Lending Earnings Insights (2018 Q3) (PeerIQ) Rated: AAA

We remain in the late stages of the credit cycle. The US consumer has benefitted from record low unemployment, rising incomes and home prices, and a lower tax rate. The supply of credit and competition to offer loans is increasing. Lenders are optimistic about consumer spending and debt levels, and are reserving for potentially higher losses in the future.

We see divergent credit performance across FinTech asset classes. Enova (Subprime) and OnDeck (Small Biz) are seeing near cycle-low charge-offs, while LendingClub (Prime) is seeing higher delinquencies on newer vintages. LendingClub also increased its charge-off estimates across loan grades by ~40 bps QoQ.

Card issuers are increasing loan loss reserves at a higher rate than loan growth, indicating expectations of higher losses going forward. Loan loss provisions are increasing at roughly twice the rate of loan growth across card issuers, but overall reserve levels are still low.

Funding Circle has announced plans to become the first of Britain’s new generation of financial technology companies to go public, in a deal expected to raise £300m and value the peer-to-peer lender at more than £1.5bn.

The initial public offering of Britain’s biggest peer-to-peer lender will provide a significant test of investor appetite for the breed of fintechs that have sprung up in the past decade to challenge high-street banks.  Funding Circle has arranged £5bn of loans to small companies in the UK, the US, Germany and the Netherlands since its launch in 2010 by connecting businesses looking to borrow money with retail and institutional investors willing to lend them money. 

However, the company’s prospective value of more than £1.5bn is above the current value of US-listed peers OnDeck and Lending Club, which have both suffered tumbling share prices since their lPOs.

Funding Circle IPO will be open to platform’s existing investors (Peer2Peer Finance) Rated: A

FUNDING Circle has said it expects its existing investors will be able to become shareholders in the company after it goes public.

Funding Circle said that its initial public offering (IPO), if it goes ahead, would aim to raise around £300m, with at least 25 per cent of the company’s issued share capital to be placed on a free float.

In a blog post on its website, also on Monday, the P2P lender said that its customers would have the opportunity to apply to participate in the IPO and become a shareholder in Funding Circle via an intermediaries offer.

Given that Funding Circle’s flotation comes just days after the collapse of that other trailblazing fintech, Wonga, it’s hard not to compare the two.

Both were launched to fill the gaps in the lending market where traditional banks feared to tread. Both used tech wizardry to check they were lending to the right people at the right price. Both brilliantly deployed digital technology to make their services simple and fast to use.

Hopefully, for future investors, the similarities end there.

FUNDING Circle is to host a panel event focusing on cryptocurrency, described by the organisers as “one of the most interesting but least understood areas of fintech.”

The event is being held in connection with FinTechWomen, a London-based meet-up group, and is sponsored by Funding Circle.

UK sub-prime lenders shrug off political cloud (Nasdaq), Rated: AAA

UK sub-prime investors are shrugging off Wonga’s cloud. Customer complaints and a regulatory clampdown forced the payday lender to stop making loans. The likes of Amigo Holdings and Non-Standard Finance have different models, and regulators’ blessing. Yet, with Wonga out of the picture, they too risk becoming the focus of public ire.

Investors love it. Amigo’s return on equity will be around 40 percent this year, using Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, while it and Non-Standard Finance should grow revenue on average by more than 20 percent each year up to 2021, analysts reckon. NSF, which has a more diversified business including unguaranteed loans, is valued at over 17 times forward earnings. Amigo’s shares were priced at 12 times forward earnings even after a selloff promoted by disappointing results on Thursday. The consumer finance sector on average trades at less than 11 times forward earnings, according to Eikon.

Hedge fund Kreos Capital is first in line for Wonga payout deal after lending the collapsed payday loan company around £34m (This is Money) Rated: A

A Mayfair hedge fund is at the front of the queue to be paid by collapsed Wonga as fears grow that thousands of its hard-up customers will get nothing.

Kreos Capital lent Wonga about £34million two years ago and is understood to be still owed around £10million by the payday loan company.

Under the arrangement, it is thought to be in line to collect that sum ahead of other creditors.

P2P lenders record £300m intake in second year of the IFISA (P2P Finance News), Rated: AAA

ALMOST £300m was invested across Innovative Finance ISAs (IFISA) in the previous tax year, HMRC data reveals.

The latest ISA statistics from the taxman shows £290m of subscriptions in IFISA for the 2017/2018 tax year across 31,000 accounts.

P2P lenders saved £9,355 on average.

Zopa revealed it received more than £150m in its IFISA during the previous tax year.

The data shows that savers subscribed to 10.8 million Isa accounts during the 2017-18 tax year, down from 11.1 million in the previous tax year. This represents a fall of 10%.

P2P marketing clampdown ‘may restrict IFISA takeup’ (P2P Finance News), Rated: A

Stuart Law, who heads up the business P2P lender, warned that the strong take-up of the IFISA could be hampered by the FCA’s proposed marketing restrictions for the sector.

Under the proposed changes, platforms would be restricted to marketing to those who are certified as sophisticated or high-net-worth investors or those that certify that they will not invest more than 10 per cent of their net portfolio in P2P agreements.

Northern Irish housebuilder secures £250,000 from P2P platform (Development Finance Today), Rated: A

County Down Developments has received a £250,000 facility from Blend Network for the development of four luxury apartments in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

The loan from Blend Network came after the housebuilder was turned down for a loan by Barclays.

Mattress start-up Casper offered credit in UK without permission (Financial Times), Rated: B

A US online mattress start-up backed by rapper 50 Cent has been forced to stop offering credit to UK customers, after it emerged it had been doing so without permission from the regulator.

Casper, a five-year-old company that is on a major European expansion drive, was allowing UK customers to buy on credit from Swedish bank Klarna.

The company shifted its headquarters to Hong Kong from Melbourne earlier this month as it prepares to submit a virtual banking license application, along with partners, ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Airwallex co-founder and chief executive Jack Zhang said the company will team up with a traditional bank and other local partners as part of the application process, although he declined to reveal their identities.

The analyst suggested robo-adviser may be ahead of their time, given high net-worth demand for robo-advice is on the rise among the next generation of investors.

“While robo-advice is here to stay, it will take time to cement itself. The digitally-savvy next generation will embrace an automated service and big banks should capitalize on this. However, a big brand is not enough to justify much higher fees,” Woldemichael said.

Collapse of UK payday lender Wonga sounds warning for Aussie fintech vigilance (Australian Financial Review) Rated:AAA

The collapse of Wonga, one of Britain’s most high-profile fintech lenders, provides salient lessons for Australia, which considers the UK a template for financial technology policy and where tighter laws to protect vulnerable customers from payday lenders appear to have stalled.

Wonga, built around a slick app allowing customers to get expensive loans via their mobile phone, was “notorious for its extortionate interest rates and was a toxic symbol of Britain’s household debt crisis”, said The Guardian last week.

The payday lender “failed because it was too greedy and at times crossed the ethical line”, it said, quoting prominent UK financial columnist Martin Lewis, who described Wonga’s loans as “the crack cocaine of debt – unneeded, unwanted, unhelpful, destructive and addictive”.

China’s FinUp, existing investors back digital lending startup SlicePay (VC Circle) Rated: AAA

SlicePay, a digital lending platform which caters to college students and young professionals, has raised an undisclosed amount in an extended Series A round of funding led by Chinese firm FinUp Finance Technology Group.

The company said in a statement that existing investors Blume Ventures, Japan’s Das Capital, and Russia’s Simile Ventures had also participated in the round.

A person close to the development who did not wish to be named pegged the deal at $14.9 million (around Rs 105 crore at current exchange rates).

Southeast Asia’s startups suffer from Series B funding crunch, says Kredivo’s Gar (Deal Street Asia), Rated: AAA

Having recently raised what is estimated to be the largest Series B funding round for a fintech firm in Southeast Asia, Indonesia-focused lending platform Kredivo says the process was far from smooth sailing.

The company was forced to look beyond the region to raise the majority of its fund, as it found that there were simply very few investors in the region that specialized in doing Series B investments.

Tel Aviv Climbs on List of Top 10 Undergraduate Programs for Entrepreneurs (CTech) Rated: B

Tel Aviv University is among the top ten global undergraduate programs in terms of producing venture capital-backed entrepreneurs, according to a report published last week by Seattle-based market research company Pitchbook. Pitchbook ranked Tel Aviv in eighth place, up from ninth last year, above Yale, Princeton, and Brown.

Two other Israeli universities made the top 50 list: the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology came in at 14, while the Hebrew University of Jerusalem placed at 35.

Credit Card Usage at All-Time Highs, But Delinquency Rates Still Remain in Check (Global Newswire) Rated: AAA

TransUnion’s report found that serious credit card delinquency rates per borrower (90+ DPD) increased in Q1 2018 to 1.78%, up from 1.69% in Q1 2017. The delinquency rate is now level with the 1.77% mark observed six years prior in Q1 2012, though it remains below the 10-year first quarter average of 1.91%. The average card debt per borrower also followed a similar path as delinquencies during the last year, rising 2.63% to $5,472 in Q1 2018 from $5,332 in Q1 2017.

The number of credit card accounts rose 2.6% in the last year to 416.5 million in Q1 2018, up from 405.8 million in Q1 2017. In that same timeframe, the number of consumers with access to a credit card also increased by 2.1% to 174.9 million from 171.4 million one year ago.

The latest origination data point to a modest 1% growth rate between Q4 2017 and Q4 2016.

