Prosper Officially Launches HELOCs with First Bank Partner BBVA (Lend Academy), Rated: AAA

It was last November when we first heard that Prosper had plans to expand their offerings from personal loans into HELOCs.  In 2018 David Kimball noted that they would be partnering with banks on the new product and loans would be available both directly through Prosper.com and also as a white-labeled offering. Now we know their first bank partner is BBVA.

LendingClub beats profit estimates on higher fees, loans (Reuters), Rated: AAA

Online lending pioneer LendingClub Corp (LC.N) beat analysts’ estimates for third-quarter profit on Tuesday and forecast current-quarter largely above estimates, sending its shares up 4% in after-hours trading.

Transaction fees jumped 17% at the company, which helps connect customers looking for loans to individuals or institutional investors, such as banks, through its online marketplace.

Loan originations soared 16% to $3.35 billion in the third quarter, with total revenue rising 11% to $204.9 million.

LendingClub Q3 2019 Earnings Results Review (Lend Academy), Rated: AAA

Revenue also topped records at $204.9 million, up 11% year over year. Losses narrowed to a GAAP net loss of just $400,000 compared to the prior year period where they lost $22.8 million. Adjusted net income came in at $8 million, up from a loss of $7.3 million in the prior year period.

Pennsylvania regulators hit SoFi with enforcement action (American Banker), Rated: AAA

A subsidiary of Social Finance Inc. has agreed to pay a $110,000 fine in Pennsylvania after operating as a mortgage servicer for nearly a year without the required state licensing.

SoFi Lending Corp. is one of several mortgage companies that has been hit recently with enforcement actions in Pennsylvania after a change in state law in December 2017.

The new law required mortgage servicers that were operating in Pennsylvania to be licensed. Companies had until June 30, 2018, to apply without being penalized for unlicensed activity.

Prosper Marketplace Issuance Trust, (PMIT) 2019-4, is counting on a de-leverage transaction structure that will boost its credit enhancement levels over time, as it seeks to sell $138 million in securities backed by unsecured consumer loans.

Digital Asset Lending Snapshot (Genesis Capital), Rated: AAA

In the third quarter of 2019, Genesis added $870M in new originations, breaking our record of $746M set in the previous quarter. As of September 30, 2019, active loans outstanding stood at $450M, roughly flat from the previous quarter despite a significant decrease in Bitcoin’s price.

Originations increased 38.1% QoQ marking a sixth consecutive quarter of strong growth and bringing total originations to $3.1B since we launched the lending business in March 2018. Furthermore, the leverage ratio in the most affordable cities is 2.25, compared with a ratio of 2.81 for the whole country.
  • Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Detroit are where buyers are taking the smallest loans relative to their incomes. An average leverage ratio of 2.08 could make these cities attractive to potential homebuyers.

Varo crosses 1 million customers, with plans to become a bank by 2020 (Bank Innovation), Rated: A

Digital banking brand Varo has 1 million customers, and is pushing ahead with plans to become a nationally-chartered bank early next year, CEO Colin Walsh told Bank Innovation Tuesday.

Varo offers checking accounts, savings accounts and installment loans. Becoming a nationally-chartered bank will help Varo differentiate through an expansion of its product suite, said Walsh. Like other digital-only banks, Varo intends to grow relationships with customers through multiple product relationships and integrations with other platforms. According to the company, 60% of its customers have more than one product relationship with the brand.

Blend, a fintech that initially specialized in software for mortgage lenders, is expanding into auto loans in the latest example of a startup broadening well beyond its initial area of expertise in an effort to appeal to more customers.

As Digital Transactions Increase, Financial Services and Lending Firms Bear the Growing Cost of Fraud (PR Newswire), Rated: A

For every dollar of fraud loss, financial services companies now incur $3.25 in costs (losses related to the transaction face value for which firms are held liable, plus fees and interest incurred, fines and legal fees, labor and investigation costs and external recovery expenses), up from $2.92 in 2018.   • Expansion of Mobile – There has been a significant increase in the use of mobile channels since 2018, with 73% of financial services (a 66% increase) and 71% of lending firms (an 8% increase) now offering this option to customers. This growth stems primarily from small financial services firms and digital financial services and lending firms now transacting through the mobile channel.
  • More Cross-Border Transactions – International transaction volume has risen among both mid/large-sized digital banks and all digital lenders. However, mortgage lenders have reported a significant drop in foreign transactions, which coincides with a decline in global growth and housing inventory.
  • The Rise of Botnets – A majority of banks reported double-digit year-over-year growth in botnet activity, which appears to at least be related to banks with international business reporting more transactions. Nearly half (47%) of mortgage lenders reported an average increase of 16% in botnet activity since last year. While surveyed firms appear to be aware of botnet activity, they have not been able to adequately prevent it.

