Credit Card Usage at All-Time Highs, But Delinquency Rates Still Remain in Check (Global Newswire) Rated: AAA

TransUnion’s report found that serious credit card delinquency rates per borrower (90+ DPD) increased in Q1 2018 to 1.78%, up from 1.69% in Q1 2017. The delinquency rate is now level with the 1.77% mark observed six years prior in Q1 2012, though it remains below the 10-year first quarter average of 1.91%. The average card debt per borrower also followed a similar path as delinquencies during the last year, rising 2.63% to $5,472 in Q1 2018 from $5,332 in Q1 2017.

The number of credit card accounts rose 2.6% in the last year to 416.5 million in Q1 2018, up from 405.8 million in Q1 2017. In that same timeframe, the number of consumers with access to a credit card also increased by 2.1% to 174.9 million from 171.4 million one year ago.

The latest origination data point to a modest 1% growth rate between Q4 2017 and Q4 2016.

New York State Bill Would Add Another Compliance Hurdle with “Limited Charter” for Online Lenders (Crowdfund Insider) Rated: A

How banking is open to innovation (Global Banking and Finance Review) Rated: A

A Finance Pro Wants to Represent District 3 in Congress

Perry Parker is a successful international businessman running in the Republican primary for the 3rd District Congressional seat in Mississippi. Republican Gregg Harper, who currently holds the seat won’t be standing for re-election. Perry would be against a field of four other Republicans fighting for the prestigious seat.

Parker was born and raised in Mississippi with family roots in Covington County, and in District 3. He started off trading grains, cattle, and agricultural produce. He holds an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago, a B.S. in Finance from the University of Southern Mississippi, and an A.B.A. from Pearl River Junior College. With a background in finance, he got a job trading agricultural commodities for Goldman Sachs Group. In 1994, with a capital of around $5,000 and a partnership with local business associates, Parker started FIRST, A National Banking Association headquartered in Hattiesburg, which employs around 500 people with $2.4 billion in assets today.

In 1996, he joined Deutsche Bank as the global head of spot FX trading. He has also achieved success in investing in cattle grazing, cattle feeding, row-crop farming, and other small businesses in Mississippi, California, and the American Southwest.

Parker always aspired to leave a positive impact on the business environment in Mississippi. He aims to enhance education, support a strong military, and apply free market solutions. He wants to work on strengthening the free markets and reduce regulation. Parker is now looking further to serve the great state of Mississippi.
“I want to put my experience in agri-business and finance to work,” he said.

Views On Regulation

Parker believes government has a tendency to over regulate. Currently, banks have been at the end of the barrel with over regulation stifling their ability to lend to small businesses and consumers. He trusts the free market and wants the invisible hand of the market to decide what works for the economy. He wants government to get out of the way and let consumer choose for themselves.

He believes Congress has been overzealous and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has overreached itself by adding heavy compliance burdens on small commercial banks and new age alternative lenders. It is important to regulate the too-big-to-fail banks, but the CFPB needs to ensure that small banks and alt lenders are not driven out of the market because of its unnecessary rule making. He is not sure if the CFPB is even needed and wants to conduct a cost benefit analysis to examine if it actually adds value to the financial ecosystem.

Focusing On Alternative Lending

Parker has himself been involved P2P lending through Lending Club and has been happy with his returns. He wants to encourage alt lending as he feels it is the future of lending. Alternative lending provides benefits to both parties, the lender and the borrower, over traditional consumer lending. With an easy application process, better interest rates, the speed of funding, higher returns, he believes it is a win-win for the stakeholders in the p2p ecosystem.

Parker favors alt lending and its lower rates versus high interest credit card and payday lending. But he is sad to see that institutional investors have started dominating the P2P space. Though he sees the value that institutional investors bring, he is nostalgic for the original peer-to-peer individual-led model.

He also wants to reduce regulation for the sector so that alt lending can grow unconstrained. He wants to remove stipulations that dictate how much alternative lenders can charge or when/how they can advertise. He believes it is good that the sector is aggressively advertising. Only then will people know the benefits of online lending.

Future Perspective

“Americans elected a businessman and political outsider to be our president in 2016. With less political correctness and more bold ideas, our country is moving in a new direction that’s good for America and for Mississippi. But there’s a lot of work left to do,” Parker said in a news release.

He sees a new administration and business climate. The animal spirits long held back by the previous government has been unleashed under Trump and consumer confidence is slowly but steadily increasing. He wants to leverage his international experience in agriculture and finance to usher in a new era of prosperity for Mississippi and the US.

He also reiterated that this election would not only benefit the citizens of Mississippi’s 3rd district but all of the US. His deep domain expertise will help him evaluate proposals on regulations and make sure they do not restrain innovation. He wants to focus on empowering a free market unencumbered with unnecessary regulation, all huge positives for the alternative lending industry.

Parker sums up, “When elected, on my first day in office, I’ll call our president to let him know that he has a uniquely experienced ally in the 3rd District of Mississippi in shrinking the size of government, implementing market-based reforms, and freeing Mississippi businesses to innovate, grow, and prosper.”

Spreads narrow on SoFi’s 1st consumer loan ABS of 2018 (Asset Securitization Report), Rated: AAA

Strong demand and higher credit enhancement allowed Social Finance to offer lower spreads on its first consumer loan securitization of the year, even after upsizing the deal to $850 million from $650 million originally.

Four tranches of rated were issued, resulting in an advance rate of 91%, according to a person familiar with the transaction. The amount of overcollateralization in the deal will gradually build from 9% to 16%.

Two senior tranches of notes rated AA + by KBRA were issued. The Class A-1 tranche, which has a shorter expected life, pays 50 basis points over the Eurodollar synthetic forward curve, in from 57 basis points on the comparable tranche of the previous transaction. The Class A-2 tranche pays 75 basis points over the interpolated swaps curve, in from 90 basis points on the previous deal.

 

Ranger Direct hit by arbitration delay and manager uncertainty (Citywire), Rated: AAA

The New Year rally in Ranger Direct Lending (RDL) shares has come to an abrupt halt after the listed loan fund, which is backed by fund manager Mark Barnett, said arbitration to settle the legal dispute between it and Princeton Alternative Finance had been extended by around two months.

The £119 million investment trust has been locked in an argument with Princeton, a New Jersey-based investment fund in which it is the leading investor, over its exposure to Argon Credit, a US peer-to-peer lending platform that collapsed in December 2016.

Uncertainty over the exposure to Argon – which represents 14% of its £217 million net assets – and doubts over the due diligence by its adviser Ranger Alternative Management (RAM) have hobbled the shares. They fell over 23% last year but had rallied since the end of December when they hit a record low discount of 32% below net asset value. From 704p at the start of the year they recovered to 767p last week but have dropped 4% or 31p today after yesterday’s announcement. Although still wide, the discount has narrowed to just under 13%.

Relx pays £580m for digital identity company (Financial Times), Rated: A

Relx, the UK-listed information and analytics group formerly known as Reed Elsevier, has struck its biggest deal in a decade with the £580m purchase of ThreatMetrix, an online identify verification business.

ThreatMetrix has one of “largest repositories of online digital identities”, according to UBS analysts, and has built a database containing 1.4bn unique online digital identities from 4.5bn devices in 185 countries.

China’s financial risk worse than in US before financial crisis, says former finance minister (Today Online), Rated: AAA

The level of risk facing China’s financial system could be higher than was seen in the United States before the global crash, according to a former Chinese finance minister.

“China’s ratio of M2 [a broad measure of money supply] to gross domestic product has surpassed 200 per cent, which is more than twice that of the United States, yet the average Shanghai interbank offered rate is 4.09 per cent, far higher than the 1.1 per cent in the US.”

According to official figures, the M2 money supply at the end of December was 167.68 trillion yuan (S$34.75 trillion), or 203 per cent of China’s nominal GDP in 2017.

Chinese P2P lending platform Senmiao Technology sets terms for $ 14 million US IPO (NASDAQ), Rated: A

Senmiao Technology, an early-stage Chinese marketplace for peer-to-peer lending, announced terms for its IPO on Tuesday.

The Chengdu, China-based company plans to raise $14 million by offering 3.3 million shares at a price range of $4.00 to $4.50. At the midpoint of the proposed range, Senmiao Technology would command a market value of $109 million.

Today, leading payments provider Klarna has announced a partnership with Maplin – the UK’s number one specialist technology retailer. P2P Lending Set to Explode in 2018 (PR Newswire), Rated: AAA

RBI’s much awaited official guidelines for Peer to Peer (P2P) lending platforms to bring them into the ambit of non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) is set to boost online lending. It is fast emerging as an investment option for retail lenders. The NBFC-P2Ps will act as an intermediary to provide an online platform to lenders and borrowers to transact on mutually agreeable terms. RBI has defined P2P lending as a form of crowdfunding that entails issuing unsecured loans to borrowers via an online portal in its 2016, ‘Consultation Paper on Peer to Peer Lending’. However, P2P lending is different from other crowdfunding activities in being a purely debt product, in which multiple lenders fund borrowers as personal loans or small business loans. Most of the P2P platforms in India such as IndiaMoneyMart curate their borrowers after conducting KYC checks, credit assessment, and due diligence before listing them on their loan exchanges.

On the positives, the regulation has made P2P lending platforms accountable to furnish credit repayment/non-repayment information to all 4 credit bureaus, thereby increasing transparency in the credit rating system. The credit rating agencies have records on about 150 million population but P2P lending platforms are also going to bring customers hitherto relying on private money lenders. This presents a huge opportunity to close the credit information gap. It will also reward sub-prime borrowers with a better credit score for showing improvement in loan repayment behaviour.

As many first time or retail borrowers take loans from money lenders or payday companies which charge interest as high as 5% to 20% per month, P2P platforms like IndiaMoneyMart are bridging the gap by making credit not only accessible but affordable. Bangalore-based IT consultant, Tanmay Thorat* (name changed) was paying over 300% interest to payday loan companies and approached IndiaMoneyMart for a small ticket size loan of INR 1 Lakh secured at rate of 13% annualized interest in March 2016required to settle his credit card debt and pay rent deposit.

The expectation from the Union Budget 2018 is immense in the BFSI segment, especially after RBI regulation. Experts hope that essential financial services will have GST rates revised from 18% to 5% or nil.

Lancers raises $ 9.2m venture round (Deal Street Asia), Rated: AAA

Tokyo-based Lancers, which operates a crowdsourcing platform under the same name, has closed a JPY 1 billion ($9.2 million) round from Tokyo-listed enterprises Persol Holdings and Shinsei Bank.

The investment sees Lancers concluding business partnership contracts with both companies concurrently and will also see it commence its new financing business targeting freelance workers, which the company claims comprise 17 per cent, or 11.22 million workers of Japan’s entire working population.

The addition of Shinsei Bank as an investor will see Lancers, Persol and Shinsei collaborate to develop and provide a new loan service to individual workers who need equipment investment or education/training upon starting a new business.