How banking is open to innovation (Global Banking and Finance Review) Rated: A

Open Banking, which is the sister regulation of the EU’s PSD2 legislation, is off to a slow start – but that is to be expected. We’re only at the start of a revolution which will unleash an incredible range of innovative financial services and products, and profoundly change the financial and tech industry. The evolution and success of P2P lending can be gauged from the fact that the market had an exponential growth in 2015, having a value of $26.16 billion. It grew to almost $50 billion in 2016-17. The market is estimated to be worth $897.85 billion by the year 2024, and by 2025, the value is anticipated to reach $1 trillion. The alt-lending market is predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 48.2% between 2016 and 2024.

The Middle East and Israel

In 2015, a total of $158.8 million were raised in the online alternative fund market of Middle East. Equity-based crowdfunding dominated the market followed by reward-based crowdfunding and peer-to-peer business lending. Israel is the market leader as far as regional markets are concerned, which, from 2013-2015, accounted for between 75%-80% of total market activity while UAE, Qatar, Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine accounted for the remaining activity.

The Israeli fintech industry is relatively nascent, but the country has an advantage of human capital across various fields. Given Israel’s innovative and well- managed financial sector, it is the market leader in the Middle East as far as alternative lending is concerned. In 2017, transaction value in the Israeli marketplace lending segment amounts to US$88 million.

P2P lenders in Israel

  • Blender – Founded by Gal Aviv in 2014, Blender is an online P2P lending platform that provides multi-continental and cross-border lending services in developing, emerging, and western-world countries. It has been established with a view to providing a quick, flexible, and hassle-free credit solution as compared to the expensive loans given by banks and credit card companies. To date, it has raised $5 million in various rounds of funding. As per the company’s claims, within eight months of its launch, it provided loans amounting to NIS10 million (1 NIS=0.29 USD) with an average loan amount of NIS15000 – 20000. The average annual interest rate is 6%.
  • Tarya – Tarya is one of the largest Israeli P2P lending platforms and was started in 2014 by Eyal Elhayany. It has designed a digital platform where people can lend directly to other people, thus avoiding any middleman. The company’s rate of interest for borrowers ranges from 3.5%-8.0% depending upon the borrower’s credit score. Loan origination fees range between 0.9% – 5.5% and depend on both the credit rank and loan term. Lenders pay a fee of 1.0% on returns whereas lenders investing in diversified and micro-financed portfolios averaged between 5%-6% returns after fees. It has raised $2.6 million in funds since its inception.
  • eloan – eloan.co.il is a peer-to-peer lending platform founded in 2012 by Yigal Alkaslasy and Yoram Gavish. It allows private individuals to receive loans of up to NIS 47,500 for a period of up to five years. Each lender is entitled to lend up to NIS 1,000. Almost 84 Million NIS (approx $25 Million) has been financed by an estimated 4000 investors for over 4200 borrowers.

Regulatory reforms

Until recently, P2P lending platforms were not governed or supervised by any regulatory body in Israel. Due to no regulatory oversight, these platforms were able to scale their models. But the absence of regulatory supervision always concerns investors about the delinquencies and overall safety of funds on such platforms. This led Knesset, the unicameral national legislature of Israel, to pass laws regulating the activities of P2P platforms.

The new amendment imposes a licensing obligation on operators of P2P lending platforms and subjects the platforms to supervision by the Supervisor of Regulated Financial Services. The P2P lending segment will also be divided into two licensing categories: A basic license for a limited volume of activity, and an expanded license for a material volume of activity.

Within the scope of the law, and in order to also enable small businesses to obtain loans being offered via P2P lending platforms, the Securities Law was also amended so that companies can seek and obtain a loan of up to NIS 1 million through P2P platforms provided they are not deemed reporting corporations.

A platform licensee constitutes an operating entity that must perform particular actions vis-à-vis borrowers and for the lenders in the system, such as debt collection. With the objectives of ensuring proper management and protection of the lenders’ funds being transferred, the amendment clarifies that a licensee will be required to manage a trust account for the funds of lenders and borrowers being transferred to it. A platform licensee will be allowed to charge commissions from both lenders and borrowers for the service it is providing, out of the funds being managed in the trust account.

The Supervisor is authorized to issue various instructions to platforms relating to their ability to offer loans, considering the potential conflict of interests that might arise between the licensee and the lenders. The Supervisor is also authorized to prescribe rules in relation to various operational concerns.

With the objective of providing optimal environmental conditions for growth to P2P lending platforms, the banks and the credit companies owned by them are prohibited from entering the P2P lending segment for three years after the inception date of the law.

Conclusion

Although the Israeli alternative lending market is in its nascent stage, the country’s tradition of investing in and fostering innovation and technology will certainly make it an important market in the region. The new laws help in pushing the $318 billion dollar economy in to the future of lending.

Why JPMorgan, Amex, HSBC are backing ‘isolation’ web browsing (American Banker), Rated: AAA

Often users are tricked by phishing emails that mimic a legitimate note from the boss or a senior corporate leader. And the links and sites can look secure. According to PhishLabs, nearly 25% of all phishing sites in the third quarter were hosted on HTTPS domains — almost double the rate of the previous quarter.

As part of their effort to deflect these attacks, some banks are turning to isolated browsing, or remote browsing, technology. Such systems force all internet activity to happen in a protected space on the cloud, preventing malicious code from reaching a company’s network. The technology is not brand new, but it is starting to gain traction as some large banks have finished their testing of it and are going public with their use of it.

JPMorgan Chase, American Express and HSBC announced Monday that they are leading a $40 million round of funding in the isolation-tech provider Menlo Security, bringing its total funding to $85 million.

The bank will today announce it has become a direct member of the single euro payments area (Sepa), which allows credit transfers, direct debit and card payments in euros across the whole of the EU.

Jeff Lynn is on a mission to save capitalism from itself at a time when millions feel locked out, and unable to foresee themselves better off than their parents. His answer: to democratise capital.

That is one reason he founded Seedrs, an online platform through which individual investors can buy shares in high-growth companies at an early stage — a privilege once reserved for institutions and private equity funds. The other reason was to make money.

Seedrs, which along with Crowdcube dominates the UK market, has funded more than 540 deals, representing £280m of investment. Some were follow-on rounds, and in total about 400 companies have been funded. About 20-30 companies are live on the site at any time.

Crowdfunding by numbers

Critics say a big difference between crowdfunding and the stock market is liquidity — you cannot just sell your stake. But Seedrs has begun a secondary market and says it has had several exits already.

Free Agent, a Scottish maker of accounting software, floated in November 2016 at 87p. Its shares remain below the 100p Seedrs investors paid, though some sold when it hit 140p this year. Chapel Down, a vineyard, was already quoted on the Nex exchange (formerly ISDX) when it raised money at 28p a share in October 2014. It has been trading around three times that level.

For many years, if someone wanted a loan, they would have to apply for one through a bank. Before they received that loan, the bank investigated their credit and decided what the rate of interest would be applicable.

However, there is another way to get a loan without worrying about a low credit score or high interest rates. This is peer-to-peer lending or P2P. Through peer-to-peer lending platforms, individuals can invest their money in other individuals, with an interest rate that the two groups have agreed is fair.

Finnish crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending platform Fellow Finance announced on Tuesday it received payment institution authorization from the Financial Supervisory Authority of Finland. The online lender claims it is the first funding platform to receive this type of authorization, which will notably enable Fellow Finance to provide new services to its consumer and corporate customers, to expand its services further in Europe and to utilize the new payment service directive (PSD2) in the development of Fellow Finance service.

With Norrsken House, ex-Klarna executive envisions a global network of co-working spaces focused on impact (TechCrunch), Rated: A

He launched the Norrsken Foundation later that year with about $20 million of his own money. By early 2017, the first fruits of that funding took shape with the opening of Norrsken House, a co-working space in Adalberth’s hometown of Stockholm dedicated to companies that are developing technologies that have a social impact.

Now, Adalberth has committed an additional $62 million of his own money to expand that vision. The goal, he said, is to eventually create a network of 25 impact-focused co-working spaces and foundation hubs around the globe in the next 10 years. The first Norrsken House has 112 companies in it and seven have received direct investment from the Norrsken Foundation’s fund (more on that in a bit).

ID Finance raises $ 8.5m via exchange-traded bonds to support growth (Finextra), Rated: AAA

ID Finance, the emerging markets fintech company, today announced successful completion of its first issuance of exchange-traded bonds.

The company raised $8.5m from the bond registered in Russia and listed on the Moscow Exchange. It was the first tranche of a $170m bond issuance programme that the company plans to support global expansion.
The bond, which was oversubscribed, has a maturity period of three years and a quarterly coupon payment frequency.

Banks, fintechs and a Brit royal to build green-lending blockchain (American Banker), Rated: A

Could fintech help the planet cope with climate change?

Some major players — Prince Charles; bankers from Barclays, Standard Chartered, and BNP Paribas; three fintechs; and professors from the University of Cambridge — all hope the answer is yes.

On Tuesday at the One Planet Summit in Paris, they are expected to announce they are developing blockchain technology that lets banks see which potential borrowers use environmentally sustainable practices and therefore are worthy of preferential lending terms. Such disclosures presumably would put pressure on companies to pollute less.

RateSetter’s Australian business hits $ 200m milestone (AltFi), Rated: AAA

RateSetter Australia has hit the AUD$200m mark in lending a little over three years removed from launching down under. The platform, which lends to both businesses and individuals, has doubled its lending volumes over the past six months.

Interestingly, 56 per cent of its investors withdrew money from bank savings accounts in order to divert them into the platform, while a further 17 per cent reallocated money from bank term deposits. The greatest proportion of the platform’s investors are millennials, at 58 per cent, although they invest the least amount of money on average of any age group at $9,454. Retirees (aged 65 and over) by contrast invest an average of $66,118.

Consider also the case of Sitesearch in the US, where the company bought payday loan applications and sold them to third parties, which included fraudsters, who used the data to steal more than $25 million from user accounts. Such careless buying and selling off of data should not be justifiable in the name of consent. While safeguards such as requiring that companies transfer data to only to companies with a comparable level of privacy provisions help, these must be backed up by huge penalties for violations.