As Gen Z Comes of Age, Credit Market Activity Shows Significant Growth (TransUnion), Rated: AAA

Gen Z, those individuals born in 1995 or after, increasingly took part in the consumer credit market during the first half of 2019. The newly released Q2 2019 Industry Insights Report from TransUnion (NYSE: TRU) found that growth is coming from the entire Gen Z demographic who are 18 years or older – not just those who became credit eligible for the first time.

Approximately 14 million Gen Z consumers (44% of this group) were carrying a balance as of Q2 2019, up from 11 million in Q2 2018, according to the report. The number of Gen Z consumers who were credit eligible (18 years or older) increased by 4.5 million in the last year, rising to 31.5 million in Q2 2019. Over the next three years, it is anticipated that another 13 million Gen Z consumers will become credit eligible.

Mortgages had the largest year-over-year growth rate spike with Gen Z consumers (112%), but from a low base. Securitization, in layman language, refers to the selling of illiquid loans by converting them into marketable securities via a process of bundling thousands of small loans into one single security. The buyers of the securities earn returns when people pay back their loans. Securitization provides the twin benefits of increased market liquidity because of easy buying and selling and lower cost to the borrower as the risk of holding (and managing) a small loan gets consolidated.

As per the U.S. Department of Treasury, P2P loan securitization has emerged as a prime funding avenue in the U.S., capturing investment of around $13 billion in 2017. The trend started when Eaglewood Capital Management undertook the first P2P loan securitization in 2013. The transaction was worth $53 million in value. The deal involved securitizing unsecured consumer loans originated by Lending Club.

The securitization of loans helps to tap a new market that may not be available otherwise. In the Eaglewood securitization deal, the final buyer was an insurance company that was not able to directly invest in Lending Club loans. But the securitization deal allowed the insurance company to fund the P2P loans. In 2014, Eaglewood announced yet another round of securitizations worth $75 million.

Along with institutional involvement, the participation of rating agencies in P2P securitizations has also gained momentum. For instance, Blackrock’s securitization of $327 million in Prosper loans was rated by Moody’s and it became the first rated MPL securitization in history. The first quarter of 2017 saw all securitization deals being rated by the rating agencies. Another Prosper loan (Prosper’s PMIT 2017-1) was rated by Fitch, which represents the growing acceptance of P2P securitizations across such agencies. With rating agencies entering the market, even the skeptical institutional investors should not be far behind.

The Growth of MPL Securitization

The increasing securitization of loans is seen as a shift in the P2P loan market as they fight the traditional banking industry for the multi-trillion dollar lending market. This will help the MPL industry go mainstream in its aim to raise funding, and will also deepen the market. Even more importantly, it will bring an additional level of oversight for young lending startups.

Large institutional investors and Wall Street are actively observing the developments in the sector and simultaneously undertaking their research. This signals a strong future of institutional participation in the industry. In the end, if MPL players are able to deliver the promised returns over an extended period of time, fixed income investors will be forced to invest in MPL securities in search for higher yields.

Deal Book

SoFi, the student loan giant, securitized a total of $727 million in loans by issuing SoFi Consumer Loan Program notes in November 2017. The transaction was recorded as the largest offering by an MPL company to date. The company claimed to be one of the U.S.’s biggest sponsors of ABS, completing deals worth $6.5 billion over the past year.

A total of seven deals worth $4.3 billion were finalized in the first quarter of 2018. The total volume indicated an increase of 34% year-on-year against the total volume in the first quarter of 2017. Out of the total issuance, student loan deals accounted for $2.1 billion. SoFi ,who had issued $1.8 billion in just two deals, led the student loan segment.

Average Deal Size Over Time

The Q3 2018 Securitization Report by PeerIQ confirms the growth trend. There were eight MPL securitizations this quarter worth a total of $3.5 billion. The industry has seen a cumulative $40 billion over 134 deals. All deals were rated, and rating agencies seem to be warming up to the sector with 119 upgrades as compared to just 12 downgrades. Wall Street has (as usual) joined the party with Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, and Credit Suisse dominating the issuance league with a combined 57% market share.