Tokyo-based property crowdfunding portal Crowd Realty has closed its Series A round at JPY 580 million ($5.2 million) from Tokyo-listed Mitsubishi Estate, Shinsei Corporate Investment, Shinsei Bank, and Mizuho Capital, based on an account from The Bridge.

Growing competition, shrinking bottom lines, stringent regulations, and traditional banks’ willingness to take on alt-lending using their financial muscle were the key trends that emerged last year. It is difficult to be sure what 2018 will bring, but here is what experts and pundits are predicting.

Marketplace Lending

Ron Suber (Founder and former president, Prosper & chairman of the board, Credible) believes the marketplace lending industry has finally grown up. Companies will focus more on cash flow, profitability, and EBITDA. He encouraged online lenders to look for a lower cost of capital if they want to compete with the like of Marcus. He is also predicting the entrance of big technology companies like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google.

Peter Renton (Lend Academy) believes five of the top 25 banks will launch their own platforms. He also believes Congress will pass a Madden fix and the IRS will modernize with its own API. One startling prediction he makes that one of the top online lenders (Lending Club, SoFi, Prosper, OnDeck, or Avant) will be acquired, and he believes a major platform will be hit by a cyber attack. Like everyone else, he believes the tech giants will solidify their positions in alternative lending, and more interestingly, he says messaging apps will integrate with online lending platforms.

Krista Morgan (CEO, P2Binvestor) makes predictions for MPL sector:

  • Companies will shift their focus on business models and unit profitability as hiring and spending decrease.
  • Mergers and shutdowns will continue as equity investors remain absent. She thinks it will be a tough year.
  • Investors believe the market is set for a correction; therefore, they will be looking at short duration assets for deploying their capital. Platforms will have to shift their focus to product development.
  • 2018 will be the year of increased diversity.

Adam Stettner (Founder and CEO, Reliant Funding) predicts a year of instability. He also believes market variables will counterbalance themselves this year. The Fed is expected to increase interest rates, which will have a ripple effect in terms of rates for various types of loans. If unemployment levels remain low, it will lead to wage inflation. So the order of the day for alternative finance and small business funding companies will be adaptability, he says.

Additionally, Stettner sees a year of increased fraud, and companies will have to invest in identification tools and fraud detection techniques.

Two more predictions he points to are increased consolidation as companies overextend themselves and more disruption from big business names entering the space.

The Motley Fool is predicting a Lending Club stock price turnaround.

Juan Tavares (LendingPoint) predicts balance sheet lenders will take over, there will be more collaboration, and payments and credit will intersect more.

Small Business Lending

Trevor Dryer (Co-founder and CEO, Mirador) made predictions on small business lending:

  • Banks will continue to increase small business lending and alternative lenders will struggle.
  • Crowdfunding got a boost last year when Title III of The Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (JOBS Act) was implemented, opening the gates for crowdfunding. Dryer believes this sector will thrive in 2018.
  • Alternative lending has removed physical barriers that makes the lending process faster and more convenient. Alternative lending will continue to be more inclusive and encourage more people to start businesses.
  • Legislative barriers will continue to fall.
  • Alternative lenders will focus on experience and relationship building. Companies able to streamline and automate the application processes will thrive.

Alternative Lending in India

Rajesh Gupta (Founder and CEO, Cash Suvidha) made the following predictions for the Indian alternative lending market.

  • A significant increase in alternative lending market share.
  • Favorable regulations, cash benefits, ease of usage, and increased internet and smartphone penetration.
  • Investors and venture capitalists will remain optimistic about the Indian alternative lending industry since it is the second most funded segment in Indian fintech.

“2018 will witness a transformation in the Indian financial landscape, all thanks to alternative lending,” he writes.

Traditional Financial Services and Alternative Investing

Kevin McPartland (Greenwich Associates) says 2018 will be the year of digital. He believes product-agnostic investing will be huge, and passive investing will gain on active investing. 2018 will also be the year that alternative data goes mainstream, he believes while data will be more important than trading. He also believes wealth management will “come out of retirement” and, finally, a ton of innovation in the financial markets as banks focus on crypto.

Chris Skinner (The Finanser Blog) writes a lot about banking’s reaction to alternative lending. He believes 2018 will be the year of artificial intelligence for banks and that banks will continue to drive digital technology deeper into their core systems. Not surprisingly, he also predicts that banks will develop more proof-of-concept operations for distributed ledger technology. Finally, he predicts the banks will develop an Enterprise Data Architecture this year to clean up their fragmented systems.

Alexander Prokhorov (FinSight Ventures) made some general predictions for fintech that apply just as well to alternative lending:

  • Software will converge with financial products in the U.S. and Europe
  • Insurtech will be more prominent
  • Artificial intelligence will transform financial services
  • There will be a lot of innovation in emerging economies such as Africa, Latin America, and Asia
  • Wealth management will pick up speed
  • Crypo assets and blockchain will take center stage for retail investing

Mitek believes 2018 will be the year of the cyber criminal and predicts there will be 150 million attempts to set up fraud accounts this year.

Don Steinbrugge, CFA (Founder and CEO, Agecroft Partners) is predicting a banner year for the hedge fund industry. He believes hedge fund assets will reach an all-time high for the 10th straight year. He also believes there will be an increase in hedge funds shutting down. And there will be an increase in cryptocurrency funds. Strategies that will gain assets, he believes, include:

  • Asia long/short equity
  • Reinsurance
  • Those that blur the lines between private equity and hedge funds

The Lending-Times Prediction

Allen Taylor (Editor, Lending-Times) believes more U.S. platforms will open the doors to non-accredited investors. Blockchain will feature more prominently in alternative lending with more platforms focused on crypto-lending including a prominent alternative lender adding cryptocurrency to its list of core services. He also believes increased specialization will lead to platforms targeting specific industries, regions/states, and other narrow target markets.

Conclusion

2018 will surely see the alternative lending industry enter a consolidation phase to withstand the changes in market dynamics, and companies best able to cope with these headwinds would emerge bigger and stronger.

Morgan Stanley has made a late push for dominance in the fast-growing market for “robo-advice” in America, launching an automated service aimed at the offspring of its well-heeled customers.

Funds managed by software will grow to $385bn by 2021, according to Cerulli Associates, more than quadrupling from today’s levels.

Morgan Stanley is the latest to pitch in, offering a choice of ETFs, mutual funds and seven themed portfolios, among them sustainability, gender diversity and next-wave technology. CFPB’s Payday Loan, Auto Lending Rules in Jeopardy (Manatt), Rated: A

As we have previously reported, the Bureau’s final rule on payday, vehicle title and other so-called high-cost installment loans created new consumer protections for a wide variety of short-term loans and provided official staff interpretations of the rules. Nearly 1,700 pages in length, the rule was issued on Oct. 4.

One of the more controversial provisions of the rule declares it an “unfair and abusive practice” for any lender to make covered short-term or longer-term balloon-payment loans, including payday and vehicle title loans, before reasonably determining that consumers have the ability to repay the loans according to their terms. Pursuant to the rule, it would also be an unfair and abusive practice to make attempts to withdraw payment from consumers’ accounts after two consecutive payment attempts have failed, unless the consumer provides a new and specific authorization to do so.

Now the rule—which is currently set to take effect Jan. 16, 2018—may see the same fate as the arbitration rule. H.J. Res. 122, introduced by Rep. Dennis Ross (R-Fla.), states “That Congress disapproves the rule submitted by the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection relating to ‘Payday, Vehicle Title, and Certain High-Cost Installment Loans’ and such rule shall have no force or effect.” Significantly, H.J. Res. 122 includes Democratic co-sponsors.

Auto Finance—Another Bureau rule may soon be on the road to CRA repeal after the Government Accountability Office (GAO) wrote to Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) in response to a query about CFPB Bulletin 2013-02.

More than 53,000 single-family homes and condos were flipped nationwide in the second quarter of 2017 alone for a home-flipping rate of 5.6 percent of second-quarter home sales, according to Attom Data Solutions. The estimated total dollar volume of financing for homes flipped in second-quarter 2017 was $4.4 billion, the highest level since third-quarter 2007, nearly a 10-year high.

A joint study by the University of Cambridge and the University of Chicago suggests that the alternative lending sector, which includes crowdfunding, “hit a stride” in 2016 and has plenty of room for growth. Real estate crowdfunding accounted for just 2.3 percent of the alternative lending market in 2015, but its volume rose by 70 percent in 2016.

Why JPMorgan, Amex, HSBC are backing ‘isolation’ web browsing (American Banker), Rated: AAA

Often users are tricked by phishing emails that mimic a legitimate note from the boss or a senior corporate leader. And the links and sites can look secure. According to PhishLabs, nearly 25% of all phishing sites in the third quarter were hosted on HTTPS domains — almost double the rate of the previous quarter.

As part of their effort to deflect these attacks, some banks are turning to isolated browsing, or remote browsing, technology. Such systems force all internet activity to happen in a protected space on the cloud, preventing malicious code from reaching a company’s network. The technology is not brand new, but it is starting to gain traction as some large banks have finished their testing of it and are going public with their use of it.

JPMorgan Chase, American Express and HSBC announced Monday that they are leading a $40 million round of funding in the isolation-tech provider Menlo Security, bringing its total funding to $85 million.

Niche lending and fintech cross paths in Silicon Slopes (Utah Business), Rated: A

There are, however, entire demographics not serviced by tried-and-true lending institutions. Often, these folks’ credit score fails to meet a bank’s minimum standards. Or they need unconventional terms on an equipment or business loan. Whatever the reason, these transactionally marginalized sectors find themselves at the mercy of high-interest lenders. Or with no access to capital at all.

“There is a significant population of U.S. consumers who can’t get a loan,” notes Nate Heward, CFO at Acima Credit, a company that provides a point-of-sale credit platform.

Capitalism abhors a void

From the ubiquitous strip mall payday lender to the world of microfinance, a plethora of entrepreneurial solutions has emerged to get cash in the hands of would-be borrowers cut off from other avenues. These alternative lending practices have various degrees of reputability; a wide spectrum exists between the purely predatory lending shop, on the one hand, and the creative value-adding venture, on the other.

Scratching the consumer itch

In practical terms, Acima asks four simple questions of the would-be borrower:

  1. Do you have a three-month history with your current employer or source of income?
  2. Do you deposit $1,000 or more into your checking account each month?
  3. Have you had a checking account for at least 90 days?
  4. Is your checking account free from NSFs, excessive overdrafts and negative balances?

It’s all fintech

The companies profiled in this article may not be considered fintech firms per se; they’re not using technology to create a new financial paradigm a la Paypal, Indiegogo or Coinbase. They’re merely offering tried-and-true solutions to untapped consumer markets. Viewed from another angle, however, they’re fintech companies through and through. Acima, Progressive, et al are racing to deliver the most convenient financial solutions to the most people in their target customer base. And to do so, they’re relying on technology all the way.

