topped $1.4 trillion—that’s more than auto loans or credit card debt. The student loan debt market is now only second to the mortgage market in terms of size.

While the consumer price index climbed 44% since 2000, tuition has soared 151%. Students now graduate with an average of $33,000 in student loan debt.

SoFi and CommonBond, the two-main P2P platforms that service students, have issued $8.5 billion in loans. Around $6 billion of that has been securitized by the likes of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

It’s worth noting that the total potential refinance market for P2P student loans is really about $480 billion. The headline $1.4 trillion is reduced because around 40% of loans are too small, and 42% have rates that are too low to be refinanced using P2P.

Students who refinance with SoFi save an average of $288 per month and $22,359 in total. Variable rates range from 2.35%–6.28% and fixed rates from 3.37%–6.74%.

CommonBond offers variable rates from 2.35%–6.27% and fixed rates from 3.37%–7.74%. Borrowers enjoy average savings of $15,114 when they refinance loans through the platform.

In comparison, the interest rate on Federal Direct Loans for undergraduates is currently at 3.76%. Borrowers also pay an additional 1.069% on each disbursement they receive. While this rate is below those offered by P2P lenders, the majority of student loans were made when interest rates were higher, with many students paying up to 8.25%.

Why Lending Startups Like Float Want To Ditch The FICO Score (Fast Company), Rated: A

Last year Social Finance, or SoFi, started using its own proprietary underwriting score in place of FICO when evaluating applications for its student loan, personal loan, and mortgage products.

And now they’re joined by Float, a Los Angeles-based lending startup, whose founders also say they have no plans to use FICO. The platform is launching today, and a look at its business model reveals why it thinks it can survive without it. Float is an app designed for lending small amounts of cash to customers in a pinch. If you’re facing the possibility of an overdraft, for example, a Float credit line, ranging from $50 to $1,000, can help you stay in the black. As with a classic American Express charge card, repayment is due in full the following month. Float also levies a flat 5% transfer fee.

Instead of pulling a FICO score, Float looks at two years’ worth of transaction history in an applicant’s bank account.

It’s also cheaper: Pulling credit reports adds enormous expense to the underwriting process.

Float has also noticed that customers who arrive via Instagram are better borrowers than those who arrive via Facebook.

Lending Club Grows Auto Refinance Gradually (Auto Finance News), Rated: A

Lending Club continues to grow its newly-launched auto refinance product and is investing $5 to $10 million in its expansion, Chief Financial Officer Tom Casey said during the company’s fourth quarter earnings call yesterday.

Early customer feedback has been positive, and refinancing is saving consumers an average of 2.5% off of their rate, or $1,200 in savings over the life of the loan, Sanborn added.

UK bank NatWest has launched a digital platform that lets small and medium sized businesses quickly apply for and obtain unsecured loans of up to £150,000.

  1. Releasing equity – Selling a stake in your business is an effective, yet often overlooked, method of raising cash.
  2. Alternative methods of finance – Asset-based lending or invoice factoring can be helpful ways to release funds and gain a cash injection. Peer-to-peer lending has also gained momentum and popularity and gives business owners a way of raising funds on their own terms. It is encouraging to see that banks are rolling out direct lending services to their customers, whether it be via an in-house offering or through a collaboration with an established P2P platform. This is especially good news for borrowers, particularly SMEs as it enables them to access much-needed investment more easily.

We’ve seen the direct lending market grow in leaps and bounds since its inception, as volatile stock markets and declining returns on ‘go-to’ investment products has led to an influx of investors looking for the middle ground between high risk and low returns.

Banks are responding to this investor demand and evolving their traditional models so they can take advantage of the direct lending space. We see this as the continuation of a trend towards the blurring of boundaries across the direct lending landscape – encompassing both traditional financial companies and more recent start-ups.

At BondMason, we don’t view this as negative competition to the P2P platforms already in this space, or vice versa. Rather, we think these different offerings will complement the industry and encourage improved standards and better self-regulation as more participants enter the market – a ‘flight to quality’ which we certainly welcome.

The move by the banks also supports the growth of what is becoming a mainstream asset class, demonstrating that P2P lending is now recognised and being embraced by the traditional banking and finance sector.

As this move by the banks comes some 10 years after the commencement of P2P lending, it is a great example of how innovation in established industries, such as banking, is often best done by smaller, new entrants. This further supports the requirement of the regulator to ensure, through its programmes such as the Innovation Hub and Regulatory sandbox, that SMEs and innovative companies are supported and fostered, and that barriers to entry are kept low for new, emerging business models.

Interview with Frédéric Dujeux, Co-Founder of Mozzeno (P2P-Banking), Rated: A

mozzeno is a Belgian fintech founded in December 2015. We have just launched the first digital platform to enable private individuals to participate indirectly in the funding of loans to other private individuals. Loans are granted by mozzeno, acting as a regulated lender. mozzeno then finances or refinances these loans thanks to the issuance of Notes (financial instruments).

The company has been initially founded and funded by my partner, Xavier Laoureux, and me.

Some fintech business angels and W.IN.G (a Belgian seed fund) have taken part to a seed round in Q2 2016. A further funding round should take place in the course of 2017.

Well, actually p2p lending as such is forbidden by law in Belgium. On one hand, the European prospectus law has been adapted locally very strictly, preventing individuals to raise funds publicly, even through an intermediary platform. This means that a borrower candidate cannot invite other people publicly to lend him money. On the other hand, one needs to be a regulated lender to grant loans and to get access to the Central Individual Credit Register. There is a new regulation as from November 2015, this regulated lender status now being supervised by FSMA.