Conclusion

The Asset Backed Securities market is backing the MPL industry and record issuances with tightening spreads, and dropping yields are an important testimony to the fact. Investors are voting with their wallets, and they like what they are getting with the burgeoning MPL industry. But the Fed has started with its rate-tightening cycle, and the first wave of defaults will sooner or later hit marketplace lenders. This will help in determining the actual depth in the MPL market and how much the industry has matured.

LendingClub: Looking Healthier Than Ever (Seeking Alpha) Rated: AAA

Investors are barely noticing it, but LendingClub (LC) continues to pump through another record-setting quarter as the P2P lending platform shores up its core business and boosts its profit targets for the year. Volatility has largely left LendingClub stock; the company has traded in the $3-4 range for the better part of this year as investors have moved on to more exciting names, but in my view, LendingClub is well-positioned for a near-term rebound.

Court appoints lead plaintiffs in class action against LendingClub (Northern California Record) Rated: A

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California appointed lead plaintiffs in a class-action suit against LendingClub, alleging the San Francisco-based company tried to artificially inflate securities and defraud investors.

The plaintiffs, under the title LendingClub Investor Group (LIG), include Xiangdong Ding and Zhenbin Chen, who will serve as lead plaintiffs in the suit according to the Nov. 7 ruling. Ding and Chen invested in and allegedly suffered substantial monetary losses as a result of the fraud.

FUNDING Circle US has found that the majority of US consumers still make the effort to shop at independent small businesses and would be willing to pay more for the same item than it costs at e-commerce giant Amazon.

The peer-to-peer business lender, which recently floated on the London Stock Exchange, published the results of a survey on US consumers’ support for small businesses.

It found that 77 per cent of 2,171 US adults surveyed said they were willing to pay more for items at small businesses in order to keep money within their communities and support local jobs.

Auto loans, credit cards and personal loans all saw year-over-year growth in subprime originations this past quarter, a sign that lenders are returning to this space following several consecutive quarters of declining originations. The latest TransUnion (NYSE: TRU) Industry Insights Report includes insights into consumer credit trends around personal loans, auto loans, credit cards and mortgage loans through the third quarter of 2018.

TransUnion’s report found that origination growth in the subprime risk tier grew at a significant rate across auto, personal loans and credit cards following declines in 2017. Subprime originations in the personal loan category grew 28% between Q2 2017 and Q2 2018 (originations are viewed one quarter in arrears to account for reporting lag), compared to a yearly decline of 7.1% over the prior year. Auto showcased a similar trend, as independent lenders began issuing new loans to subprime consumers following industry pullback in 2016 and 2017. Subprime auto originations increased 7.3% year-over-year, after falling 7.8% year-over-year in Q2 2017.

That is the groundbreaking conclusion of University of California at Berkeley researchers who found that algorithmic credit scoring using big data is no better than humans at evening the playing field when it comes to determining home mortgage interest rates.

Both online and human lenders earn 11 to 17 percent higher profits off minority borrowers by charging African Americans and Latinos steeper rates, the study said. Black and Latino consumers pay 5.6 to 8.6 basis points higher interest on home purchase loans than their white or Asian counterparts with similar credit profiles — no matter whether they obtained their loans through a face-to-face process or online. The effect is smaller when it comes to refinancing, with black and Latino borrowers paying 3 basis points more.

Tencent reboots profits as growth picks up beyond games (Nikkei Asian Review) Rated: AAA

China’s Tencent Holdings handed investors a much-needed profit recovery in the third quarter as revenue rose beyond online games, but the company warned that stricter regulation by Beijing on online advertising could sap growth.

Cash-Strapped Online Lenders Ordered to Repay Investors (Caixin Global) Rated: A

Some local governments have ordered cash-strapped peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms to begin repaying their investors to head off growing turmoil in the industry.

Hangzhou-based P2P lending platform Yucaiyuan recently announced that the company “did not meet regulatory requirements and was ordered to start repaying (investors),” according to a post on the lender’s website (link in Chinese). The firm will have to repay the principal and interest on all outstanding loans until investors are fully repaid. It has 12 months to do so.