For example, consider the Equifax data breach, the breach of a credit information company, leading to the loss of crucial data of over 143 million Americans. This breach was the result of a vulnerability in their web application software, a vulnerability that was discovered and for which a patch had been issued at least 2 months before the actual hack. The breach of this crucial data was thus the result of negligent, or non-implementation of the patch.

A landmark privacy judgment in India is the Canara Bank case, which struck down a provision in a law, which allowed the authorisation of ‘anyone’ to conduct investigations and demand the production and seizure of documents, including bank documents. Such a wide delegation of powers can allow any and everyone, even unscrupulous actors, permission to gain access to confidential data, which should not be allowed.

This case draws attention to an important aspect of data protection — it must be ensured that investigations, at all times, must be authorised, and by authorised personnel only. Any violations, or even exceeding of powers must be punishable.

8Percent leverages power of platform (Korea Herald), Rated: A

Companies that have used the 8Percent platform include Korea’s leading vehicle-sharing app operator Socar, solar energy firm S-Power and restaurant chains Power Plant and The Booth.

For example, a P2P investor into Socar was given a 1-hour free-driving offer each month for a year, until the loan matured. The offer was part of a return to about 600 retail investors, who lent a combined 1.3 billion won ($1.19 million) to the car-sharing firm in July 2015.

Vouchers for restaurants, such as Power Plant and The Booth, were given as rewards to investors.

According to a December estimate by 8Percent, three-fourths of investors, who offered an accumulated 97.7 billion won in loans, were from metropolitan areas — either Seoul or Gyeonggi Province — while those in their 20s or 30s accounted for over three-fourths of investors. The investors, without tax being deducted, are offered on average 9.78 percent interest for investments.

Some 65 percent of its borrowers — about 5,000 – had a credit rating between 4 and 6 on the scale of 1 to 10.

The ticket size to crowdfund a $1-billion airport is not exactly for everyone. However, a three-bedroom apartment in Mumbai, Manchester or Dubai Marina jointly owned by a hundred individuals sounds realistic. It also helps diversify risks for investors.

Smart Crowd is a crowdfunding platform, very different from an online REIT. The company believes it can enable anyone with Dh5,000 in savings to enter the Dubai property ladder. Its platform is awaiting final regulatory approval from the Dubai Financial Services.

MK Rachel Azaria threatens banks with P2P legislation (Globes.co.il), Rated: AAA

MK Rachel Azaria, chair of the Knesset Reforms Committee (officially known as the Special Committee on the Planning and Building Bill and the Maternity Leave and Parenting Bill) did not like the draft circular released by the Bank of Israel on regulating the relationship between the banks and the digital peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms on Sunday.

Azaria is now threatening to promote legislation that will regulate relations between the banks and the platforms, but this appears to be designed to pressure the Bank of Israel to publish new, more focused guidelines .

SoftBank invests in US online lender to small business (Financial Times), Rated: AAA

SoftBank is investing $250m in Kabbage, one of the biggest US online lenders to small businesses, in a deal that could provide the firepower for a potential takeover of OnDeck Capital, a rival digital lender.

Kathryn Petralia, co-founder of Kabbage, told the Financial Times that the deal would finance growth in the company’s direct lending operation, which has provided nearly $3.5bn of funding to more than 100,000 small businesses in the US.

There has been speculation that Kabbage is planning to make a bid for OnDeck, a rival online lender that went public in 2014 and has since suffered an 80 per cent fall in its share price, hit by growing losses, rising defaults and higher funding costs.

SoFi Hints at IPO, Reports Record Results (WSJ), Rated: AAA

Social Finance Inc. posted record earnings and loan volume in the second quarter, as the privately held company’s chief executive hinted that it is moving closer to an initial public offering.

In a letter to investors reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, SoFi Chief Executive Mike Cagney sounded more optimistic about a potential public offering, as opposed to previous forums in which he said no deal would be coming in the foreseeable future.

Goldman Sachs is Going Big on Lending (Lend Academy), Rated: AAA

The firm created GS Select to reach clients of nearly 4,000 independent investment advisors from Fidelity Investments. Clients will be able to borrow from $75,000 to $25 million backed by their investment portfolios.

What’s interesting about this move is that it could be expanded to other RIAs and financial advisors not just through Fidelity. We’ve seen this type of model before with self described “Lending as a Service” fintech companies, but this time it’s a big bank that has built this technology.

USAA lets members bare their financial souls to Alexa (American Banker), Rated: A

USAA went live Wednesday morning with a virtual assistant that works with Amazon’s Alexa voice interaction device and its corresponding shopping app. Now, USAA members — at least the first 400 that sign up at USAA Labs — can ask Alexa a range of questions about their accounts, balances, spending and transactions, and the bot will answer with specific details from the member’s USAA card and bank accounts.

In so doing, USAA is joining a small group of financial institutions — including Capital One, American Express and several credit unions — that have created Alexa Skills, as the chatbots that work with Alexa are called.

US CFTC Launches Initiatives to Promote Fintech in the Futures and Swaps Markets (Lexology), Rated: A

First, the CFTC announced Project KISS—“Keep It Simple, Stupid”—as a forum to examine how its existing rules might be applied in less costly and burdensome ways. Second, the CFTC launched LabCFTC as a way to promote responsible fintech and regulatory technology (“regtech”) innovation. Together, these initiatives appear to be a significant part of the CFTC’s response to calls for streamlined regulation from the industry, the White House and some members of Congress.

Many D.C.-area homeowners are guilty of this financial no-no — financing renovations on credit cards (The Washington Post), Rated: A

A May study by Hearth, a financial technology start-up that provides support for homeowners making renovation decisions, found that 12 percent of Americans planned to finance their renovation with a credit card, which is one of the most expensive ways to finance the cost.

The Hearth Home Renovation Survey, which asked 2,000 homeowners about their remodeling plans for the coming year, found the number of people planning to use a credit card to pay for their renovation is even higher in the Washington region at 16 percent.

In this region, 52 percent of homeowners prefer to pay with savings or cash, compared with 62 percent nationally. D.C.-area residents are also more likely to finance their project with a loan — 32 percent — compared with 26 percent nationally.

Computer says no: robo-advice is growing but we still don’t trust it (The Conversation), Rated: B

People are open to receiving financial advice from robots, our studiesshow, but there might be a way to go to in convincing people to trust them over a human.

We surveyed 138 people about their attitudes to, and preferences for, superannuation advice from a human or a computer. Unsurprisingly, most stated they would prefer to deal with a human across a broad range of financial decisions.

Some did prefer the computer – these tended to be younger people, and those on higher incomes.

According to the online lender, 94% of its lenders are individuals looking for a decent return on their money by investing, and accepting some degree of risk, rather than settling for the pitiful interest rates offered on bank deposits.

P2P business platform MarketInvoice marks record trading day (AltFi), Rated: AAA

The company had more invoice advances on 1 August than any other day.

The trading platform saw £4.1m  in invoice advances to UK businesses on Monday, a record setting day for the firm.

Usually £3.2m is the average amount that is advanced in a day. The increase in trading is largely do to MarketInvoice Pro, an invoice discounting facility.

RateSetter-backed lender acquired by Non-Standard Finance (P2P Finance News), Rated: AAA

RATESETTER investors are likely to get repaid early by George Banco following the acquisition of the guarantor loans provider by Non-Standard Finance.

Blend Network will offer asset-backed property loans to retail and high-net-worth individuals, as well as hedge funds and other institutional investors. P2P specialist F&P will act as introducer for all of its loans, although Blend Network’s chief executive Yann Murciano said that he would be open to further partnerships in the future, as the business scales up.

P2P lending looks less than attractive on a forward-looking basis (AltFi), Rated: A

But, and yes, there is an important caveat, I am beginning to sense an important tipping point. Returns of between 4 and 6% pa from the big platforms – with an emphasis on the lower range of that spectrum – haven’t changed too much (in fact they’ve slightly fallen back). But I’m increasingly thinking that these returns are now inadequate for the potential of increased risk.

If one comes from a lending POV (point of view) then I would argue that the current returns are woefully inadequate, given where we are in the lending cycle.

  • The big banks are starting to increase their provisioning for bad debts
  • Here in the UK we’ve probably reached Peak Unsecured Lending with the BoE bearing down on all lenders about risk, worried senseless about a downturn in consumer spending as Brexit grinds on
  • The car lending market is quite clearly close to a systemic meltdown
  • ‘challenges’ are already appearing within the P2P space, most recently at Ratesetter where its wholesale lending capacity is being wound down
  • The housing market looks more vulnerable than ever before, with the very real possibility that we’ll see a steady drip feed of small price declines

Yirendai Made $ 40M Net Profits in Q2 and Dividend for the First Time (Xing Ping She), Rated: AAA

Yirendai, the first US-listed Chinese internet finance company, has recently issued its financial report for the Q2, 2017. In the second quarter of 2017, Yirendai has reached the loans volume of $1.22bn, increasing by 18 percent from the last quarter, especially increased 80 percent from the same period in 2016. By the end of second quarter, the accumulated loans transaction of Yirendai was up to $7.1bn.

Yirendai’s main revenue was charged for service fee from borrowers and lenders. As a result, its income scale is increasing rapidly with the fast growth of loans volume. In the period, Yirendai has made net income of $176 million, increasing by 16 percent from the last quarter and 61 percent from the same period of last year.

ID Finance Teams Up With Da Vinci Capital to Launch $ 200 Million Fintech Fund (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: AAA

Marketing fintech firm ID Finance announced on Wednesday it has joined forces with former Elbrus Capital fund manager, Yuri Popov, and asset management Da Vinci Capital to launch FinTech Credit Fund, which is described as a $200 million debt finance fund aimed towards fintech companies with a focus in alternative lending.