Ilann Maazel, an attorney for the Lower East Side People’s Federal Credit Union, told the Washington Examiner that the credit union is suing because of the feared effect of Mulvaney policies.

The legal dispute centers on whether the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform, which set up the CFPB, makes the deputy director the acting director if there’s a vacancy, or whether the older Federal Vacancies Reform Act gives the president that power.

US Bank sees success with Zelle (Business Insider), Rated: A

US Bank integrated Zelle — which has over 30 other banking partners like Bank of America (BofA), JPMorgan Chase, and Citi — last year. The bank saw a 104% increase in Zelle transactions in the past four months, and a 50% increase in customer enrollment in the P2P offering during that time.

Crowdfunding a mission to save capitalism from itself (Financial Times), Rated: AAA

Jeff Lynn is on a mission to save capitalism from itself at a time when millions feel locked out, and unable to foresee themselves better off than their parents. His answer: to democratise capital.

That is one reason he founded Seedrs, an online platform through which individual investors can buy shares in high-growth companies at an early stage — a privilege once reserved for institutions and private equity funds. The other reason was to make money.

Seedrs, which along with Crowdcube dominates the UK market, has funded more than 540 deals, representing £280m of investment. Some were follow-on rounds, and in total about 400 companies have been funded. About 20-30 companies are live on the site at any time.

Crowdfunding by numbers

Critics say a big difference between crowdfunding and the stock market is liquidity — you cannot just sell your stake. But Seedrs has begun a secondary market and says it has had several exits already.

Free Agent, a Scottish maker of accounting software, floated in November 2016 at 87p. Its shares remain below the 100p Seedrs investors paid, though some sold when it hit 140p this year. Chapel Down, a vineyard, was already quoted on the Nex exchange (formerly ISDX) when it raised money at 28p a share in October 2014. It has been trading around three times that level.

With Norrsken House, ex-Klarna executive envisions a global network of co-working spaces focused on impact (TechCrunch), Rated: A

He launched the Norrsken Foundation later that year with about $20 million of his own money. By early 2017, the first fruits of that funding took shape with the opening of Norrsken House, a co-working space in Adalberth’s hometown of Stockholm dedicated to companies that are developing technologies that have a social impact.

Now, Adalberth has committed an additional $62 million of his own money to expand that vision. The goal, he said, is to eventually create a network of 25 impact-focused co-working spaces and foundation hubs around the globe in the next 10 years. ID Finance raises $ 8.5m via exchange-traded bonds to support growth (Finextra), Rated: AAA

ID Finance, the emerging markets fintech company, today announced successful completion of its first issuance of exchange-traded bonds.

The company raised $8.5m from the bond registered in Russia and listed on the Moscow Exchange. It was the first tranche of a $170m bond issuance programme that the company plans to support global expansion.
The bond, which was oversubscribed, has a maturity period of three years and a quarterly coupon payment frequency.

Banks, fintechs and a Brit royal to build green-lending blockchain (American Banker), Rated: A

Could fintech help the planet cope with climate change?

Some major players — Prince Charles; bankers from Barclays, Standard Chartered, and BNP Paribas; three fintechs; and professors from the University of Cambridge — all hope the answer is yes.

On Tuesday at the One Planet Summit in Paris, they are expected to announce they are developing blockchain technology that lets banks see which potential borrowers use environmentally sustainable practices and therefore are worthy of preferential lending terms. Such disclosures presumably would put pressure on companies to pollute less.

RateSetter’s Australian business hits $ 200m milestone (AltFi), Rated: AAA

RateSetter Australia has hit the AUD$200m mark in lending a little over three years removed from launching down under. The platform, which lends to both businesses and individuals, has doubled its lending volumes over the past six months.

Interestingly, 56 per cent of its investors withdrew money from bank savings accounts in order to divert them into the platform, while a further 17 per cent reallocated money from bank term deposits. The greatest proportion of the platform’s investors are millennials, at 58 per cent, although they invest the least amount of money on average of any age group at $9,454. Retirees (aged 65 and over) by contrast invest an average of $66,118.

India

Understanding the Data Protection White Paper Part XI: Establishing proper deterrent consequences for privacy violations (Tech 2), Rated: AAA

Consider also the case of Sitesearch in the US, where the company bought payday loan applications and sold them to third parties, which included fraudsters, who used the data to steal more than $25 million from user accounts. Such careless buying and selling off of data should not be justifiable in the name of consent. While safeguards such as requiring that companies transfer data to only to companies with a comparable level of privacy provisions help, these must be backed up by huge penalties for violations.

For example, consider the Equifax data breach, the breach of a credit information company, leading to the loss of crucial data of over 143 million Americans. This breach was the result of a vulnerability in their web application software, a vulnerability that was discovered and for which a patch had been issued at least 2 months before the actual hack. The breach of this crucial data was thus the result of negligent, or non-implementation of the patch.

A landmark privacy judgment in India is the Canara Bank case, which struck down a provision in a law, which allowed the authorisation of ‘anyone’ to conduct investigations and demand the production and seizure of documents, including bank documents. Such a wide delegation of powers can allow any and everyone, even unscrupulous actors, permission to gain access to confidential data, which should not be allowed.

This case draws attention to an important aspect of data protection — it must be ensured that investigations, at all times, must be authorised, and by authorised personnel only. Any violations, or even exceeding of powers must be punishable.

Asia

8Percent leverages power of platform (Korea Herald), Rated: A

Companies that have used the 8Percent platform include Korea’s leading vehicle-sharing app operator Socar, solar energy firm S-Power and restaurant chains Power Plant and The Booth.

For example, a P2P investor into Socar was given a 1-hour free-driving offer each month for a year, until the loan matured. The offer was part of a return to about 600 retail investors, who lent a combined 1.3 billion won ($1.19 million) to the car-sharing firm in July 2015.

Vouchers for restaurants, such as Power Plant and The Booth, were given as rewards to investors.

According to a December estimate by 8Percent, three-fourths of investors, who offered an accumulated 97.7 billion won in loans, were from metropolitan areas — either Seoul or Gyeonggi Province — while those in their 20s or 30s accounted for over three-fourths of investors. The investors, without tax being deducted, are offered on average 9.78 percent interest for investments.

Some 65 percent of its borrowers — about 5,000 – had a credit rating between 4 and 6 on the scale of 1 to 10.

Similarly, online REITs use online platforms and digital technology to enable wider access to REITs and quicker dissemination of REIT information. This allows mass participation and broader wealth distribution.

The ticket size to crowdfund a $1-billion airport is not exactly for everyone. However, a three-bedroom apartment in Mumbai, Manchester or Dubai Marina jointly owned by a hundred individuals sounds realistic. It also helps diversify risks for investors.

Smart Crowd is a crowdfunding platform, very different from an online REIT. The company believes it can enable anyone with Dh5,000 in savings to enter the Dubai property ladder. Its platform is awaiting final regulatory approval from the Dubai Financial Services.

MK Rachel Azaria threatens banks with P2P legislation (Globes.co.il), Rated: AAA

MK Rachel Azaria, chair of the Knesset Reforms Committee (officially known as the Special Committee on the Planning and Building Bill and the Maternity Leave and Parenting Bill) did not like the draft circular released by the Bank of Israel on regulating the relationship between the banks and the digital peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms on Sunday.

Azaria is now threatening to promote legislation that will regulate relations between the banks and the platforms, but this appears to be designed to pressure the Bank of Israel to publish new, more focused guidelines .

Marcus from Goldman Sachs Surpasses 2017 Goal (Bank Innovation), Rated: AAA

Martin Chavez, chief financial officer for Goldman Sachs, showed in a slideshow at a Bank of America Merrill Lynch event yesterday that Marcus had already surpassed $1.96 billion in originations as of Nov. 9.

What that means is that from Nov. 9 to Nov. 14, over a span of five days, Marcus originated more than $40 million in loans.

Rising challenges unlikely to deter U.S. securitization in 2018 (Asset Securitization Report), Rated: AAA

As a result, Fitch’s outlook for U.S. structured finance ratings is predominately stable for 2018. That said, given where we are in the credit cycle, Fitch is keeping a close watch on select asset types that could run into some issues over the next 12 months.

Entering 2018, Fitch has either Positive or Stable Outlook on over 90% of its rated securitized bonds.

Perhaps the most notable change that has manifested from risk retention is the shrinking universe of originators bringing new securitizations to market. This is particularly notable in the universe of CMBS originators, which has shrunk from a high of roughly 40 to now less than 20 due to a combination of risk retention and Reg A/B.

Competitive pressures, long in place for subprime autos, are escalating in a marketplace ABS environment that is struggling to find its footing by testing recent underwriting models, asset quality and, in some cases, business models. Delinquencies and chargeoffs of existing assets continue to increase as marginal borrowers increase their leverage. Not likely to help is the drive for growth among large marketplace lenders coupled with rising market pressure from competing banks like Goldman Sachs (Marcus), Discover, and Suntrust. And unless originators tighten their credit policies with discipline, the strain will intensify.

Online lenders should heed criticism of their effect on borrowers (American Banker), Rated: AAA

The consumer lending industry is abuzz about the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s recent report on debt consolidation and online lending. This excellent piece of research concludes that, on average, online installment loan borrowers fall into more debt after taking out a loan, experience hits to their credit score and history as a result, and take out online loans despite having access to traditional banking and credit channels.

The first two conclusions are damning, especially as these loans are often marketed as a way to help consumers consolidate credit card debt and improve their finances. At the end of the day, a lender’s duty is not merely to avoid losses. Any loan must be suitable for the customer — which means it should be made only if the lender believes it is improving the customer’s financial health. A lender not guided by that principle should be prepared for severe criticism as well as elevated losses down the road.

But it would be nonsensical to discredit or ignore the study because it includes online lenders beyond well-known fintech names.

The Best of Both Worlds with Prosper for Borrowers and Lenders (DoughRoller), Rated: AAA

Founded in 2005, and generally recognized as the first peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platform in the US, Prosper has funded more than $10 billion in loans since.

While borrowers can get personal loans ranging in size between $2,000 and $35,000, investors can put as little as $25 toward funding those loans.

There is one exception, however. You cannot use loan proceeds for post-secondary educational expenses. That’s because some of the rules in federal law aren’t compatible with P2P lending. More specifically, with education loans, the borrower must have at least 30 days to accept or reject a loan offer.

Medical procedures available for financing under the PHL program include:

  • Cosmetic dentistry
  • Bariatric surgery
  • Cosmetic and plastic surgery
  • Fertility and reproductive procedures

All Prosper loans have a term of either three or five years.

The minimum requirements are:

  • A minimum FICO score of 640, based on a TransUnion FICO 08 score
  • Debt-to-Income (DTI) ratio below 50%
  • Stated income greater than $0 (you must have an income)
  • No bankruptcies filed within the previous 12 months
  • Fewer than seven credit bureau inquiries within the last six months
  • A minimum of three open trades reported on your credit report

Interest rates are between a minimum of 3.00% for the best AA rated borrowers to a maximum of 36.00% for the lowest rated HR borrower grades.