Regulators in the eastern city want to rein in what had once been runaway growth in the industry. They plan to do this by clearing out small and midsize platforms one step at a time, a P2P lender told Caixin.

Advice demand soaring in Australia despite trust issues (International Investment) Rated: AAA

The 2018 Financial Advice Report from Investment Trends found that an estimated 2.1 million adults intend to turn to a financial planner for advice, up from 1.6 million in 2017.

However, trust levels in banks and financial planners fell severely over that same period. On a scale of 0 to 10, banks fell from a trust rating of 5.5 to 4.8, while financial planners fell from 5.1 to 4.8.

Under the revised draft Law on Securities, the foreign ownership ratio in a public company is expanded up to 100 per cent. Previous regulations had capped foreign ownership at 49 per cent. However, this ratio in commercial banks, which is a much-concerned issue recently, was not mentioned in the draft. Why?

The draft has removed limits on how many voting shares foreign investors can buy in public Vietnamese companies. This indicates that the Government has sped up the equitisation process in State-owned enterprises, especially in non-essential sectors that are not too sensitive to the economy. However, under the draft, some conditional business lines, such as commercial banks, would retain their existing 30 per cent limit. I agree with this provision of the drafting agency.

How Standard Chartered Bank is tackling digital disruption (Tech in Asia) Rated: A

While banks have not been immune to the technology bug that has spread in the last few decades, digitization in the industry has only largely been implemented “for purpose in the back end,” according to Michael Gorriz, group chief information officer at Standard Chartered Bank.

FTC puts student lenders on notice by citing misleading ads at SoFi (American Banker) Rated: AAA

SoFi has agreed to settle federal charges that it misled borrowers about how much they could save by refinancing their student loans. The charges were issued by the Federal Trade Commission, which warned other student lenders to steer clear of similar violations.

The commission voted 5-0 on Monday to issue the administrative complaint and accept the agreement with SoFi. The company, which agreed to stop exaggerating potential savings, was not required to pay a civil penalty.

According to the FTC, SoFi over the past two years has inflated — at times doubling — estimates of the average borrower’s savings from student loan refis. The San Francisco company, which in one ad claimed that SoFi customers save an average of $22,359, did so, in part, by excluding from its calculations borrowers who refinance their loans with longer terms and pay more over the lifetime of their loans, the agency said.

Peer-to-peer lending doesn’t get a lot of love on Wall Street, but it’s a win-win for folks looking to borrow money and risk-tolerant income investors willing to lend out their money in the chase for higher yields. LendingClub has had a rough first few years as a public company, and it wasn’t until just a few weeks ago that it settled up on Federal Trade Commission and SEC complaints stemming from company disclosures that ultimately cost its CEO his job.

The platform’s popularity continues to grow. Revenue rose 27% in LendingClub’s latest quarter, and loan originations rose 31% to hit a record $2.8 billion. Guidance wasn’t great. Profitability remains a challenge. The depressed stock has some serious upside as demand for peer-to-peer lending gains — pun intended — interest.

Prosper Performance Update: September 2018 (Prosper Blog) Rated: AAA

Revenues at AXP grew by 9% YoY to $10.1 Bn to achieve record levels. Earnings grew by 22% YoY to $1.7 Bn. NII also grew 17% YoY to $2 Bn. AXP’s premium customer base saw record-low delinquency rates while the net charge-off rate increased slightly YoY to 1.7%.

Capital One Q3 Earnings

COF’s revenues were flat YoY at $7 Bn, but earnings grew by 36% YoY to $1.5 Bn. Growth in NII was modest at 2% YoY to $5.8 Bn. COF was the only issuer who saw a drop in the net charge-off rate by 20 bps YoY to 2.4%. COF also saw its provisions for loan losses decrease by 31% YoY driven by improving credit quality of the credit card and auto loan portfolios. This release in provisions consequently led to a 3% YoY drop in allowance for loan losses to $7.2 Bn on loan growth of 1% YoY.

SYF’s revenues grew by 9% YoY to $3.3 Bn. Earnings grew by 21% YoY to $0.7 Bn. NII grew by 9% YoY to $4.2 Bn. SYF had the highest net charge-off rate of 5% among all issuers, which stayed flat YoY. Loans grew by 14% YoY to $88 Bn. Provision for loan losses grew by 11% YoY and the total allowance for loan losses increased by 16% YoY to $2.9 Bn, slightly outpacing loan growth.