ID Finance also reported that the Fund will initially focus on projects within the CIS and European markets. Funding will be provided to companies involved in consumer/SME lending, with balance sheet and marketplace lenders being eligible.  Projects offering analytical solutions for credit scoring based on Big Data, AI and machine learning, as well as SaaS and PaaS solutions and payment services are of particular interest to the Fund and align with the investors’ areas of expertise.

GIC to invest in US talent agency (Straits Times), Rated: A

Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC, along with Canada’s largest pension fund manager, will invest US$1 billion (S$1.4 billion) in American talent management agency WME-IMG.

Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, in a separate statement, said it would invest about US$400 million for an 8 per cent stake in WME-IMG, which owns brands like Ultimate Fighting Championship and the Miss Universe Organisation.

The US firm also counts the SoftBank Group, Silver Lake Partners and Fidelity Investments among its investors. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Harmoney’s loss is really a gain (AltFi), Rated: AAA

New Zealand peer-to-peer lender Harmoney’s revenue climbed 63 percent this year, edging the company closer to profitability.  While still loss-making, Harmoney has halved its losses from $NZ14 million last year to $7 million this year.

As well as climbing revenue, its financials were helped by a 15 percent drop in marketing costs, suggesting the company has grown out its brand recognition to a point where it feels comfortable paying less for advertising.

To date, Harmoney has lent more money than any other Kiwi P2P platform.

A new whitepaper by CoreData and HUB24 titled ‘The modern face of advice’, argues that while technological tools were reshaping the wealth management industry, the role of advisers remained critical and the relationship they built with their clients remained more relevant than ever.

The paper, which is based on interviews with advisers, said technology used in advice practices continued to mature and costs, including platform fees and management expense ratios were decreasing to boost bottom line results of firms.

Robo-advice could play a role in tapping into the estimated $2 trillion worth of unadvised savings in Australia but awareness was still in its infancy. However, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC’s) ‘RG255: Providing digital financial product advice to retail clients’suggested robo-advice was here to stay.

RealX, a pune-based fintech start-up, has completed India’s “first fractional ownership” deal in real estate sector. The platform has bought a commercial property in Karad (Maharashtra) by pooling in investments from about 19 investors, RealX officials claimed.

RealX is an ecommerce platform which will allow property sellers and agents post their saleable property. Registered buyers, on the other side of the platform, could invest in these projects. The minimum investment threshold, currently, is Rs 5 lakh per investor.

Immediate payments key driver of banking revenue (The Asset), Rated: AAA

Sixty-six percent of banks with live IP systems in place see it as a revenue driver for their institution, which compares to less than 50% for companies without IP systems in place. Moreover, for all banks 53% say that IP will drive revenue growth for their organization, 61% believe that IP will enhance their level of customer service and 60% expect IP to reduce costs.

While 65% of surveyed institutions stated that open APIs would benefit their customer-facing proposition banks differed in their implementation strategy. The majority (55%) of banks opted for immediately creating open APIs and interfaces for developers, while a minority (45%) took a ‘wait and see’ approach.

IEG Holdings Highlights the Urgency of LendingClub Correcting its Flawed, Slim Margin “Broker” Business Model and Weak Underwriting Standards (Sys-Con), Rated: AAA

IEG Holdings yesterday announced the commencement of a tender offer to exchange four shares of IEG Holdings’ common stock for each share of LendingClub common stock, up to an aggregate of 40,345,603 shares of LendingClub common stock, representing approximately 9.99% of LendingClub’s outstanding shares as of April 28, 2017, validly tendered and not properly withdrawn in the offer.

IEG Holdings Corporation (OTCQB: IEGH) (“IEG Holdings”) cautions shareholders of LendingClub Corporation (“LendingClub”) against dismissing IEG Holdings’ tender offer. IEG Holdings believes that the LendingClub board of directors should be held accountable by its shareholders for continuing to pursue a flawed, slim margin “broker” business model. IEG Holdings urges LendingClub to enter into negotiations with IEG Holdings, rather than simply dismissing the tender offer.

FLAWED, SLIM MARGIN, LOSS-MAKING BUSINESS MODEL

Despite brokering more than $26 billion of loans since inception, LendingClub still reported a loss of $29.8 million for Q1 2017 and loss of $146.0 million for the 2016 full year. Transitioning to a balance sheet lender likely would significantly increase gross margins, without a significant change in customer acquisition costs.

WEAK UNDERWRITING STANDARDS

A recent media report by Bloomberg indicates that:

  • LendingClub only verified income about a third of the time for one of the most popular loans it made in 2016, and
  • If LendingClub finds errors in a loan application, it may still approve the loan.

LACK OF COMPANY-OWNED STATE LENDING LICENSES

LendingClub doesn’t hold individual state lending licenses and instead utilizes the services of a Utah-based bank. This raises regulatory risks around issues such as the potential breaking of individual state interest rate caps and compliance.

POOR STOCK MARKET PERFORMANCE AND ZERO DIVIDENDS TO SHAREHOLDERS

LendingClub’s share price has decreased 79% since its initial public offering in December 2014, dropping from $25.74 in December 2014 to $5.39 yesterday, after reaching a low of $3.51 in May 2016. In addition, LendingClub has never paid, and has no reported intention to pay, a dividend to shareholders.

IEG Holdings’ Reasons for the Offer

IEG Holdings believes that changing LendingClub’s business model to a balance sheet lender model would enable the company to generate significantly higher gross margins, provide significantly higher long duration cash flow from customers, build increased customer goodwill with customers and enable increased customer refinancing. The longer duration cash flow would provide more flexibility in reducing lending volumes during periods when underwriting risk levels are rising, as the company would be less dependent on brokering new loan deals every day to provide revenue.

  • IEG Holdings intends to encourage LendingClub to undertake substantial costs cuts by terminating excess employees, achieving substantial cuts in advertising/marketing costs and other significant cost cutting measures;
  • IEG Holdings intends to encourage LendingClub to transform its broker business model with low gross margins and high volumes to focus on high gross margin unsecured loans to near prime clients with strong underwriting, company owned individual state licenses and retention of loans on its balance sheet to secure long duration cash flow from longer term loans; and
  • The acquisition of LendingClub shares would be substantially net asset per share accretive for IEG Holdings stockholders and substantially increase shareholder equity.

New partnership turns PayPal into Apple App Store payment option (Banking Tech), Rated: A

Finicity and JP Morgan Chase pair for data share (Banking Tech), Rated: A

Data aggregation provider Finicity has signed an agreement with JP Morgan Chase to let the bank’s customers choose data to share with apps.

The companies will use a direct API to allow Chase customers to share information with the apps and services that Finicity supports. According to the firms, this tokenised access will eliminate the need for customers to share their Chase credentials with third-party apps.

Paypal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL): Beginning of Market Dominance (Library for Smart Investors), Rated: A

Paypal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) is getting investors attention after the stock touched fresh highs amid a new partnership with Apple.

The stock is up over 43% since the start of the year.

In the first quarter, PayPal saw a jump of 10.3% in monthly active users on year-over-year basis. The total number of transactions also increased by 22.5% in the period.

Wells Fargo trims auto loans as market cools, risk overhaul kicks in (Reuters), Rated: A

Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) is scaling back and remolding its auto lending business in response to growing stress in the market, as well as a bank-wide push for more centralized risk controls.

Wells, which was the No. 2 U.S. provider of auto loans less than a year ago, has already cut quarterly originations by nearly 30 percent over the nine months leading into March 31, according to a May 11 company presentation. It has also begun consolidating the collections operation in a move that people familiar with the business say could eliminate hundreds of jobs, after a new head of auto finance took the reins in April.

Ledger might be able to help out there: this San Francisco-based startup allows users to “open tabs with friends,” boiling down a transaction to just 3 clicks. By connecting with a user’s financial accounts (protected by “military-grade” cybersecurity, according to the company), users are able to aggregate all of their transactions in one place, as well as receive notification about when transactions are due.

More and more companies are striving to solve the main problem when it comes to personal finance management services: how do you make a user actually take the financial advice that is being offered?

Wallio starts off the week by giving a user an allocated amount of money they can spend for that week, on whatever the user wants (expenses and savings are already factored into this amount). If a user underspends, great: Wallio will allow that user to put that money towards a goal. If a user overspends, Wallio will simply allocate less money for the user to spend next week.

Trend: Passive products continue to gain assets.

This is the trend shaping the investment management industry today. Asset flows to passive products, both traditional index mutual funds and exchange-traded funds, began in earnest following disappointing active-fund performance during the financial crisis.

Trend: New ways to hire–and pay for–financial advice. 

Robo-advisors provide automated advice for a low annual fee as low as 0.25% or even less. Meanwhile, mutual fund companies and brokerage firms may provide advice for customers who have amassed sufficient assets at the firm. For example, Vanguard Personal Advisor Service charges 0.30% and is available to investors with at least $50,000 in assets at the firm. (The service combines human financial advisors with robo-advisor technology.)

What to watch out for: The profusion of different business models means that the business of selecting an advisor is more complicated than ever. Robo-advisor fees might look like a screaming buy relative to the fees that a full-service human advisor charges, but the robo won’t be able to give you advice on nonportfolio matters like whether to pay off your mortgage or purchase long-term care insurance.

Trend: An increased emphasis on behavioral factors that can affect investor outcomes.

What’s to like: Many robo-advisors have also embedded behaviorial research into their services.

What to watch out for: Behavioral finance is trendy right now, and with any trend comes the opportunity for gimmickry. Beware of advisors who are using behavioral finance as their main hook to snag clients; high-quality advisors have been employing behavioral finance into their practices for years.