Prosper for Investors

Prosper advertises that the average rate of return by investors on the platform is 7.41% per year.

Loans rated HR have a much higher average return, at 11.73%.

You can open either a General Investment Account or an IRA. Available IRAs include traditional, Roth, SIMPLE, SEP and rollover IRAs (IRA accounts are held with Millennium Trust Company). At this time, Prosper has made only individual accounts available. You cannot hold an account jointly with someone else.

For regular investment accounts, the minimum is $25. For IRA accounts, the minimum is $5,000.

Similar to other P2P platforms, when you invest with Prosper, you don’t actually invest in whole loans. Instead, you invest in small slivers of those loans, referred to as “notes.” The notes are in denominations of $25. This means that you can spread an investment of $1,000 across as many as 40 different loans.

The servicing fee is 1% of the outstanding balance of a loan. That means that if the loan pays 8%, your net return will be 7%.

Betterment, the investing startup with $ 11 billion in assets, is rolling out a new service to make charitable giving easier (Business Insider), Rated: A

Betterment, the New York-based roboadviser, announced Wednesday a charitable giving feature that’ll let users donate shares of their account to partnered charities.

The firm, which manages $11 billion for over 300,000 customers, partnered with 11 charities for Betterment Charitable Giving, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC, UNICEF, and World Wildlife Fund, according to a news release. The new feature is set to go live November 28.

Subprime car loans souring faster at nonbank lenders (American Banker), Rated: A

Despite signs of trouble in subprime auto lending, U.S. banks and credit unions are well positioned to ride out any market turbulence, a new report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York suggests.

More than $435 billion in auto loans to borrowers with credit scores below 660 were outstanding during the third quarter of this year, the report found. That total has been climbing steadily since bottoming out at $249 billion in early 2011. Delinquency rates have also been rising as it has become easier to qualify for an auto loan.

Fidelity latest financial firm to facilitate data sharing with fintechs (American Banker), Rated: A

Fidelity Investments is joining the ranks of financial firms sharing customer account data with others through an application programming interface.

The new service, called Fidelity Access, will give third parties access to Fidelity customers’ account data for use in apps and services like tax preparation, budgeting, financial planning, spending analysis and portfolio advice — provided the Fidelity customers give their OK. Customer data to be shared includes Fidelity account balances, securities holdings, and transactions.

And just to be clear, fintech startups are nowhere near close to catching up to the big banks. Wells Fargo & Co. has a market cap of more than $266 billion, and Bank of America Corp. has a market cap of more than $273 billion.

How to Choose Between a Peer-To-Peer Lending or Traditional Loan (Experian), Rated: A

Shopping for a loan at a P2P provider is a two-step process. First, based on a credit score (or credit scores) and your answers to a few basic questions—your full name, address, date of birth and annual income—the lender determines which loan offer(s) to extend to you. (It’s possible at this juncture that the lender will decide not to extend any loan offers; if they do, they’ll explain why.)

Once you choose the loan you want, the lender does a more detailed credit check and may ask you to verify your income and to provide additional background information.  Each P2P site has its own lending criteria, including minimum credit scores, and additional information requirements vary accordingly. Some P2P lenders want information on your educational background; others want work history or details about your financial assets. In most cases, you can submit the necessary documents electronically.

The first step in the P2P loan-approval process gets one or more of your credit scores by a method known as a soft inquiry—the same process you use when you check your own credit scores. Soft inquiries have no impact on your credit scores. However, the hard inquiries traditional lenders make when you apply for a credit cards or bank loans are reported to the national credit bureaus. They appear on your credit reports, and typically cause temporary credit-score drops of several points.

In the second step of P2P loan approval, the lender performs a hard inquiry to confirm your credit score and, likely, to review your full credit report.

Before you apply for a P2P loan

  • Take a look at the fine print on the bottom of each provider’s homepage, to get an overview of the loan amounts they offer and the rates and fees they charge.
  • Make sure the lender operates in your state.
  • Check your FICO Score and review your credit reports for any major negative entries. Accounts in collection, liens and civil judgments are among the items that could torpedo your loan application, even if you meet the credit-score requirements.
  • Determine the amount of money you need and watch out for tempting upsells.
  • Consider using the Experian loan-referral tool to explore offers from multiple P2P lenders (and possibly traditional lenders as well).

Despite public criticism about a lack of transparency in some practices, Ant Financial is doing things the right way, a senior executive at the company said Wednesday.

Beijing-based fintech company 9f Group has raised a massive new funding round from Cinda International Holding Ltd, a subsidiary of state-owned China Cinda Asset Management Co., Ltd., Focus Media Information Technology’s Chairman Jiang Nanchun, video game developer Youzu Interactive’s chairman Lin Qi and an unnamed Chinese industry fund.

The company did not disclose financial details except to say that it raised “hundreds of millions of U.S. dollars” in the latest financing deal, according to a company announcement. Santander’s Openbank has changed a great deal since it was founded as Spain’s first telephone banking service in 1995. Now a fully digital operation, its mobile app allows users to temporarily disarm a lost credit card, as well as to check whether fellow Openbank customers are buying or selling a given stock at any moment. Currently, it has some 1.2m customers in Spain and more than €8bn ($9.3bn) in assets under management.

In recent years, Spain’s two biggest banks — Santander and BBVA — have increased their financial and managerial investment in fintech, digital banking and big data. Like their peers, they are convinced that the days of branch-based lending are drawing to a close.

Spanish banks average about €15m assets under management per employee, says Daragh Quinn, banks analyst at investment bank Keefe, Bruyette & Woods. At a digital operator like Openbank, that number is close to €60m.

The digital push is on two fronts: first, a mobile app that allows customers to access almost all of the bank’s products without going into a branch. Second, a venture capital approach whereby banks invest in or partner with fintech start-ups to add products.

Due to this issue, the original incarnation of peer-to-peer lending has not lasted. As the CEO of Zopa, a UK-based P2P lender said,

Australia’s major peer-to-peer lender is SocietyOne. It currently has $350 million borrowed through its platform, and is growing rapidly. In fact, loan volumes in the first three quarters of this year have totalled $141 million so far, surpassing the $139 million in loans facilitated over the entire course of 2016, as shown below.

For years, banks have had a monopoly in lending money to businesses and individuals. However, the 2007-08 financial crisis created a havoc, rapidly-expanding the funding gap. This led to the advent of a niche fintech vertical, peer-to-peer (P2P) lending.

The geographical reach of a P2P lending platform is far superior, with the major differentiator being its online interface. Such digital financial services play an important role in supporting the objective of financial inclusion. Anybody, from the remotest areas, having access to internet, can be eligible to get/give a loan.

In the age of digitisation where almost everyone has access to internet, such platforms have the potential to change the financial graph of a country.

Are P2P platforms safe for lending and borrowing? (India Times), Rated: B

While banks and non-banking finance companies (NBFC) are the readily available sources for loans, who does the P2P platform cater to? “Unfortunately, banks in India follow mediocre credit assessment policies which are suited only for borrowers who can offer collateral or have an impeccable credit history. In practice, majority of the borrowers lie in between these extremes. Therefore, majority of Indians can borrow on P2P platforms,” says Raghavendra Pratap Singh, co-founder, i2ifunding, an online P2P lending marketplace.

RBI has put a cap on the amount that can be borrowed and lent. The aggregate exposure of a lender or the maximum that one may borrow at any point of time, across all P2Ps, shall be capped at Rs 10 lakh. Even the exposure of a single lender to the same borrower, across all P2Ps, shall not exceed Rs 50,000 and the maturity of the loans shall not exceed 36 months. “More clarity from RBI is expected on how the regulator intends to monitor the compliance of this aspect and how it will fix the responsibility,” says Singh.

Risks for a lender
Since this is an unsecured loan where there is no face-to-face interaction, a P2P lender needs to be aware of the risks involved. Bubna says, “All investments involve risk. However, in comparison to equity or commodity market investments or real estate, P2P lending has lower risk as it is addressed by on-boarding high quality borrowers. Further, lenders are suggested to create a diversified portfolio of loans.”

So far, we have disbursed more than $13 million, across more than 60,000 borrowers. The average ticket size of a loan now is around $300.

We charge a fee based on the profit sharing principle. Of the 22-30 percent annual interest rate paid by borrowers, we collect 11-13 percent for our revenue.

The Mauritian Financial Services Commission Issues Draft Peer-To-Peer lending Rules (Mondaq), Rated: AAA

Following the announcement of the Government on peer-to-peer lending and funding in the 2017-2018 Budget, the Mauritian Financial Services Commission (“Commission”) has issued draft rules on 10 November 2017 to regulate the peer-to-peer lending sector – as sector which has grown rapidly in other countries.

In the region, Kenya and Africa are leading in the peer-to-peer business lending market. According to a study conducted by the University of Cambridge, within Africa, South Africa had the largest number online alternative finance platforms, with $15 million raised in 2015 (The Africa and Middle East Alternative Finance Benchmarking Report, February, 2017).

Borrower and lender – a borrower must be a resident in Mauritius; however, there is no residency requirement for the lender.

Restrictions on amounts  Hence, a lender, who is a legal person, cannot lend more than MUR 500,000 (approx. GBP 11,000) in any 12 months’ period. A lender, who is a natural person, cannot lend an amount in excess of 10 per cent of his income or a maximum of MUR 300,000 (approx. GBP 6,600), whichever is lower, in any 12 months’ period.

Obligations of a P2P operator – the Peer-to-Peer operator must publish the following information on its website:

  • details of how the P2P lending will operate
  • measures to prevent money laundering and combatting terrorist financing
  • security measures to ensure data protection
  • dispute resolution mechanism.

This was always going to be a tall order given the intense competition from entrenched players and fintech startups alike, but now the SoFi brand has been tarnished as well.

“There are a lot of question marks,” says Alois Pirker, research director at advisory firm Aite Group. “The new CEO will need to find his or her bearings there and that will tell which direction they’ll be going.”

Some members of the board consider the moves into life insurance and wealth management Cagney “pet projects,” according to a person familiar with their thinking. Directors prefer to focus on more mature businesses such as personal loans and mortgages that are more predictable and established, said the person, who requested anonymity to discuss a private matter.

The firm reported revenue of $134 million in the second quarter, according to an email from Cagney to investors in August. It had adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $61.6 million and extended over $3.1 billion in student loans, personal loans and mortgages during that time frame. Personal loans are the most profitable, the person said, followed by student loans and then mortgages.

The wealth management unit had just $12 million in assets under management as of early September, according to a filing. This is far short of the more than $100 million the firm had set as an internal goal, people familiar with the matter have said.