  • Average down payment percentages for conventional 30-year, fixed-rate purchase mortgage offers stayed about the same from the second quarter to the third quarter, rising 0.03 percentage points (18.02% to 18.05%).

Average mortgage down payments drop in Q3 (Mortage Professional America) Rated: A

Average down payment amounts for conventional 30-year, fixed-rate purchase mortgage offers declined during the third quarter, while down payments as a percentage of the price stayed about the same, according to an analysis by LendingTree.

Average amounts fell by almost 10% during the third quarter, decreasing to $47,265 from $52,480. At the same time, average down payment percentages were steady from the second quarter, rising 0.03 percentage points to 18.05% from 18.02%.

The number of businesses that feel their industry is least prepared to detect and prevent mobile device attacks increased 167% compared to a year ago.
  • Businesses reported a 63% increase in mobile fraud. All types, including porting, spoofing, hacking and fraudulent change events, are on the rise. Caller ID spoofing increased by 74%, porting by 69% and SMS interception by 50% compared to 2017.

ABS Professionals Demonstrate Enthusiasm Despite Rising Interest Rates, Survey Finds (ABL Advisor) Rated: A

Capital One survey conducted at ABS East 2018—a conference convening professionals from across the asset-backed securities (ABS) industry—found that most respondents (94 percent) expect buy-side interest in ABS to increase or remain the same in the coming year while only 6 percent expect it to decrease.

Of the challenges facing the industry, only 15 percent of ABS professionals elected increases in interest rates. For the majority of respondents, uncertainty around regulatory requirements (30 percent), increased credit risk (25 percent) and increased competition (24 percent) pose the greater challenges for their businesses over the next 12 months.

State Regulators File Second Lawsuit Opposing OCC Fintech Charter (National Law Review) Rated: A

The Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) has filed a second lawsuit in D.C. federal district court to stop the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) from issuing special purpose national bank (SPNB) charters to fintech companies.  A similar lawsuit was filed last month in a New York federal district court by the New York Department of Financial Services.

Online subprime lender Elevate Credit plunges from record low after earnings (Market Watch) Rated: AAA

Elevate Credit Inc. ELVT, -32.13% closed at a record low Monday, then plunged more than 20% in after-hours trading following an earnings report that included lowered annual guidance and myriad concerns that cropped up in the quarter. Chief Executive Ken Rees called the quarter “unexpectedly challenging” in the announcement, and then ticked off the reasons for the performance.

Elevate, which offers loans online to subprime customers through different products, reported a third-quarter loss of $4.2 million, or 10 cents a share, on revenue of $201.5 million, after reporting a profit of a penny a share on sales of $172.9 million a year ago. Analysts on average expected earnings of 13 cents a share on sales of $200.2 million, according to FactSet.

The company chopped its annual forecast, which previously called for earnings of 55 cents to 90 cents a share on sales of $790 million to $810 million. Now, Elevate expects earnings of 23 cents to 32 cents a share on sales of $790 million to $795 million in 2018. After shares closed at an all-time low of $6.35 Monday, they fell to about $5 in after-hours trading.

Equifax launches real-time Open Banking ID checks (Peer2Peer Finance) Rated: A

CREDIT referencing agency Equifax has teamed up with Open Banking technology provider consents.online to allow it to match customer data and transactions in real time.

It will be used within Equifax’s bank account verifier system that lets lenders compare sort codes and account numbers to its own database.

Users will be able to match identity information such as the consumer’s name, address and date of birth with transaction data provided through Open Banking, helping them verify who someone is faster and help avoid fraud.

American banking is apparently just a bit too boring, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has concluded. Its chairwoman, Jelena McWilliams, told the American Bankers Association conference that the agency will open an innovation office.

This is related to, but slightly different from, the tack taken in July’s report from the Treasury Department that laid out more than 80 recommendations to help nonbank financial firms. The idea then was that nonbank financial firms, which get called fintechs for marketing reasons, don’t get a fair shot because of the regulatory advantages enjoyed by regular old banks.

The message was that regulation was stifling innovation by not regulating nonbank financial firms. Companies like Square, for instance, should be able to get banking charters if they want. (Which they do.)