US Tax Professionals Tackles the Tax implications of Crowdfunding (Digital Journal), Rated: A

It’s important to understand that all the income a person receives, regardless of the source, is considered taxable income in the eyes of the IRS. That includes crowdfunding dollars.

Even if the campaign only raised the projected $15,000 and no gifts were offered, the money would still be considered taxable income and need to be reported as such on a tax return.

Generally, crowdfunding revenues are included in income as long as they are not:

  • Loans that must be repaid;
  • Capital contributed to an entity in exchange for an equity interest in the entity; or
  • Gifts made out of detached generosity and without any “quid pro quo.” However, a voluntary transfer without a “quid pro quo” isn’t necessarily a gift for federal income tax purposes.

Morgan Stanley digital chief: AI to help advisers, not ‘cyborg bots’ (Financial-Planning), Rated: A

Advisers tasked with processing a “mountain of information” will get a reprieve through artificial intelligence, according to Morgan Stanley Wealth Management’s chief digital officer.

“What we want to do is, with one click of a button, they can take action on that research report to all their clients within minutes, not hours, not phone calls,” Hassan said. “That’s the promise of what we’re trying to build.”

Rival firms have shown they’re headed down a similar path. Like Morgan’s planned offering, the UBS-SigFig service will save advisers’ time through automated messaging to clients on important dates, according to Richard Steinmeier, the head of the UBS Wealth Advice Center.

UK setting the bar for fintech regulation, bank execs say (SNL.com), Rated: AAA

U.K. authorities have created a world-leading regulatory environment for the burgeoning fintech industry that is being emulated elsewhere, according to bankers.

The Financial Conduct Authority’s “sandbox,” a program launched in 2015 to let companies test innovative ideas under close regulatory supervision, has been particularly helpful, she said.

Meanwhile, initiatives such as FCA-organized hackathons — or “TechSprints” as it prefers to call them — have been particularly appreciated by the industry, according to Sophie Guibaud, vice president of European expansion at Fidor Bank AG, a German online lender that was bought by Groupe BPCE in 2016. These events invite market participants to come up with technological solutions to certain problems, such as financial issues faced by people with mental health problems.

The U.K. is home to more fintech companies valued at more than $1 billion than the rest of Europe put together, according to an April 2017 report by technology investment bank GP Bullhound. Three U.K.-based companies, Funding Circle, Paysafe and Transferwise, have crossed that threshold, and GP Bullhound said that it does not expect London to relinquish its lead, due to its prominence in international financial services.

Financial comparison site GoCompare is hoping to transform the UK’s mortgage application process by investing in MortgageGym, a digital mortgage robo-adviser.

Users can complete a free application within 15 minutes on MortgageGym and receive matches within 60 seconds, as well as robo advice and access to live advisers. The website will use automated algorithms to match applicants with the best mortgage providers.

The House Crowd hits £50m via mix of P2P and crowdfunding (P2P Finance News), Rated: A

THE HOUSE CROWD has hit the £50m funding target it set out to achieve in October last year.

The Manchester-based property platform started targeting institutional money at the end of last year to achieve its first £50m of funds channelled to property and buy-to-let borrowers, through both its peer-to-peer side and its crowdfunding arm.

The firm raised over £15m in the six months to early 2017, while a loan it closed last month added another £600,000.

Fintech CurrencyCloud tapped up investors months before Google raise (Business Insider), Rated: A

CurrencyCloud, which provides a platform to process international payments, raised £9.5 million from its existing investors in December 2016. The company had £10.5 million in the bank at the end of the month, accounts show, suggesting the platform had around £1 million left at the time of the fundraising.

The volume of payments jumped by 110% to 1.5 million but net revenue from currency transactions increased by just 10% to £3.2 million. Meanwhile, administrative expenses rose by 54% to £13.9 million as CurrencyCloud invested in “recruiting staff, developing our technology infrastructure and operations services, and moving to new office premises.”

P2P fund share issues boost investment trust sector (P2P Finance News), Rated: A

FUNDRAISINGS by Honeycomb and the Funding Circle SME Income Fund (FCIF) helped push share issues to record levels in the investment trust sector for the first half of 2017.

Secondary issuances raised £3.3bn in the first six months of the year, trade body the Association of Investment Companies has revealed, up from £1.8bn at the same time in 2016.

FCIF raised £142m in conversion shares in April, the largest total in the specialist debt sector, while the Honeycomb investment trust raised £105m through a ordinary share issue.

Alternative Credit funds drive record cash raise (AltFi), Rated: A

Assets in investment trusts have hit an all time high thanks in part to a huge swathe of secondary issuance in closed-ended funds’ shares.

In the first half of 2017, the most poplar area of the investment trust market was Infrastructure – in terms secondary issuance – raising £1.2bn. This was followed by Alternative Credit at  £514m. Funding Circle SME Income raised the largest total in the sector securing £142m via its C share issue, followed by Honeycomb Investment Trust (£105m).

According to data from National Institution of Internet Financial Risk Analysis &Technology,there are more than 19,000 online financial platforms across China, including over 6000 online lending platforms, nearly 3500 online assets managers, and 800 crowdfunding platforms. The total cumulative volume of internet loans, crowdfunding and internet payment have reached to 70 trillion RMB (US$ 10.33 trillion). Zhou Hongren, director of the National Committee of Internet Finance Professional Technology, claimed that, “No matter in terms of quantity or scale, China has already become the largest international finance marketplace around the world.”

Rocket Internet Sells Stake in Lendico Startup (Handelsblatt), Rated: AAA

Incubator firm Rocket Internet has sold its majority stake in peer-to-peer lender Lendico to Arrowgrass, Handelsblatt has learned, as the British hedge fund acquired complete ownership of the Berlin startup.

The partners to the transaction agreed to keep the purchase price confidential. Rocket Internet, which specializes in helping online startups get off the ground, most recently valued its 50-percent-plus stake in Lendico at €140 million ($159 million).

Funding Circle Germany Takes a Fresh Start (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: AAA

Germany is a huge SME and VSME (very small business) credit market. But it is not as mature a market for online marketplace lending as the UK, the US, or even the Netherlands. This partly explains why Funding Circle Germany’s early loan book underperformed. Now the platform is starting afresh to match its market’s reality.

With offices and business in Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, Zencap had originated €35 million in loans to 500 SMEs at the time of its acquisition. Its operations were very small in comparison with the more than $1.5 billion originated by Funding Circle in the US and the UK at the time (meanwhile Funding Circle passed the $3 billion mark).

The second reason for starting afresh, was a need to revisit the credit model. Since January, the new German team has been busy recalibrating and restarting the German operations.

Loan origination resumed at previous level in the first half of 2017 and is expected to grow again in the second half of this year.

Spanish Fintech Industry Comes into its Own (Finance Magnates), Rated: A

The Spanish fintech ecosystem has been a steadily growing force over the past few years, swelling from just fifty financial technology startups in 2013 to well over three hundred in 2017. This rapid surge is only going to continue with this number estimated to hit four hundred companies by 2018.

In terms of the value of the operations, this sector passed rose from just €35 million in 2014 to €206 million in 2016, justifying a 600 percent growth in just two years.

According to the Spanish Association for Fintech and Insurtech (Asociación Española de Fintech e Insurtech – Aefi), companies operating in this space in Spain are going to create a total of 10,000 jobs in 2017 alone.

While the value offintech operations in Spain is increasing, two areas that constitute the most focus are the crowdfactoring or invoice factoring crowdfunding platforms – these saw a total of €120 milion euros in 2016, that concentrate most of the operations domestically, followed by crowdfunding with €43.5 million and crowdlending or p2p lending with €42 million.

Visa Expands Its Footprint in Europe (Market Realist), Rated: AAA

In May 2017, Visa announced that in order to give consumers more control and make transactions transparent, the company will create digital card management experiences for its partners. Visa’s partners include financial institutions. Since the new offerings will lead to more transparency, Visa expects to see volume growth in fiscal 3Q17. Market analysts expect Visa to report revenues of $4.36 billion in fiscal 3Q17—a decline of 2.7%.

 

What Can Visa Expect from Russia, China, Japan, and India?

In fiscal 2Q17, there was growth in Visa’s cross-border business due to Russia’s developed economy. Visa implemented ~1,600 point-of-sale terminals. As a result, payment volumes are expected to grow in fiscal 3Q17.

The Reserve Bank of India is learnt to be wary of peerto-peer lending platforms offering any FLDG, or first loan default guarantee, cover to institutional lenders for any lending they do through these technology startups, said sources familiar with the discussions.

While various lending entities are keen on exploring this space as a cheap source of customers, they often look for a security cover against loans going bad. Experts say such guarantees or covers might go against the intentions of the central bank.

Six in 10 Mexicans are unbanked. IEG Holdings Highlights the Urgency of LendingClub Correcting its Flawed, Slim Margin “Broker” Business Model and Weak Underwriting Standards (Sys-Con), Rated: AAA

IEG Holdings yesterday announced the commencement of a tender offer to exchange four shares of IEG Holdings’ common stock for each share of LendingClub common stock, up to an aggregate of 40,345,603 shares of LendingClub common stock, representing approximately 9.99% of LendingClub’s outstanding shares as of April 28, 2017, validly tendered and not properly withdrawn in the offer.

IEG Holdings Corporation (OTCQB: IEGH) (“IEG Holdings”) cautions shareholders of LendingClub Corporation (“LendingClub”) against dismissing IEG Holdings’ tender offer. IEG Holdings believes that the LendingClub board of directors should be held accountable by its shareholders for continuing to pursue a flawed, slim margin “broker” business model. IEG Holdings urges LendingClub to enter into negotiations with IEG Holdings, rather than simply dismissing the tender offer.