Earnest, An Online Student Lender, Bought By Navient For $ 155 Million (Forbes), Rated: AAA

Financial technology start-up Earnest has agreed to be acquired by student loan servicing giant Navient for $155 million in cash, the companies said on Wednesday.

Earnest, an online lender that has focused on refinancing student loans, will remain a distinct brand and will continue to be led by its current management team, including founder and CEO Louis Beryl.

The acquisition will be a launching pad for Navient to begin originating its own student loans.

Outlining his firm’s strategy for battling digital disruption, Schwab CEO Walt Bettinger envisioned it would push client asset revenues lower, while relying on its brand and established market share to grow.

Reacting to his statement, industry observers expect an uphill slog for independents as the largest firms gear up for a price war on three fronts: financial advice, online trading and ETFs.

An early study by A.T. Kearney predicted incumbents would slash prices to compete with robo advice upstarts. While that never came to pass, the 2015 study still predicted industry revenues would drop by as much as $12 billion by 2020.

“[Schwab has] $3 trillion in client assets. They have very positive brand recognition and customer satisfaction scores that are the envy of most of the industry. They have demonstrated a willingness to cut price to gain market share, as seen with their recent commission cuts in online trading. So yes, they can throw their weight around.”

The wisdom of possessing a trifurcated digital advice offering — Schwab Intelligent Portfolios, a digital-only service, an institutional platform for RIAs, and the hybrid robo advisor Schwab Intelligent Advisory — also becomes clearer, McDermott notes. (Schwab’s robo now has $20 billion in AUM).

Robo advice is expected to collectively top $1 trillion in assets under management in fewer than five years, according to Boston-based consulting firm Aite Group. But micro-investing will partly feed such growth, it predicts, noting over 60% of millennials already are subscribed to such apps.

While Upstart’s No-Action Letter has narrow applicability, it may serve as a tool for other FinTech lenders in implementing innovative products and services and establishing relationships with banks.

According to Upstart, its underwriting technology uses traditional underwriting methodologies in combination with other variables that are correlated with financial capacity and “repayment propensity.” Upstart states that its model understands and quantifies risk associated with all borrowers—both those with credit histories and those without credit histories. As a result, the Upstart loan program is able to offer credit to segments of the population with limited credit or work histories at more favorable rates. In other words, it appears Upstart is underwriting consumer loans without reliance upon traditional criteria, such as credit scores and length of employment history.

  • The No-Action Letter is only applicable to Upstart’s automated model for underwriting applicants for unsecured non-revolving credit, as described in Upstart’s original Request.
  • The No-Action Letter will expire three (3) years after its issuance, at which time Upstart may seek to renew the No-Action Letter.
  • The No-Action Letter is subject to modification or revocation at any time at the discretion of the CFPB staff for any reason, including where the CFPB’s staff determines that such modification or revocation is appropriate to protect consumers or is otherwise in the public interest.

On one hand, a no-action letter may be particularly useful for a FinTech company, utilizing innovative technology and operations, to obtain guidance concerning the permissibility of its business model under specific regulatory constructs. A no-action letter may also be useful for a FinTech company seeking to establish joint ventures with banks.

On the other hand, a CFPB-issued No-Action Letter has narrow applicability as it is only applicable to the requesting applicant, a specific regulatory issue and the facts and circumstances identified by the applicant in its request submitted to the CFPB. Should a fact or circumstance fail to be conveyed accurately, or should a fact or circumstance change, the No-Action Letter may be rendered useless.

Online housing investment platform Roofstock raises $ 35M in Series C (The Real Deal), Rated: A

From Shopping to Close, LendingTree Study Finds Mortgage Process is Getting Faster (Business Insider), Rated: A

LendingTree, an online loan marketplace, has released the findings of its study on shopping timelines for purchase mortgages. The study analyzed data from a sampling of more than 5,000 closed loans from March 2016 through May 2017 and reviews the timeline for the entire mortgage shopping experience – from first submitting a loan request and being matched with a lender to the date of the mortgage loan closing. The study revealed that the median time from early rate shopping to closing on a purchase mortgage declined 7 days from 2016 to 2017.

From 2016 to 2017, LendingTree has seen a 19% increase in the number of loans closed within 30 days and a 27% increase in loans closed in 60 days.

Congress is Trying to Get the IRS to Modernize (Lend Academy), Rated: A

Back in December 2013 Renaud Laplanche testified on Capitol Hill on small business lending. He was CEO of Lending Club back then and when a Congressman asked Laplanche a question as to how the government can best help he said to make IRS data more easily accessible to online lenders.

Fast forward four years and there appears to finally be some movement on this. Last week Congressman Patrick McHenry (R-NC) along with Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced a billthat would help the IRS move into the modern age and allow the automated retrieval of tax information through an API.

The IRS Data Verification Modernization Act of 2017 as it is called will require the IRS to create an API that will allow lenders to verify income in real time.

App-only bank Atom nears £1 billion in deposits (Business Insider), Rated: AAA

Startup, app-only bank Atom has passed £900 million in deposits less than two years after launching its first savings product.

The disclosure comes as Atom’s annual accounts show that the startup had £538 million in deposits from over 17,000 customers at the end of March. It means the app-only bank has attracted around £400 million in four months.

The bank’s accounts, filed with Companies House this week, show Atom has received over £300 million of small business loan applications and lent out close to £100 million in loans and mortgages by March this year.

Atom had a net interest loss of £1 million for the year, due to paying out interest on its 1.95% and 2.5% fixed savings accounts, at the time market-leading interest rates, before the launch of its lending products.

P2P lending on course for 20 per cent jump (FT Adviser), Rated: A

Lending across all of the peer-to-peer platforms in 2017 to date is already higher than in the whole of 2016, according to data from research agency 4thWay.

According to the data, total lending across all peer-to-peer platforms is likely to be at least 20 per cent higher this year than last with the largest platforms, Funding Circle and Zopa, leading the way.

Funding Circle has lent £865m in 2017 to date, compared with £825m in the whole of 2016.

Another big player from Sweden is Klarna, founded in 2005 and now valued at $2.5 billion. With $521.44 million in funding from investors like Sequoia and Visa, Klarna is one of the most popular e-commerce payment solutions in Europe, used by Burberry, Overstock.com, J.Crew, Nike, Lenovo, and hundreds more.

Adlibris, one of Europe’s largest booksellers, used Klarna to improve its mobile checkout solution, resulting in an 80% conversion increase.

With a valuation just shy of its Swedish colleague Klarna, Netherlands-based Adyen (valued at $2.3 billion), has established a firm foothold in the world of merchant payments by providing a “friction-less payment experience”. Founded in 2006 and funded with $266 million to date, Adyen has some huge customers in its corner, including Netflix, Uber, Etsy, Spotify, Groupon, and LinkedIn. The secret is in its platform, which features support for a wide variety of payment options (250 worldwide, to be exact) in a single system, including Apple and Android Pay, all major credit cards, direct debit for recurring payments, in-app purchases, and much more. The Cambridge Satchel, a UK handbag company, saw its Black Friday sales rocket by 124% after switching to Adyen’s platform. In addition to one-time purchases, the platform also facilitates subscriptions and recurring payments more seamlessly.

New10 Partners With Mambu To Redefine Dutch SME Lending (Bob’s Guide), Rated: A

Mambu today announced that New10, ABN AMRO’s newly launched FinTech, has selected the SaaS engine to power a range of small and medium enterprise (SME) lending products in the Netherlands. New10, which aims to provide credit decisions within 15 minutes, went from concept to launch within 10 months, in line with ABN AMRO’s vision of digitisation and innovation.

Mambu took a collaborative approach working with the New10 team in order to complete implementation within four months. In a highly regulated environment, Mambu’s partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) which has received Dutch regulatory approval, helped smooth the path to market. New10 launched on 21 September 2017 with a fully digital SME lending platform with plans to broaden the portfolio and potentially expand into new markets.

BitProperty Announces Upcoming Token Sale, Beta Release of Real Estate Investment Platform (Bitcoinist), Rated: AAA

BitProperty, the blockchain-powered real estate investment platform, has announced that it will launch a closed beta release on October 5, 2017. Ten days later, on October 15, it will kick off a token sale to raise funds for further development of the platform.

The BitProperty platform is built on the Ethereum blockchain and uses two different types of tokens. The first type is an asset token that represents a share of a particular asset. When a real estate owner lists a property on the platform, the number of asset tokens issued against the property represents its value. Investors can purchase these asset tokens and will then receive income based on the performance of the asset (property) and the size of the stake that each investor holds.

The second type of token is the BTP token, which represents the inherent value of the platform backed by the pool of the company’s managed assets.

RBI issues directions for peer-to-peer lending platforms (India Times), Rated: AAA

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), on October 4, issued directions for non-banking financial companies (NBFC) that operate peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms. According to the directions, from now on no NBFC can start or carry on the business of a P2P lending platform without obtaining a Certificate of Registration. Every company seeking registration with the bank as an NBFC-P2P shall have a net owned funds of not less than Rs 20 million or such higher amount as the bank may specify.

They have been asked to apply for registration as NBFC-P2Ps within 3 months.

NOTIFICATIONS (Reserve Bank of India), Rated: AAA

3. Scope

These Directions provide a framework for the registration and operation of NBFC-P2Ps in India.

(2) Process of Registration

(i) Every existing and prospective NBFC-P2P shall make an application for registration to the Department of Non-Banking Regulation, Mumbai of the Bank, in the form which will be specified by the Bank for the purpose. Existing NBFC-P2Ps shall apply within three months from the issuance of these Directions.

(ii) The Bank, for the purpose of considering the application for registration, shall require the following conditions, among others, to be fulfilled:

  1. The company is incorporated in India;
  2. The company has the necessary technological, entrepreneurial and managerial resources to offer such services to the participants;
  3. The company has the adequate capital structure to undertake the business of Peer to Peer Lending Platform;
  4. The promoters and the Directors of the company are fit and proper;
  5. The general character of the management of the company is not prejudicial to the public interest;
  6. The company has submitted a plan for, or implemented, a robust and secure Information Technology system;
  7. The company has submitted a viable business plan for conducting the business of Peer to Peer Lending Platform;
  8. Public interest shall be served by the grant of CoR;

Any other condition as may be specified by the Bank, fulfillment of which, in the opinion of the Bank, is necessary to ensure that the commencement of or carrying on the business in India shall not be prejudicial to the public interest.

6. Scope of Activities

(1) An NBFC-P2P shall-

  1. act as an intermediary providing an online marketplace or platform to the participants involved in Peer to Peer lending;
  2. not raise deposits as defined by or under Section 45I(bb) of the Act or the Companies Act, 2013;
  3. not lend on its own;
  4. not provide or arrange any credit enhancement or credit guarantee;
  5. not facilitate or permit any secured lending linked to its platform; i.e. only clean loans will be permitted;
  6. not hold, on its own balance sheet, funds received from lenders for lending, or funds received from borrowers for servicing loans; or such funds as stipulated in paragraph 9;
  7. not cross sell any product except for loan specific insurance products;
  8. not permit international flow of funds;
  9. ensure adherence to legal requirements applicable to the participants as prescribed under relevant laws.
  10. store and process all data relating to its activities and participants on hardware located within India.