McWilliams seems to see the problem from the perspective of banks rather than from nonbanks and comes to what looks like a contradictory position: Nonbank fintechs are innovating like crazy and banks aren’t keeping up. But there’s nothing exactly contradictory about saying nonbanks could be doing more things under a more accommodating regulatory regime and that banks aren’t innovating as fast nonbanks.

P2P sector queries data used to justify tabled investor restrictions (Peer2Peer Finance) Rated: A

The industry gathered at a Peer-to-Peer Finance Association (P2PFA) event held in London last Wednesday, to discuss the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA’s) review of the sector ahead of the 27 October deadline for feedback.

The most contentious element of the FCA review was its proposals to introduce categorisation and appropriateness tests for P2P investors. Under the proposed changes, platforms would be restricted to marketing to those who are certified as sophisticated or high-net-worth investors or those that certify that they will not invest more than 10 per cent of their net portfolio in P2P.

At the P2PFA event, which was held under Chatham House rules, stakeholders suggested that the FCA had misinterpreted the findings of a 2016 survey conducted by the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance, which collected responses from investors. It was suggested that the FCA had used these findings as justification for the proposed marketing restrictions.

Almost one in five (19%) fintech companies are now profitable with those aged three years or older now making up 43% of the local industry, up from 31% last year and just 20% in 2016.

Treasury’s plan to legitimize online lenders is good for small businesses (The Guardian) Rated: A

Companies in this industry such as KabbageLending Club and BlueVine have grown significantly over the past few years by offering financing to many small businesses that otherwise would not be able to get loans. Their deals are quick to approve, rarely require collateral and are usually tied in to a customer’s financial systems for close monitoring.

Last month, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency announced that it was moving ahead with its plan to allow online lenders to apply for banking charters. Aussies borrow money not knowing how personal loans are assessed, study finds (Daily Telegraph) Rated: AAA

AUSTRALIANS have borrowed $46.6 billion in personal loans over the past 12 months, research has found, but experts claim many are unaware of how loan applications are assessed and how they may affect their own credit scores.

RateCity analysed Australian Bureau of Statistics data from the past 12 months and found personal loan numbers were up 6.4 per cent year on year, with more than half a million Australians using them to buy cars in that period. The total borrowing for new cars was $8.33 billion at an average loan size of $36,341; while a further $5.88 billion was borrowed for used cars.

On top of this, we borrowed $6.05 billion for debt consolidation and $2.54 billion for household goods, but despite the huge outlay, many borrowers are confused about how personal loans work and why they may not be offered the low interest rates they see on advertisements.

According to the Phnom Penh Post, CFA Vice President, Eddie Lee, stated that Cambodia is currently progressing in its fintech, but startups are slowly starting to surface in the country. Lee also explained that CFA has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Taiwan Fintech Association, Thailand Fintech Association and Singapore Fintech Association to establish bridges with similar groups in the region. He added that the next step is to register the CFA with the Asian Fintech Network.

Consumers are increasingly finding that new technologies are making online lending more accessible, simple and affordable. Online lending has entered the mainstream, yet it is still a long way from challenging the domination of banks in our financial lives. Online lending has also evolved from being a competitor of traditional banks to a collaborator for greater success.

A LendIt 2018 panel discussion moderated by Kevin Wack, a reporter at American Banker, delved deeper into these emerging partnerships between banks and online lenders. The moderator believes that the current discussion is the 2018 version of a 2015 discussion–partnering with banks.

In 2015, the discussion revolved more around how banks should respond to the rise of online consumer lending and whether they should become a part of the revolution. But the current discussion is about how the banking industry has shaped up with the advent of online lending.

Introduction of Panel Members

Barclays: Jeremy Takle is the head of US Digital Consumer Bank at Barclays. Introducing the company, he shared that Barclays is a relatively new entrant in the US online lending segment. The company acquired Juniper Bank in 2004 and launched a consumer lending product in 2016.

Prosper: Usama Ashraf from Prosper discussed how his company emerged as the pioneer in US online lending. The Prosper platform was founded in 2006 and since has facilitatedAshraf over $12 billion in originations.

Lending Club: Sameer Gulati, the COO of Lending Club, was also a part of the panel discussion. Lending Club has done about $32 billion in loans, which runs the gamut of personal loans, business loans, auto re-financing solutions, and patient solutions.