FLAWED, SLIM MARGIN, LOSS-MAKING BUSINESS MODEL

Despite brokering more than $26 billion of loans since inception, LendingClub still reported a loss of $29.8 million for Q1 2017 and loss of $146.0 million for the 2016 full year. Transitioning to a balance sheet lender likely would significantly increase gross margins, without a significant change in customer acquisition costs.

WEAK UNDERWRITING STANDARDS

A recent media report by Bloomberg indicates that:

  • LendingClub only verified income about a third of the time for one of the most popular loans it made in 2016, and
  • If LendingClub finds errors in a loan application, it may still approve the loan.

LACK OF COMPANY-OWNED STATE LENDING LICENSES

LendingClub doesn’t hold individual state lending licenses and instead utilizes the services of a Utah-based bank. This raises regulatory risks around issues such as the potential breaking of individual state interest rate caps and compliance.

POOR STOCK MARKET PERFORMANCE AND ZERO DIVIDENDS TO SHAREHOLDERS

LendingClub’s share price has decreased 79% since its initial public offering in December 2014, dropping from $25.74 in December 2014 to $5.39 yesterday, after reaching a low of $3.51 in May 2016. In addition, LendingClub has never paid, and has no reported intention to pay, a dividend to shareholders.

IEG Holdings’ Reasons for the Offer

IEG Holdings believes that changing LendingClub’s business model to a balance sheet lender model would enable the company to generate significantly higher gross margins, provide significantly higher long duration cash flow from customers, build increased customer goodwill with customers and enable increased customer refinancing. The longer duration cash flow would provide more flexibility in reducing lending volumes during periods when underwriting risk levels are rising, as the company would be less dependent on brokering new loan deals every day to provide revenue.

  • IEG Holdings intends to encourage LendingClub to undertake substantial costs cuts by terminating excess employees, achieving substantial cuts in advertising/marketing costs and other significant cost cutting measures;
  • IEG Holdings intends to encourage LendingClub to transform its broker business model with low gross margins and high volumes to focus on high gross margin unsecured loans to near prime clients with strong underwriting, company owned individual state licenses and retention of loans on its balance sheet to secure long duration cash flow from longer term loans; and
  • The acquisition of LendingClub shares would be substantially net asset per share accretive for IEG Holdings stockholders and substantially increase shareholder equity.

New partnership turns PayPal into Apple App Store payment option (Banking Tech), Rated: A

Finicity and JP Morgan Chase pair for data share (Banking Tech), Rated: A

Data aggregation provider Finicity has signed an agreement with JP Morgan Chase to let the bank’s customers choose data to share with apps.

The companies will use a direct API to allow Chase customers to share information with the apps and services that Finicity supports. According to the firms, this tokenised access will eliminate the need for customers to share their Chase credentials with third-party apps.

Paypal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL): Beginning of Market Dominance (Library for Smart Investors), Rated: A

Paypal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) is getting investors attention after the stock touched fresh highs amid a new partnership with Apple.

The stock is up over 43% since the start of the year.

In the first quarter, PayPal saw a jump of 10.3% in monthly active users on year-over-year basis. The total number of transactions also increased by 22.5% in the period.

In the first quarter, Venmo processed $6.8 billion in total payments, a 100% growth on year-over-year basis. Venmo is slated to grow more as the company expands to small businesses.

Wells Fargo trims auto loans as market cools, risk overhaul kicks in (Reuters), Rated: A

Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) is scaling back and remolding its auto lending business in response to growing stress in the market, as well as a bank-wide push for more centralized risk controls.

Wells, which was the No. 2 U.S. provider of auto loans less than a year ago, has already cut quarterly originations by nearly 30 percent over the nine months leading into March 31, according to a May 11 company presentation. It has also begun consolidating the collections operation in a move that people familiar with the business say could eliminate hundreds of jobs, after a new head of auto finance took the reins in April.

This New York City-based startup facilitates micro-loans between borrowers and lenders, allowing users to set up pretty much all the parameters of a loan themselves: users can control the amount, the interest rate, the payback period, and the way they are reimbursed for the loan themselves.

Ledger

Ledger might be able to help out there: this San Francisco-based startup allows users to “open tabs with friends,” boiling down a transaction to just 3 clicks. By connecting with a user’s financial accounts (protected by “military-grade” cybersecurity, according to the company), users are able to aggregate all of their transactions in one place, as well as receive notification about when transactions are due.

Wallio

More and more companies are striving to solve the main problem when it comes to personal finance management services: how do you make a user actually take the financial advice that is being offered?

Wallio starts off the week by giving a user an allocated amount of money they can spend for that week, on whatever the user wants (expenses and savings are already factored into this amount). If a user underspends, great: Wallio will allow that user to put that money towards a goal. If a user overspends, Wallio will simply allocate less money for the user to spend next week.

Trend: Passive products continue to gain assets.

This is the trend shaping the investment management industry today. Asset flows to passive products, both traditional index mutual funds and exchange-traded funds, began in earnest following disappointing active-fund performance during the financial crisis.

Trend: New ways to hire–and pay for–financial advice. 

Robo-advisors provide automated advice for a low annual fee as low as 0.25% or even less. Meanwhile, mutual fund companies and brokerage firms may provide advice for customers who have amassed sufficient assets at the firm. For example, Vanguard Personal Advisor Service charges 0.30% and is available to investors with at least $50,000 in assets at the firm. (The service combines human financial advisors with robo-advisor technology.)

What to watch out for: The profusion of different business models means that the business of selecting an advisor is more complicated than ever. Robo-advisor fees might look like a screaming buy relative to the fees that a full-service human advisor charges, but the robo won’t be able to give you advice on nonportfolio matters like whether to pay off your mortgage or purchase long-term care insurance.

Trend: An increased emphasis on behavioral factors that can affect investor outcomes.

What’s to like: Many robo-advisors have also embedded behaviorial research into their services.

What to watch out for: Behavioral finance is trendy right now, and with any trend comes the opportunity for gimmickry. Beware of advisors who are using behavioral finance as their main hook to snag clients; high-quality advisors have been employing behavioral finance into their practices for years.

US Tax Professionals Tackles the Tax implications of Crowdfunding (Digital Journal), Rated: A

It’s important to understand that all the income a person receives, regardless of the source, is considered taxable income in the eyes of the IRS. That includes crowdfunding dollars.

Even if the campaign only raised the projected $15,000 and no gifts were offered, the money would still be considered taxable income and need to be reported as such on a tax return.

Generally, crowdfunding revenues are included in income as long as they are not:

  • Loans that must be repaid;
  • Capital contributed to an entity in exchange for an equity interest in the entity; or
  • Gifts made out of detached generosity and without any “quid pro quo.” However, a voluntary transfer without a “quid pro quo” isn’t necessarily a gift for federal income tax purposes.

Morgan Stanley digital chief: AI to help advisers, not ‘cyborg bots’ (Financial-Planning), Rated: A

Advisers tasked with processing a “mountain of information” will get a reprieve through artificial intelligence, according to Morgan Stanley Wealth Management’s chief digital officer.

“What we want to do is, with one click of a button, they can take action on that research report to all their clients within minutes, not hours, not phone calls,” Hassan said. “That’s the promise of what we’re trying to build.”

Rival firms have shown they’re headed down a similar path. Like Morgan’s planned offering, the UBS-SigFig service will save advisers’ time through automated messaging to clients on important dates, according to Richard Steinmeier, the head of the UBS Wealth Advice Center.

UK setting the bar for fintech regulation, bank execs say (SNL.com), Rated: AAA

U.K. authorities have created a world-leading regulatory environment for the burgeoning fintech industry that is being emulated elsewhere, according to bankers.

The Financial Conduct Authority’s “sandbox,” a program launched in 2015 to let companies test innovative ideas under close regulatory supervision, has been particularly helpful, she said.

Meanwhile, initiatives such as FCA-organized hackathons — or “TechSprints” as it prefers to call them — have been particularly appreciated by the industry, according to Sophie Guibaud, vice president of European expansion at Fidor Bank AG, a German online lender that was bought by Groupe BPCE in 2016. These events invite market participants to come up with technological solutions to certain problems, such as financial issues faced by people with mental health problems.

The U.K. is home to more fintech companies valued at more than $1 billion than the rest of Europe put together, according to an April 2017 report by technology investment bank GP Bullhound. Three U.K.-based companies, Funding Circle, Paysafe and Transferwise, have crossed that threshold, and GP Bullhound said that it does not expect London to relinquish its lead, due to its prominence in international financial services.

Comparison site GoCompare invests in mortgage robo-adviser (AltFi), Rated: A

Financial comparison site GoCompare is hoping to transform the UK’s mortgage application process by investing in MortgageGym, a digital mortgage robo-adviser.

Users can complete a free application within 15 minutes on MortgageGym and receive matches within 60 seconds, as well as robo advice and access to live advisers. The website will use automated algorithms to match applicants with the best mortgage providers.

The House Crowd hits £50m via mix of P2P and crowdfunding (P2P Finance News), Rated: A

THE HOUSE CROWD has hit the £50m funding target it set out to achieve in October last year.

The Manchester-based property platform started targeting institutional money at the end of last year to achieve its first £50m of funds channelled to property and buy-to-let borrowers, through both its peer-to-peer side and its crowdfunding arm.

The firm raised over £15m in the six months to early 2017, while a loan it closed last month added another £600,000.

Fintech CurrencyCloud tapped up investors months before Google raise (Business Insider), Rated: A

CurrencyCloud, which provides a platform to process international payments, raised £9.5 million from its existing investors in December 2016. The company had £10.5 million in the bank at the end of the month, accounts show, suggesting the platform had around £1 million left at the time of the fundraising.