(2) Further, NBFC-P2P shall-

  1. undertake due diligence on the participants;
  2. undertake credit assessment and risk profiling of the borrowers and disclose the same to their prospective lenders;
  3. require prior and explicit consent of the participant to access its credit information;
  4. undertake documentation of loan agreements and other related documents;
  5. provide assistance in disbursement and repayments of loan amount;
  6. render services for recovery of loans originated on the platform.

(3) NBFC-P2P shall not undertake any activity other than those stated in paras 6(1) and 6(2) of these Directions. Deployment of investible funds by an NBFC-P2P in instruments specified by the Bank, not for trading, shall however be permitted.

11. Transparency and Disclosure Requirements

(1) An NBFC-P2P shall be required to disclose the following:

(i) to the lender

  1. details about the borrower/s including personal identity, required amount, interest rate sought and credit score as arrived by the NBFC-P2P.
  2. details about all the terms and conditions of the loan, including likely return, fees and taxes;

(ii) to the borrower – details about the lender/s including proposed amount, interest rate offered but excluding personal identity and contact details;

(iii) publicly disclose on its website:

  1. overview of credit assessment/score methodology and factors considered;
  2. disclosures on usage/protection of data;
  3. grievance redressal mechanism;
  4. portfolio performance including share of non-performing assets on a monthly basis and segregation by age; and
  5. its broad business model.

(2) NBFC-P2P shall ensure that the providing of services to a participant, who has applied for availing of such services, is backed by appropriate agreements between the participants and the NBFC-P2P. The agreements shall categorically specify all the terms and conditions among the borrower, the lender and the NBFC-P2P.

(3) The interest rates displayed on the platform shall be in Annualized Percentage Rate (APR) format.

The Reserve Bank of India will make prepaid payment instruments like e-wallets, gift cards and meal coupons interoperable for customers complying with the central bank’s know your customer guidelines.

Inter-operability among KYC compliant prepaid instruments will be implemented in six months after the RBI issues its revised norms within a week by October 11, the central bank said as part of its developmental and regulatory policies.

Hey all,

I wanted to share the news today that Aspire Financial Technologies will be officially shutting down this week.  Sadly, the search for a strategic partner we started in the summer wasn’t successful, and our funding has now run out.  As a result, we no longer have the resources to continue the build of our loan data and analytics infrastructure solutions.

I’ll be running a sale process of Aspire’s IP (Aspire Gateway and ALD Explorer solutions) over the next month or so, looking for a quick outcome.  Feel free to contact me to discuss.

Thanks to all that have supported Aspire over the past two years.  Despite the odds, we made it this far, with your help.  Unfortunately, expensive and complex build requirements, with long institutional sales cycles, combined with a lack of scalable professional seed-stage funding in Canada, have been our undoing.  Any one of these being different would likely have yielded a better outcome, but all three together have proved to be terminal.

Mark and I have had a great team to work with.  We thank them for all the hard work and long hours, and wish them well as they move on to their next challenges (and hopefully a bit more stability!).

For me personally, I’ve made and consumed a great deal of  “FinTech Kool-Aid” over the past two years, which has permanently altered by view of the future, and the role that technology will play in the delivery of financial services to consumers, small businesses and corporations going forward.  I’m excited to see this play out, and the role I can play in making it happen.

LendingClub Completes 2nd Self Sponsored Loan Securitization with $ 323 Million Deal (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: AAA

LendingClub (NYSE: LC) has sponsored and contributed to its second securitization deal following the the last successful self sponsored deal this past June. The “Consumer Loan Underlying Bond” (CLUB) Credit Trust 2017-P1 (CLUB 2017-P1) issued $323.1 million in prime notes backed by consumer loan assets originated via the LendingClub platform. This is the sixth securitization supported or sponsored by LendingClub, and the fourth rated securitization of LendingClub facilitated loans overall. LendingClub described the deal as further expanding investor access.

LendingClub reported the transaction was backed by approximately $350 million of collateral and includes $217.3 million of Class A notes rated “A-(sf)”, $51.0 million of Class B notes rated “BBB (sf)” and $54.7 million of Class C notes rated “BB (sf)”.

Risk Evaluation of Commercial PACE Securitizations Differs From Residential Deals (Morningstar), Rated: AAA

Morningstar Credit Ratings, LLC believes the next iteration of property assessed clean energy securitizations will be in the commercial sector. While securitization of residential PACE assessments tops $3 billion, there have been no public transactions consisting primarily of commercial liens.

Evaluating Property Income Generated to Pay Debts In analyzing the credit risk of transactions backed by commercial assessments, Morningstar considers the debt service coverage ratio, because PACE lending is tied to the property rather than the owner’s creditworthiness.

Morningstar evaluates a property’s net operating income in relation to its annual debt-service payments. Among securitized commercial mortgages, the average DSCR is approximately 2.14x, according to Morningstar. C-PACE lenders and aggregators typically require a minimum total DSCR in the 1.00x to 1.15x range. Although, in some cases, the DSCR has dipped below 1.00x, especially if total debtto-value is low when operating expenses are higher than revenue. Factors possibly mitigating a lower DSCR, which include county support, property ownership affiliations within a network, liquidity account and equity position require case-by-case analysis. In addition, DSCR of the lien is more important than the DSCR of the overall debt.

Evaluating Divergent Leverage Metrics

The lien-to-value ratio is another leverage metric that Morningstar analyzes. Although a PACE assessment raises a property’s lien-to-value ratio, the increased risk to the underlying mortgage is likely minimal, as the obligation is usually small in comparison to the mortgage.

It can be more challenging to calculate the lien-to-value ratio for C-PACE levies, because the properties can run the gamut from hotels, farmlands, nursing homes, and gas stations to nonprofit buildings such as churches. Across residential PACE deals, we have seen lien-to-value ratios around 6.7% and combined PACE-lien-plus-mortgage-tovalue ratios at around 62.7%. In C-PACE, lien-to-value ratios hover around 25.0%, not including mortgage debt.

While we scrutinize total debt-to-value, the distribution of leverage offers insight into the financial health of the property. For example, we view a property with a 90% debt-to-value ratio that is composed of an 89% mortgage loan and a 1% PACE assessment more favorably than a property whose debt is composed of an 89% PACE obligation and a 1% mortgage because of higher subordination levels.

Growing Market Size

C-PACE financing has grown to about $482 million as of Sept. 1, encompassing 1,097 commercial projects, according to PACENation. More than 2,500 municipalities have C-PACE programs.

Compared with residential programs, C-PACE is in its infancy, as R-PACE financing totaled about $3.67 billion and R-PACE securitizations totaled around $3.40 billion. A sliver of
commercial assets was included in one of those securitizations, GoodGreen 2016-1, with commercial PACE levies representing approximately 4.8% of the pool’s assets.

The Top Sources Of Small Business Financing Based On Approval Rates (Forbes), Rated: AAA

According to the latest Biz2Credit Small Business Lending Index, the monthly analysis of more than 1,000 small business loan applications on Biz2Credit.com. Loan approval percentages of institutional investors have continuously reached new heights this year in terms of approval rates. In August Institutional lenders’ loan approval rates in August reached 63.9%.

Alternative lenders’ approval percentages continue to decline; in August the rate dipped to 57.1%. Approval percentages have dropped every month for more than a year.

Approval percentages at small banks rose one-tenth of a percent in August to 49.0% from July’s 48.9% figure. It is conceivable that the number may cross the 50% benchmark.

Big banks improved one-tenth of a percent to 24.6% in August, setting a new high for the Biz2Credit Index, which has tracked loan approvals since January 2011. The number is creeping up to one-in-four. It’s a good time for bank lending.

Loan approval rates at credit unions dipped to 40.3% in August, falling to a new low for this category of lenders on Biz2Credit’s index.

ID-verification firms seize on Equifax moment (American Banker), Rated: A

The Equifax hack, combined with the rise of online lending, may have turned 2017 into a golden age for companies with new ideas for ID.

The software company Mitek plans to roll out a product in the coming year called Mobile Verify for Lending, which offers lenders a five-step process to quickly verify customer identities. Borrowers first share their online bank account information with lenders. They then submit four pictures taken from their smartphones: the front and back of their driver’s licenses, a selfie and a pay stub.

Other players are offering digital lending solutions to make it easier for banks to keep pace with speedy fintech competitors. Upstart, for example, is marketing software, called Powered by Upstart, to banks wanting to get into digital lending.

DFS to Court: OCC Fintech Charter ‘Undermines’ Its Authority (New York Law Journal), Rated: A

The U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s plan to offer a special-purpose bank charter for financial technology companies “undermines” the Department of Financial Services’ regulatory authority in New York, the state agency argued in court documents.

“The Fintech Charter Decision is an unlawful assertion of power that usurps New York consumer protection laws and would preempt plaintiff’s ability to regulate any number of the over 600 nondepository institutions she currently regulates,” wrote Matthew Levine, the executive deputy superintendent for enforcement at the department.

The average order value for Affirm customers is 70 percent higher than the sitewide average, Kopitz said. And about half of those using the service with Shinola are 18-34 years old, the release said.

Is marketplace lending maturing? (Banking Exchange), Rated: A

As new as fintech and marketplace lending—once known as “peer to peer lending”—may still seem, Noreika suggested that the online lending fraternity may be moving toward maturity.

Noreika said the sweat that went into those ideas has hit $40 billion in consumer and small business credit, with volumes doubling every year since 2010. He noted that some project that at that rate, marketplace lending will hit $1 trillion by 2025—versus the $3.7 trillion in unsecured consumer lending as of yearend 2016.

  • Revenue rose 59% to £50.9 million;

  • Losses dipped by 3% to £35.7 million thanks partly to a foreign exchange boost;

While Desai is bullish on international expansion, the accounts show Funding Circle stopped operations in Spain at the start of the year, a market it entered through the acquisition of Zencap in 2015.

International revenues grew slower than UK revenues last year and Funding Circle parted ways with the head of its continental Europe operations in the middle of last year.

In the UK, economic growth is slowing and consumer debt is ballooning, leading to fears of a possible economic slowdown that could hit lenders.

It is expecting NAV returns in H2 2017 to average 0.4 per cent-0.5 per cent per month (c.5-6 per cent pa), and then recover to 0.6 per cent-0.7 per cent per month (c.7 per cent-9 per cent pa) in 2018, assuming the resolution of Princeton this year.

As a result aggregate dividends of c.25p are expected for H2 2017, compared to 46p in H1.

Onfido, an identity verification startup, has raised the “Series C” fundraising from Crane Venture Partners, Microsoft Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures, as well as existing investors. It takes the total raised by the London startup to over $60 million.