Lightstream: Another panelist was Todd Nelson from LightStream, a company that works to extend loans for practically everything. LightStream is a branch of SunTrust, and making loans is an important part of SunTrust. It focuses on providing the same products as SunTrust but sets broader benchmarks.

Bank, Fintech, and Online Lender Competition

Gulati holds the view that there is an increasing amount of competition from banks, but this will increase opportunity for the industry. The competition will help make online lending a mainstream product. Ashraf also believes that bank competition is increasing, but marketplace lenders are the largest players in the lending space. Banks in the US have large deposits that enable them to grow the asset side of the equation at a comparatively cheaper rate.  As a result, competition is increasing, especially for personal loans.

Takle said fintech lenders are relatively new entrants in the lending space. The fintech sector has undergone a drastic transformation thanks to the changing role of technology and innovation. The huge addressable market that online lending could fill was a major factor that attracted Barclays to this market. Moreover, Goldman Sachs and other regional banks are entering into the market to tap into the huge opportunity.

Nelson believes LightStream is customer-centric. The company designs its products according to the needs of the customer. The debt products are designed to meet the clients’ requirements and to offer flexible repayment structures. When asked how different are the credit standards at LightStream, he said LightStream is a regional bank over 100 years old. The business has a modern risk appetite but is less aggressive compared to other banking companies in the space.

Credit Risk Appetite For Banks

Ashraf Wack said traditional banks have limitations pertaining to the type of risk they will take on due to their investor base.

Gulati discussed how banks are at the top end of the credit spectrum with 40% of buying volume. That comes to about $4 billion for Lending Club. The business is focused on devising ways to say yes to more people in the credit market and is dependent on non-traditional data to increase penetration in the credit markets.

Wack asked the panel to put forth their thoughts on how “Frenemy” is used as a familiar term for the banking sector and fintechs.

Ashraf said he believes collaboration between banking and fintech is critical. In the initial days, it was not clear how banks and fintechs should work together. But now the collaboration is beneficial as banks are meaningful buyers of loans and play an active role in the capital markets. The collaboration of banks with fintechs will also provide opportunities for cross-selling products.

Takle believes there are a lot of opportunities to collaborate across both vertical and horizontal segments in online lending. This allows for rapid scaling with significant funding and access to latent demand.

Bank-Fintech Partnerships

Talking about the growth of Lending Club, Gulati shared the framework for the company’s partnerships with banks. Lending Club has been able to add new product categories on the basis of its discussions with funding partners. He also thinks that protecting the intellectual property of a business is crucial to the growth of the business. At times, few partners are inspired by the business’s products and end up developing similar products.

Nelson went on to say that banks should not be thought of as a monolithic figure and advises online lending platforms not to compete with banks for customer acquisition, but to instead benefit from the combined capabilities of both spaces.

Ashraf believes these relationships usually start with one aspect and, over time, add more elements to a mutually-beneficial relationship.

The Relative Strengths of Banks and Fintechs

Ashraf said the expertise of online lending platforms in tech combined with banks’ ability to attract customers will together help the space grow.

Nelson believes that fintechs are successful in identifying the needs of the customer quickly and banks have expertise to develop scalable products to cater to these needs. He also praised billionaire founder of Prosper and Ripple Chris Larson for his long-term vision.

Talking about banking as a service and its appetite to fulfil the customer’s needs, Ashraf said that a lot depends on the product type and the space for which it is considered. There are three main ways that banks are currently considering the fintech space, he said:

  1. Regional banks are looking to access the customer base of fintechs
  2. Banks want to incorporate technology in their systems
  3. Banks and fintechs can collaborate on a variety of products

The Final Take

Takle believes there are a lot of customers who are looking to shop around for a single product. Gulati emphasized how important customer ownership is for a company. Most players operating in the space do not understand the meaning of the term nor its implementation in business.

Customers do not want to be owned. LendingClub believes that its job is to offer the products, services, and experiences but not to control the customer. If the customer’s need is matched better elsewhere, they should go there.

Prosper strives to offer the best customer experience and works to make sure that customers are well educated on the product that the business is offering.

Conclusion

Ending the panel with a final discussion on marketing partnerships, Nelson said businesses are operating in a space where there are big aggregators who commoditize products and there is massive competition on the price. Although price constitutes an important part of the entire equation, it must not be considered the only parameter. It is important that businesses understand products should not just be commodities in number but something that is a great experience for the customer and provides overall value to all stakeholders.