The volume of payments jumped by 110% to 1.5 million but net revenue from currency transactions increased by just 10% to £3.2 million. Meanwhile, administrative expenses rose by 54% to £13.9 million as CurrencyCloud invested in “recruiting staff, developing our technology infrastructure and operations services, and moving to new office premises.”

P2P fund share issues boost investment trust sector (P2P Finance News), Rated: A

FUNDRAISINGS by Honeycomb and the Funding Circle SME Income Fund (FCIF) helped push share issues to record levels in the investment trust sector for the first half of 2017.

Secondary issuances raised £3.3bn in the first six months of the year, trade body the Association of Investment Companies has revealed, up from £1.8bn at the same time in 2016.

FCIF raised £142m in conversion shares in April, the largest total in the specialist debt sector, while the Honeycomb investment trust raised £105m through a ordinary share issue.

Alternative Credit funds drive record cash raise (AltFi), Rated: A

Assets in investment trusts have hit an all time high thanks in part to a huge swathe of secondary issuance in closed-ended funds’ shares.

In the first half of 2017, the most poplar area of the investment trust market was Infrastructure – in terms secondary issuance – raising £1.2bn. This was followed by Alternative Credit at  £514m. Funding Circle SME Income raised the largest total in the sector securing £142m via its C share issue, followed by Honeycomb Investment Trust (£105m).

According to data from National Institution of Internet Financial Risk Analysis &Technology,there are more than 19,000 online financial platforms across China, including over 6000 online lending platforms, nearly 3500 online assets managers, and 800 crowdfunding platforms. The total cumulative volume of internet loans, crowdfunding and internet payment have reached to 70 trillion RMB (US$ 10.33 trillion). Zhou Hongren, director of the National Committee of Internet Finance Professional Technology, claimed that, “No matter in terms of quantity or scale, China has already become the largest international finance marketplace around the world.”

Rocket Internet Sells Stake in Lendico Startup (Handelsblatt), Rated: AAA

Incubator firm Rocket Internet has sold its majority stake in peer-to-peer lender Lendico to Arrowgrass, Handelsblatt has learned, as the British hedge fund acquired complete ownership of the Berlin startup.

The partners to the transaction agreed to keep the purchase price confidential. Rocket Internet, which specializes in helping online startups get off the ground, most recently valued its 50-percent-plus stake in Lendico at €140 million ($159 million).

Funding Circle Germany Takes a Fresh Start (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: AAA

Germany is a huge SME and VSME (very small business) credit market. But it is not as mature a market for online marketplace lending as the UK, the US, or even the Netherlands. This partly explains why Funding Circle Germany’s early loan book underperformed. Now the platform is starting afresh to match its market’s reality.

With offices and business in Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, Zencap had originated €35 million in loans to 500 SMEs at the time of its acquisition. Its operations were very small in comparison with the more than $1.5 billion originated by Funding Circle in the US and the UK at the time (meanwhile Funding Circle passed the $3 billion mark).

The second reason for starting afresh, was a need to revisit the credit model. Since January, the new German team has been busy recalibrating and restarting the German operations.

Loan origination resumed at previous level in the first half of 2017 and is expected to grow again in the second half of this year.

Spanish Fintech Industry Comes into its Own (Finance Magnates), Rated: A

The Spanish fintech ecosystem has been a steadily growing force over the past few years, swelling from just fifty financial technology startups in 2013 to well over three hundred in 2017. This rapid surge is only going to continue with this number estimated to hit four hundred companies by 2018.

In terms of the value of the operations, this sector passed rose from just €35 million in 2014 to €206 million in 2016, justifying a 600 percent growth in just two years.

According to the Spanish Association for Fintech and Insurtech (Asociación Española de Fintech e Insurtech – Aefi), companies operating in this space in Spain are going to create a total of 10,000 jobs in 2017 alone.

While the value offintech operations in Spain is increasing, two areas that constitute the most focus are the crowdfactoring or invoice factoring crowdfunding platforms – these saw a total of €120 milion euros in 2016, that concentrate most of the operations domestically, followed by crowdfunding with €43.5 million and crowdlending or p2p lending with €42 million.

Visa Expands Its Footprint in Europe (Market Realist), Rated: AAA

In May 2017, Visa announced that in order to give consumers more control and make transactions transparent, the company will create digital card management experiences for its partners. Visa’s partners include financial institutions. Since the new offerings will lead to more transparency, Visa expects to see volume growth in fiscal 3Q17. Market analysts expect Visa to report revenues of $4.36 billion in fiscal 3Q17—a decline of 2.7%.

The Reserve Bank of India is learnt to be wary of peerto-peer lending platforms offering any FLDG, or first loan default guarantee, cover to institutional lenders for any lending they do through these technology startups, said sources familiar with the discussions.

While various lending entities are keen on exploring this space as a cheap source of customers, they often look for a security cover against loans going bad. Experts say such guarantees or covers might go against the intentions of the central bank.

In many ways where online lending is in 2017 parallels the early days of online retail, Scott Sanborn said at the LendIt conference in New York on Monday. In 1999, I was a partner in launching one of the world’s first pure online banks. At the time, the idea was controversial to say the least.

Since launching our online bank, the industry has, in fits and starts, adopted the technologies necessary to provide some form of online banking to their clients.

While earning fees on deposits, overdrawn checks, and so forth are an important component of the typical bank’s revenue statement, the real juice comes from lending.

And that’s where the banks have a real problem.

With the credit freeze locking out many ordinary Americans, the door opened wide for Peer-to-Peer lending platforms. A radical new approach to lending, P2P platforms act as intermediaries between borrowers and investors, bypassing the traditional gatekeepers of credit… the banks.

Given the positives, the P2P share of unsecured consumer loans is projected to enjoy a compounded annual growth rate of 47%, rising to 8.4% of the market by 2020.

With P2P investing thriving in the sub $250k space, banks are beginning to take note. As a senior banker friend of ours commented, the bankers are now paying very close attention to the rising competition.

Unlike the Boomers, Millennials have no loyalty or connection with banks. That’s why they are twice as likely to switch banks. Over 94% consumers under the age of 35 are active users of online banking.

Already about one-third of 18-to 34-year-olds have used P2P lending, with the average age for Lending Club users just 30.

Credit Cards, Friends and Family and Savings Aren’t Helping Nonprime Americans (BusinessWire), Rated: A

It’s no secret that nonprime (subprime) Americans have limited personal resources to weather unexpected expenses – but new data from Elevate’s Center for the New Middle Class reveals that informal, relationship-based options for emergency loans are largely unavailable as well. According to research released today by the Center, which researches and reports on the realities of being nonprime in America, almost 70 percent of nonprime Americans couldn’t cover an urgent expense of $500 or more with their savings and 64 percent wouldn’t be able to borrow that amount from friends and family. These findings complement the Federal Reserve Board’s 2016 finding that 46 percent of Americans do not have $400 in savings to cover an emergency expense.

This latest study focuses on how nonprime Americans – defined as those having a credit score below 700 – borrow money as they are largely barred from traditional prime products, like personal loans from banks or even loans from new online lending companies that are focused on prime consumers.

Additional key findings include:

  • 71 percent would not be able to borrow $2,000 from family or friends if an urgent need arose
  • 72 percent of nonprime Americans would not be able to put $500 on a credit card
  • 80 percent would not be able to put $2,000 on a credit card
  • 59 percent said they “regularly” carry a credit card balance
  • Only 1 in 5 nonprime Americans have borrowed from friends or family in the last 12 months
  • 7 percent use overdraft protection strategically, using it to cover expenses for which they did not have money

At first look, it seemed to be an unlikely crowd for a conference involving technology-focused disruptors, but perhaps the formality of the event was indicative of the startups in attendance – growing companies beginning to rub shoulders with the establishment.

Fidelity’s New Robo Ups Ante for Advisors (Financial Advisor IQ), Rated: A

After launching its robo for retail investors last summer, Fidelity Investments is forging ahead on a revamped technology platform for advisors. By mid-year, the asset manager and financial services custodian expects to offer its 3,000-plus customer base of RIAs and brokerages a whole new set of online tools to manage client portfolios.

But Fidelity isn’t the only industry heavyweight trying to develop robo technologies for advisors, says Sean McDermott, an analyst with Corporate Insight in New York.

BrickVest has deals worth £250m (€294m) in its platform at the moment, and estimates that figure will increase by £50m-70m at the end of the first quarter of this year.

Institutional investment through credit lines and co-investments is underpinning the industry, making up 73% of the market, according to O’Roarty. In the UK, retail investors account for 75% of the funds raised – although regulatory concerns about the suitability of retail investors could change the landscape in the future.

PropertyCrowd is finalising its first deal, a gross loan of £1.28m, with participation through PropertyCrowd standing at £432,000 (the firm will take on a maximum 50% debt participation).

Its first non-exchange-traded e-REIT, offered to both accredited and non-accredited investors, was oversubscribed by 403% in four hours when it launched in December 2015. As with all new markets, crowdfunding real estate platforms will inevitably experience their share of growing pains. They will also have to get larger. In 2015, the sector totalled only $600m – the total commercial real estate market stands at $704bn.

There are several conditions in Israel’s economy that are driving an interest in investment properties. The most obvious is the increasingly high sale prices. The average price of owner-occupied residencies in Israel rose by 4.01% during the year to Q1 2016, to ILS1,423,000 (US$369,107), from annual price rises of 6% in Q4 2015, 5.2% to Q3, and 7.3% to Q2, and 7.6% to Q1, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). The main reason for the continued rise in house prices is the supply shortage, due to low construction volumes.

One of the more innovative programs to enter the property investment market is the crowd-funding method that a number of leading companies are taking ownership of. Crowdfunding, adopted by high-tech startups as an alternative means to raise funds, was limited in Israel by Israel’s Securities Law until 2016. Section 15 of the law dictated that any offer or sale of shares to the public (i.e. to more than 35 potential investors) requires the issuance of a prospectus approved by the Securities Authority; a timely and costly endeavor, formerly rendering crowdfunding prohibitive in Israel.