Our regulatory model is then two-sided. We were the first Belgian regulated lender approved by the FSMA as per the new regulation, and this allows us to grant loans for Belgian residents. We also published a base prospectus, also approved by the regulator, allowing us to issue Notes on a continuous basis. These Notes are the financial instruments subscribed by the investors, similar to bonds, and mimicking the repayment behaviour of the underlying loan.

Crowdlending, a trend among large companies (Impulsando Pymes Digital), Rated: A

The profile of companies that rely on crowdlending to obtain financing has been changing considerably since this alternative financing method landed in Spain in 2013. The companies financed by Arboribus are solvent companies that could be financed with other banking entities, on average have about 20 years of life and most have experienced sales growth in recent years. We are talking about the segment of audited companies that resort to crowdlending to finance and that has grown 160% in 2016.

Not only is the profile of companies looking for financing alternatives changing, but there is also a growth in the volume of companies financed and their volume of loans requested. This is indicated by data provided by Arboribus, a crowdlending platform pioneering companies in Spain, which has financed 90 companies with more than 130 loans in 2016, reaching a total of 5.8 million euros funded in a year, 65% More than in 2015.

However, the most relevant data linked to these figures is the increase in audited companies with invoices in excess of 10 million euros, a figure that reaches 15 percentage points of the total portfolio of the platform, including some invoicing more than 20 Million and have a team of more than 200 workers.

Auswide Bank Takes Over Controlling Majority of P2P Lending Service MoneyPlace in Australia (P2P-Banking), Rated: AAA

Auswide Bank Ltd (ASX:ABA) is increasing its equity stake in peer-to-peer lender MoneyPlace Holdings Pty Ltd (MoneyPlace). Auswide Bank will have a controlling interest of at least 51% in MoneyPlace with the prospect of increasing that interest up to 75% dependent on the final take up of other MoneyPlace shareholders in a capital raising initiative being undertaken by MoneyPlace.

The appointment of Michael Burke as national sales manager this week coincides with OnDeck announcing a partnership with the Commercial Asset Finance Brokers Association of Australia (CAFBA).

Indonesia authority to allow on-balance-sheet lending for fintech startups (e27), Rated: AAA

Senior officials at the Indonesian financial services authority (OJK) announced on Tuesday that the agency is preparing a regulation that would allow local fintech companies to lend money directly to their customers, a practice known as on-balance-sheet model.

Fintech companies offering on-balance-sheet model are required by regulation to convert into the P2P lending scheme.

M360 Advisors Registers Fund with South Korea Financial-Industry Regulator (Benzinga), Rated: AAA

A commercial real estate debt fund managed by Money360-affiliate, M360 Advisors, successfully registered with the South Korea Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), Money360 announced today.

FSS registration allows South Korean hedge funds, corporations, pension funds, insurance companies and other institutional investors to participate in the fund. Since becoming registered, the fund has received more than $65 million to date from one of South Korea’s oldest and largest financial institutions, and M360 anticipates receiving more than $250 million in aggregate throughout the first half of 2017.

“FSS registration opens M360 Advisors to an entirely new country of institutional investors, which will allow us to substantially increase our assets under management,” said Evan Gentry, M360 Advisors CEO. “This gives us a considerable competitive advantage that has been heightened significantly with an anticipated $250 million investment in our fund from one of South Korea’s most reputable financial institutions.”

M360 Advisors currently works with foreign investors from South Korea, China, Singapore, South Africa, Europe, Canada, the Netherlands and Kuwait, with further expansion underway.

South Korea is the latest in the company’s strategic business plan to bolster its global reach, with an intensified push into South Africa and China planned in the near future.

The fund provides investors with a short-duration, high-yield fixed-income alternative to traditional fixed-income investments. The fund invests in bridge loans collateralized by U.S. commercial real estate property secured with a first-priority lien at conservative loan-to-value ratios.

Gentry said the level of scrutiny going into the application process for FSS registration is high, and Money360 is one of the only marketplace lending platforms with an affiliated private debt fund to be sanctioned by the FSS.

“The registration of the fund with the FSS speaks to its institutional caliber,” Gentry added.

“The fund was designed for universal appeal to various types of investors throughout the world with significant consideration given to international tax efficiency,” added Money360 COO and M360 Advisors President Dan Vetter.

Vetter cited the extended period of low interest rates throughout the world caused by unprecedented central bank intervention as an impetus for launching the fund.

“Equity markets are overvalued and traditional fixed income investments offer minimal yield, making this type of private debt fund attractive relative to more traditional asset classes,” he added.

Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, Monash Business School & Tsinghua University Partner On Asia Pacific Alt Finance Study (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: B

The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance at University of Cambridge Judge Business School, Australian Centre for Financial Studies at Monash University and Tsinghua University Graduate School at Shenzhen have teamed up to launch the 2016-2017 Asia-Pacific Region Alternative Finance Industry Survey.  The consortium has gained the support of more than 20 major industry organizations across the region. The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance (CCAF) says this is the largest regional study to date focused on crowdfunding, peer-to-peer lending & other forms of alternative finance.

This benchmarking survey, opening today (February 15, 2017) aims to capture the key trends including the development, size, transaction volume and growth of alternative finance. The study will also gauge the impact of changing regulations on innovative finance in markets across Asia in 2016 – building on last year’s inaugural study.

The research will be made publicly available in Q2 of this year.