Payday lender Wonga records £65m loss amid overhaul (BBC), Rated: A

Wonga – Britain’s biggest payday lender – posted pre-tax losses of nearly £65m in 2016, but claims its business has been “transformed”.

How Fintech Is Disrupting Traditional Banking Models (Minute Hack), Rated: A

One of the biggest changes in the financial sector in the UK has been the introduction of challenger banks.

Crucially, these banks have not been mired by the many recent scandals and still rely on customer deposits to build their balance sheets. That’s why fledgling banks such as Metro Bank, Aldermore, Tesco Bank and United Bank UK and currently dominating the best buy tables.

More Chinese fintech firms to eye Hong Kong IPOs, says JP Morgan (SCMP), Rated: AAA

More Chinese fintech firms vying to go public could choose Hong Kong as their listing venue, after the city’s first fintech IPO received a hot response from investors, and that Hong Kong has unique advantages compared with other global financial hubs, said JP Morgan’s head of global investment banking in China.

Zhong An Online Property and Casualty Insurance, China’s first online-only insurer, closed nine per cent up from its IPO price on Thursday in its Hong Kong debut. With an oversubscription of nearly 400 times from retail investors, the company had priced its IPO at the top end of the expected range, raising US$1.5 billion in the city’s biggest ever fintech offering.

“The next Zhong An could show up in online payment, P2P lending, [financial] product distribution, or online insurance.”

In particular, revenue from online payment is estimated to increase to 202 billion yuan by 2020. Revenue from online distribution of financial products could grow to 52 billion yuan by then, while that for online lending and online insurance may reach 142 billion yuan and 60 billion yuan respectively.

ZhongAn Insurance Starts Trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (Lend Academy), Rated: AAA

ZhongAn’s IPO will likely make the company the 4th most valuable fintech company in the world with a market cap of about US$10.4 billion, following the top three fintechs, which are Paypal ($78bn), Ant Financial ($68bn) and Lufax ($18bn).

Peter Renton interviewed the CEO of ZhongAn Insurance, Jeffrey Chen, on the Lend Academy Podcast over the summer. Jeffrey said in the interview that ZhongAn has 492 million insurance customers as of December 31, 2016. That is more than four times that of insurance giant AXA’s customer base (107 million, as of December 31, 2016). By this measure, ZhongAn truly is the world’s largest insurance company. And this is just a four-year old company!

Why ZhongAn is So Succesful

For the technology part, ZhongAn has been using artificial intelligence and big data analytics in each step of the insurance value chain, from marketing, underwriting, pricing to claims processing.

Another example is that ZhongAn has partnered with a Chinese automaker to develop internet of things (IoTs) and telematics solutions. Telematics devices can capture drivers’ behavioral data, which can be fed to algorithms using big data techniques to tailor product pricing to observed risk levels.

In ZhongAn’s early days, the revenue generated by shipping return policies accounted for almost 90% of the total revenue. This product would not have been such a success were it not for its partnership with Alibaba. Ant Financial, the financial affiliate of Alibaba, is also the single biggest shareholder (16.04%) of ZhongAn.

Robo.Cash Tops €2 million with 1000th Investor (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: AAA

Emerging peer to peer lender Robo.Cashhas topped €2 million in loans with the advent of the 1000th investor.  According to Robo.Cash, investors are spread across most of Europe with lenders now coming from 28 different countries. The short term loans are coming from Spain and Kazakhstan.

The total sum of earned interests has amounted to more than €50,000 since the start of the platform’s work.

The End of Fintech Is Nigh (FiNews), Rated: AAA

Switzerland is one of the major global fintech centers and the industry is booming: Swisscom counted fewer than a hundred fintech startups in 2015, today there are 208 companies active in wealth management, comparative consulting, crypto finance, data management, payment services and lending (see illustration below).

Blurred Dividing Line

And this may also spell the end of fintech as we know it, in Switzerland, and abroad. That’s at least what Armands Broks (pictured below) believes. The founder and CEO of Twino, a peer-to-peer lending platform, thinks that the fine line between finance industry and fintech is about to be blurred and that fintech eventually will disappear.

The only way forward for fintech is through cooperation agreements and in doing so, «the fintech industry is signing its own death sentence,» Broks said.

Goldman Sachs’ foray into consumer banking is getting aggressive (Tearsheet), Rated: AAA

The same year it launched GS Bank, it began building a digital-only consumer loan product, Marcus, that was fully developed and on the market 12 months later. Without having the legacy infrastructure under previously existing consumer products and services, the overhaul other major banks have been experiencing don’t exist for Goldman.

“[The] platform approach has not been an obvious approach on Wall Street. Our competitors are generally structured in deep vertical silos and we have a different architecture: these shallower silos built on top of many layers of software, tech infrastructure, cybersecurity, enterprise platforms and increasingly, client platforms,” Marty Chavez, an engineer and Goldman Sachs CIO-turned-CFO this year, said in a keynote at Harvard University earlier this year.

46 percent of Goldman jobs are in technology 
CB Insights analyzed more than 2,000 open Goldman Sachs job listings by division and business unit to confirm it’s focused on building its technology and digital finance units.

Many of the jobs are in digital finance. Earlier this month it reportedly poached 20 employees from New York-based online lending startup Bond Street — engineers, product developers, and risk and marketing specialists — presumably to build out a lending product.

According to the research, published Tuesday, 46 percent of all of the firm’s jobs as of Sept. 14 are in technology, with the highest amount for core platform roles, followed by operations engineering and then equities technology.

Marcus is expanding in the U.K.

Marcus, the online lending startup built inside the investment bank, has been growing tremendously in the eight months since it launched in October 2016. It has one product: a customizable personal loan for Prime borrowers, with at least a 660 credit score, of up to $30,000. It promises no fees and straightforward repayment terms. It recently passed $1 billion in loan originations with expectations to originate $2 billion by the end of this year. By comparison: SoFi, which launched in 2011, reached its first billion after 14 months; Avant, founded in 2012, took 28 months; 10-year-old Lending Club took 65 months; and Prosper, launched in 2006, passed $1 billion in 98 months.

Robo-advisers, or automated services based on computer algorithms, are catching on in the Indian market due to the relatively lower penetration of financial products in India compared to developed markets.

According to a Business Insider Intelligence forecast, robo-advisers (with some element of automation) will manage investment products worth $1 trillion by 2020, which will go up to $4.6 trillion by as early as 2022.

Scepticism notwithstanding, financial institutions in the country are realising the benefits of robo-advisory services by either building the product in-house or partnering with fintech companies to develop robo-advisers. Take the case of FundsIndia.com, which has a robo-advisory service for which it is forging partnerships with financial biggies. “We have a partnership with Axis Securities and one more company. There is a growing acceptance from the industry, and we are trying to enable better product design,” said Srikant Meenakshi, co-founder, FundsIndia.com. According to him, 15% of his company’s overall portfolio comprises robo-advisory services. Similarly, 5nance has an agreement with HDFC Mutual Fund for its robo-advisor.

Singapore Cryptocurrency Firms Facing Bank Account Closures (Bloomberg), Rated: AAA

Singapore banks have closed accounts of several companies which specialize in providing cryptocurrency and payments services, according to two local bodies which represent financial-technology firms.

Chia Hock Lai, president of the Singapore Fintech Association, which has broader membership than Access, said some of his organization’s members also experienced account closures, though he didn’t provide figures.

Access has 106 members and the Fintech Association has 185, though the two organizations said some companies belong to both groups.

How technology drives a new Taiwanese banking landscape (The Asset), Rated: A

According to Joseph Huang, president of E.Sun Bank, speaking in an interview with The Asset, payments is one area that every bank is looking to explore, although it does not generate huge profits for most banks.

Banks are also more frequently working with technology companies. E.Sun Bank partnered with IBM Taiwan in building its digital branch, which opened in February 2017, making it the first digital branch in Taiwan. Similarly, CTBC partnered with LINE Pay to help merge its banking services with communication apps and social media.

Taishin Bank’s e-banking application, Richart, which attracted over 120,000 subscribers, is targeting young Taiwanese users, while Cathay United Bank is also providing its products to retail customers through its platform My MobiBank.

LendingClub (NYSE: LC) has sponsored and contributed to its second securitization deal following the the last successful self sponsored deal this past June. The “Consumer Loan Underlying Bond” (CLUB) Credit Trust 2017-P1 (CLUB 2017-P1) issued $323.1 million in prime notes backed by consumer loan assets originated via the LendingClub platform. This is the sixth securitization supported or sponsored by LendingClub, and the fourth rated securitization of LendingClub facilitated loans overall. LendingClub described the deal as further expanding investor access.

LendingClub reported the transaction was backed by approximately $350 million of collateral and includes $217.3 million of Class A notes rated “A-(sf)”, $51.0 million of Class B notes rated “BBB (sf)” and $54.7 million of Class C notes rated “BB (sf)”.

Risk Evaluation of Commercial PACE Securitizations Differs From Residential Deals (Morningstar), Rated: AAA

Morningstar Credit Ratings, LLC believes the next iteration of property assessed clean energy securitizations will be in the commercial sector. While securitization of residential PACE assessments tops $3 billion, there have been no public transactions consisting primarily of commercial liens.

Evaluating Property Income Generated to Pay Debts In analyzing the credit risk of transactions backed by commercial assessments, Morningstar considers the debt service coverage ratio, because PACE lending is tied to the property rather than the owner’s creditworthiness.

Morningstar evaluates a property’s net operating income in relation to its annual debt-service payments. Among securitized commercial mortgages, the average DSCR is approximately 2.14x, according to Morningstar. C-PACE lenders and aggregators typically require a minimum total DSCR in the 1.00x to 1.15x range. Although, in some cases, the DSCR has dipped below 1.00x, especially if total debtto-value is low when operating expenses are higher than revenue. Factors possibly mitigating a lower DSCR, which include county support, property ownership affiliations within a network, liquidity account and equity position require case-by-case analysis. In addition, DSCR of the lien is more important than the DSCR of the overall debt.

Evaluating Divergent Leverage Metrics

The lien-to-value ratio is another leverage metric that Morningstar analyzes. Although a PACE assessment raises a property’s lien-to-value ratio, the increased risk to the underlying mortgage is likely minimal, as the obligation is usually small in comparison to the mortgage.

It can be more challenging to calculate the lien-to-value ratio for C-PACE levies, because the properties can run the gamut from hotels, farmlands, nursing homes, and gas stations to nonprofit buildings such as churches. Across residential PACE deals, we have seen lien-to-value ratios around 6.7% and combined PACE-lien-plus-mortgage-tovalue ratios at around 62.7%. In C-PACE, lien-to-value ratios hover around 25.0%, not including mortgage debt.

While we scrutinize total debt-to-value, the distribution of leverage offers insight into the financial health of the property. For example, we view a property with a 90% debt-to-value ratio that is composed of an 89% mortgage loan and a 1% PACE assessment more favorably than a property whose debt is composed of an 89% PACE obligation and a 1% mortgage because of higher subordination levels.

Growing Market Size

C-PACE financing has grown to about $482 million as of Sept. 1, encompassing 1,097 commercial projects, according to PACENation. More than 2,500 municipalities have C-PACE programs.

Compared with residential programs, C-PACE is in its infancy, as R-PACE financing totaled about $3.67 billion and R-PACE securitizations totaled around $3.40 billion. A sliver of
commercial assets was included in one of those securitizations, GoodGreen 2016-1, with commercial PACE levies representing approximately 4.8% of the pool’s assets.

The Top Sources Of Small Business Financing Based On Approval Rates (Forbes), Rated: AAA

According to the latest Biz2Credit Small Business Lending Index, the monthly analysis of more than 1,000 small business loan applications on Biz2Credit.com. Loan approval percentages of institutional investors have continuously reached new heights this year in terms of approval rates. In August Institutional lenders’ loan approval rates in August reached 63.9%.

Alternative lenders’ approval percentages continue to decline; in August the rate dipped to 57.1%. Approval percentages have dropped every month for more than a year.

Approval percentages at small banks rose one-tenth of a percent in August to 49.0% from July’s 48.9% figure. It is conceivable that the number may cross the 50% benchmark.

Big banks improved one-tenth of a percent to 24.6% in August, setting a new high for the Biz2Credit Index, which has tracked loan approvals since January 2011. The number is creeping up to one-in-four. It’s a good time for bank lending.

Loan approval rates at credit unions dipped to 40.3% in August, falling to a new low for this category of lenders on Biz2Credit’s index.

DFS to Court: OCC Fintech Charter ‘Undermines’ Its Authority (New York Law Journal), Rated: A

Crucially, these banks have not been mired by the many recent scandals and still rely on customer deposits to build their balance sheets. That’s why fledgling banks such as Metro Bank, Aldermore, Tesco Bank and United Bank UK and currently dominating the best buy tables.

Retail banking is the area that has seen the biggest change as a result of the FinTech sector, but that’s not to say there hasn’t also been a significant impact in the commercial banking sector.

A perfect example is Barclay’s mobile payments service Pingit, designed to compete with Apple Pay, while other banks have launched new mobile banking businesses away from their legacy businesses in an attempt to compete in a digital age.

Bringing financial services to small businesses

One example is peer-to-peer lending, a sector that has sprung up from nothing ten years ago to lend a total of £2.9bn in 2016. This is now filling the capital void for many growing businesses and lending at lower rates than many firms would be able to access elsewhere.

More Chinese fintech firms to eye Hong Kong IPOs, says JP Morgan (SCMP), Rated: AAA

More Chinese fintech firms vying to go public could choose Hong Kong as their listing venue, after the city’s first fintech IPO received a hot response from investors, and that Hong Kong has unique advantages compared with other global financial hubs, said JP Morgan’s head of global investment banking in China.

Zhong An Online Property and Casualty Insurance, China’s first online-only insurer, closed nine per cent up from its IPO price on Thursday in its Hong Kong debut. With an oversubscription of nearly 400 times from retail investors, the company had priced its IPO at the top end of the expected range, raising US$1.5 billion in the city’s biggest ever fintech offering.

“The next Zhong An could show up in online payment, P2P lending, [financial] product distribution, or online insurance.”

In particular, revenue from online payment is estimated to increase to 202 billion yuan by 2020. Revenue from online distribution of financial products could grow to 52 billion yuan by then, while that for online lending and online insurance may reach 142 billion yuan and 60 billion yuan respectively.

ZhongAn Insurance Starts Trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (Lend Academy), Rated: AAA

ZhongAn’s IPO will likely make the company the 4th most valuable fintech company in the world with a market cap of about US$10.4 billion, following the top three fintechs, which are Paypal ($78bn), Ant Financial ($68bn) and Lufax ($18bn).

Peter Renton interviewed the CEO of ZhongAn Insurance, Jeffrey Chen, on the Lend Academy Podcast over the summer. Jeffrey said in the interview that ZhongAn has 492 million insurance customers as of December 31, 2016. That is more than four times that of insurance giant AXA’s customer base (107 million, as of December 31, 2016). By this measure, ZhongAn truly is the world’s largest insurance company. And this is just a four-year old company!

Why ZhongAn is So Succesful

For the technology part, ZhongAn has been using artificial intelligence and big data analytics in each step of the insurance value chain, from marketing, underwriting, pricing to claims processing.

Another example is that ZhongAn has partnered with a Chinese automaker to develop internet of things (IoTs) and telematics solutions. Telematics devices can capture drivers’ behavioral data, which can be fed to algorithms using big data techniques to tailor product pricing to observed risk levels.

In ZhongAn’s early days, the revenue generated by shipping return policies accounted for almost 90% of the total revenue. This product would not have been such a success were it not for its partnership with Alibaba. Ant Financial, the financial affiliate of Alibaba, is also the single biggest shareholder (16.04%) of ZhongAn.

Emerging peer to peer lender Robo.Cashhas topped €2 million in loans with the advent of the 1000th investor.  According to Robo.Cash, investors are spread across most of Europe with lenders now coming from 28 different countries. The short term loans are coming from Spain and Kazakhstan.

The total sum of earned interests has amounted to more than €50,000 since the start of the platform’s work.

The End of Fintech Is Nigh (FiNews), Rated: AAA

Switzerland is one of the major global fintech centers and the industry is booming: Swisscom counted fewer than a hundred fintech startups in 2015, today there are 208 companies active in wealth management, comparative consulting, crypto finance, data management, payment services and lending (see illustration below).

And this may also spell the end of fintech as we know it, in Switzerland, and abroad. That’s at least what Armands Broks (pictured below) believes. The founder and CEO of Twino, a peer-to-peer lending platform, thinks that the fine line between finance industry and fintech is about to be blurred and that fintech eventually will disappear.

The only way forward for fintech is through cooperation agreements and in doing so, «the fintech industry is signing its own death sentence,» Broks said.

PWC consultants said that about 60 percent of Swiss banks have links to fintechs. Four out of five banks are eyeing partnerships in the near future or are planning to expand existing ones.

Goldman Sachs’ foray into consumer banking is getting aggressive (Tearsheet), Rated: AAA

The same year it launched GS Bank, it began building a digital-only consumer loan product, Marcus, that was fully developed and on the market 12 months later. Without having the legacy infrastructure under previously existing consumer products and services, the overhaul other major banks have been experiencing don’t exist for Goldman.

“[The] platform approach has not been an obvious approach on Wall Street. Our competitors are generally structured in deep vertical silos and we have a different architecture: these shallower silos built on top of many layers of software, tech infrastructure, cybersecurity, enterprise platforms and increasingly, client platforms,” Marty Chavez, an engineer and Goldman Sachs CIO-turned-CFO this year, said in a keynote at Harvard University earlier this year.

46 percent of Goldman jobs are in technology 
CB Insights analyzed more than 2,000 open Goldman Sachs job listings by division and business unit to confirm it’s focused on building its technology and digital finance units.

Many of the jobs are in digital finance. Earlier this month it reportedly poached 20 employees from New York-based online lending startup Bond Street — engineers, product developers, and risk and marketing specialists — presumably to build out a lending product.

According to the research, published Tuesday, 46 percent of all of the firm’s jobs as of Sept. 14 are in technology, with the highest amount for core platform roles, followed by operations engineering and then equities technology.

Marcus is expanding in the U.K.

Marcus, the online lending startup built inside the investment bank, has been growing tremendously in the eight months since it launched in October 2016. It has one product: a customizable personal loan for Prime borrowers, with at least a 660 credit score, of up to $30,000. It promises no fees and straightforward repayment terms. It recently passed $1 billion in loan originations with expectations to originate $2 billion by the end of this year. By comparison: SoFi, which launched in 2011, reached its first billion after 14 months; Avant, founded in 2012, took 28 months; 10-year-old Lending Club took 65 months; and Prosper, launched in 2006, passed $1 billion in 98 months.

HNWs Would Use Amazon for Wealth Management (Financial Advisor IQ), Rated: A

The majority of high net investors would turn to GoogleAppleFacebook and Amazon for wealth management, Bloomberg writes.

If one of the four tech giants were to enter the advice space, 56.2% of wealthy individuals would entrust them with their money, according to a Capgemini survey of 2,500 individuals with a net worth of $1 million or more in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific cited by the news service. And among people under 40, more than 81% would use one of the four tech firms, according to the survey.

Indians are warming up to robo-advisers (livemint), Rated: A

Robo-advisers, or automated services based on computer algorithms, are catching on in the Indian market due to the relatively lower penetration of financial products in India compared to developed markets.

According to a Business Insider Intelligence forecast, robo-advisers (with some element of automation) will manage investment products worth $1 trillion by 2020, which will go up to $4.6 trillion by as early as 2022.

Scepticism notwithstanding, financial institutions in the country are realising the benefits of robo-advisory services by either building the product in-house or partnering with fintech companies to develop robo-advisers. Take the case of FundsIndia.com, which has a robo-advisory service for which it is forging partnerships with financial biggies. “We have a partnership with Axis Securities and one more company. There is a growing acceptance from the industry, and we are trying to enable better product design,” said Srikant Meenakshi, co-founder, FundsIndia.com. According to him, 15% of his company’s overall portfolio comprises robo-advisory services. Similarly, 5nance has an agreement with HDFC Mutual Fund for its robo-advisor.

Robo-advisory start-up ArthaYantra uses a patented methodology called the Personal Financial Lifecycle Management on its online platform, Arthos. Since its launch in 2008, the site claims to have helped 120,000 customers across more 650 cities and 30 countries.

Singapore Cryptocurrency Firms Facing Bank Account Closures (Bloomberg), Rated: AAA

Singapore banks have closed accounts of several companies which specialize in providing cryptocurrency and payments services, according to two local bodies which represent financial-technology firms.

Chia Hock Lai, president of the Singapore Fintech Association, which has broader membership than Access, said some of his organization’s members also experienced account closures, though he didn’t provide figures.

Access has 106 members and the Fintech Association has 185, though the two organizations said some companies belong to both groups.

How technology drives a new Taiwanese banking landscape (The Asset), Rated: A

According to Joseph Huang, president of E.Sun Bank, speaking in an interview with The Asset, payments is one area that every bank is looking to explore, although it does not generate huge profits for most banks.

Banks are also more frequently working with technology companies. E.Sun Bank partnered with IBM Taiwan in building its digital branch, which opened in February 2017, making it the first digital branch in Taiwan. Similarly, CTBC partnered with LINE Pay to help merge its banking services with communication apps and social media.

Taishin Bank’s e-banking application, Richart, which attracted over 120,000 subscribers, is targeting young Taiwanese users, while Cathay United Bank is also providing its products to retail customers through its platform My MobiBank.