Although Crowdfunding for real estate is a relatively new space, crowdfunding for real estate platforms were responsible for raising over $100 million in 2015 alone for hundreds of real estate properties across the U.S.  Real Estate crowdfunding platforms in Israel offer an opportunity for virtually any pocket and the way it works is very simple.

Bank Mandiri bets on peer-to-peer lender (Nikkei Asian Review), Rated: AAA

The venture capital arm of Bank Mandiri, Indonesia’s largest state-owned bank by assets, on Tuesday said it has acquired a stake in peer-to-peer lending startup Amartha Mikro Fintek.

Amartha Mikro develops credit-scoring technology that evaluates small businesses that conventional banks have deemed too risky to lend to. It then connects them with individual lenders over a website.

It specializes in loans under 10 million rupiah ($750) and has a network of agents in Java that helps potential customers submit online applications.

Most Consumers Open to Robo-Only Retirement Advice (Financial Advisor IQ), Rated: AAA

Most people are willing to trust robo-advisors for retirement planning and investment advice, but the majority also want human interaction when it comes to more complex tasks, according to a new survey from consulting firm Accenture.

Sixty-eight percent of people are open to robo-only advice for retirement planning and 78% say they’d welcome it for investing advice, according to a survey of close to 33,000 consumers, of which close to 10,000 were working with a professional wealth or asset manager, in 18 countries and regions conducted in May and June by Accenture.

Nonetheless, Accenture also found that 38% of consumers would switch to Google, Amazon or Facebook for financial advice services, while only 31% would go to one of the tech giants for banking and 29% for insurance.

Morningstar Corporate Credit Research Highlights (Morningstar), Rated: AAA

The levels in the corporate bond markets are the tightest that credit spreads have registered since the fall of 2014 and are significantly tighter than their long-term averages. The average spread of the Morningstar Corporate Bond Index is 42 basis points tighter than its long-term average of +168 since the end of 1998. The average spread of the Bank of America Merrill Lynch High Yield Master Index is currently 187 basis points tighter than its long-term average of +580 basis points since the end of 1996.

Currency Capital grabs funding from Lovell Minnick Partners (PE Hub), Rated: A

Lovell Minnick Partners, a private equity firm specializing in financial and related business services companies, today announced that it has made a growth capital investment in Currency Capital, LLC, an online equipment financing exchange serving owners of small- and medium-sized companies. The investment will support Currency Capital’s growth strategies. Financial terms of the private transaction were not disclosed.

With Currency Capital, borrowers are provided with unparalleled, instant access to financing options from hundreds of lenders with “one click,” making the entire application, selection, approval and funding process simple and transparent.

Currency Capital provided approximately $150 million in loans to customers in 2016. Equipment buyers are also able to purchase equipment for sale by the Company’s industry-leading partners: eBay, Big Tex Trailers, IronPlanet and Proxibid.

Nyca Partners Raises $ 125M For Second FinTech VC Fund (PYMNTS.com), Rated: B

Nyca Partners, the venture capital firm focused on the FinTech market, raised $125 million for a second fund. According to a report, Hans Morris, the former Visa president turned venture capitalist, created Nyca Partners in 2014, launching a $30 million fund. The fund invested in a slew of FinTech startups, including Lending Club, SigFig and Orchard. The new fund, which includes 10 institutional investors and 29 limited partner advisors, has made investments in about a dozen startups, including Embroker and Ladder, two insurance FinTechs.

Will the UK Retain the Fintech Crown? (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: AAA

The change in government, and the ramifications of the Brexit decision, has clearly stressed the UK’s prominence in innovative finance. Continental Europe is attempting to take advantage of the decision to depart Europe and Asian business centers, like Singapore and Hong Kong, are seeking to claim the Fintech crown.

Roche-Saunders is a partner at the firm of Bates, Wells & Braithwaite in London, where she manages their financial services regulatory consultancy.

Crowdfund Insider: 2016 was a choppy year for some Fintech/Crowdfunding platforms.

Gillian Roche-Saunders: 2016 was a year of highs and lows, and I think it’s fair to say the lows have received more press.

One of my key takeaways from the year is how crowdfunding now feels established as an alternative source of capital.

Crowdfund Insider: What about Peer to Peer lending platforms? You predicted last year there would be more robust rules for online lenders like the handling of client money, vetting, and wind downs. Is that still going to occur?

Gillian Roche-Saunders: What I didn’t predict was that there could be such a disconnect over the definition of peer-to-peer lending activity.  The Treasury drafted article 36H specifically to capture the peer-to-peer lending industry’s activities, yet we’ve spent much of the year debating with the FCA whether the industry is actually undertaking that same activity.  It could sound like quite a dull and technical debate until you realise that only article 36H loan agreements can go into the Innovative Finance ISA.  The knock-on effects of the FCA and Treasury not being joined up on this point are significant for consumers and platforms.   

Crowdfund Insider: How is the current political environment for Fintech? Does the government embrace the strategic importance of Fintech for the UK innovation economy?

Gillian Roche-Saunders: If you’d asked me a year ago I would have said that political support was beyond dispute.  We had the best ecosystem for Fintech with a regulator and government behind it 100%.  I still think we’re heading in the right direction, and let’s not forget it’s been quite a year for the UK, but it does seem as if the government has taken their foot off the Fintech pedal.

Crowdfund Insider: Are you seeing additional Brexit driven concern for Fintech firms? Anyone moving to Paris or Berlin?

Gillian Roche-Saunders: There continues to be a lot of chatter about the Brexit risk, and comments that we will see our talent and companies move abroad.  Anecdotally, we have seen the opposite.  

As for UK companies, the impact of Brexit will vary depending on the client base.  Institutionally focused players, like enterprise tech and Regtech firms, may find their client base moving overseas and need to follow. The challenges in operating in a truly cross-border way have meant that crowdfunding hasn’t been reliant on Europe and that is likely to insulate the industry now.

Crowdfund Insider: What are your predictions for 2017 regarding alternative finance? Another year of growth & innovation or consolidation?

Gillian Roche-Saunders: It’s stating the obvious but 2017 will be the year of the Innovative Finance ISA.  Many firms have been laying the groundwork on that for quite some time but we’ve seen a real spike in activity since autumn.

We can certainly expect more innovation generally.  As platforms continue to compete for profile and customers, new opportunities to differentiate will be taken up.  It will be interesting to see if there is more cross fertilisation between the lending and investment models. We’ve advised clients to focus on one route or another initially – the FCA may treat both sectors under the broad church of crowdfunding but the models are very different – but this year may be the first time when bringing together both under one roof makes sense.

I would expect moves towards consolidation too.

Crowd2Fund to offer P2P white label product (P2P Finance News), Rated: A

CROWD2FUND is rolling out a white label solution for institutions wishing to expand into peer-to-peer lending.

The platform, which is one of only four P2P lenders to offer the Innovative Finance ISA, is already in talks with potential partners.

Institutions – such as investment firms – will be able to use Crowd2Fund’s “Powered by” feature to operate as a P2P platform under their own brand. Crowd2Fund says it has already seen “significant demand” from institutions looking to leverage their customer base, although it declined to name which ones.

Financial technology firm Orca in £280,000 seed funding boost (The Irish News), Rated: A

BELAST-based fintech company Orca Money has raised £280,000 seed capital which it will use to build on it peer-to-peer lending focused financial media site Orca Retail, launched a year ago.

The alternative finance market has continued to flourish in the UK, with the peer-to-peer lending market growing to £3.13 billion last year and featuring more than 177,000 investors.

A third product, Orca Investments, will be launched early 2018 allowing retail investors and IFAs to invest in a diversified fund, comprised of peer-to-peer investments.

Peer-to-peer lenders lead increase in personal loans (The Sydney Morning Herald), Rated: AAA

The latest Quarterly Consumer Credit Demand Index from credit agency Veda shows the number of personal loan applications for the December 2016 quarter was 12.4 per cent higher than the December 2015 quarter.

There was a significant pick-up in the growth of personal loan applications in all states and territories, led by NSW and the Northern Territory with an increase of 14.5 per cent, Queensland with 13.1 per cent and Victoria with 12.5 per cent.

Overall consumer credit applications are up 7.7 per cent, with credit card applications rising 3 per cent and mortgage applications up 6.6 per cent.

However, the Veda figures reveal wide geographic variations with mortgage applications.

They were 14.9 per cent higher in the Australian Capital Territory, 11.2 per cent higher in Tasmania, 10.6 per cent higher in Victoria and 9.6 per cent higher in NSW.

However, in Western Australia, applications were 10.6 per cent lower and 10.8 per cent lower in the Northern Territory.

Treasury plans law on peer-to-peer lending (Haaretz), Rated: A

Israel’s Finance Ministry released a draft version of a proposed law Monday that would encourage online peer-to-peer lending by creating a regulatory framework for it. The new law will also create protections for the people lending money through P2P websites, as well as for the borrowers – a move the treasury hopes will give the nascent industry more legitimacy and enable it to become a more serious competitor to the banks and credit card companies.

The Capital Markets Authority will be responsible for enforcing the proposed regulations.

Israel is famous for its startup ecosystem. With the rise of fintech giants in the United States, Israeli entrepreneurs developing their own p2p lending companies was a given.

The p2p lending ecosystem has seen many American clones. Tarya is different because it offers both a true P2P general market but also a white-labeled community-focused sub-P2P markets.

Communities focused

Tarya is interested in offering loans by leveraging communities. For example, an organization that is interested in offering loans to its employees through Tarya, need to go online and sign up as an organization, confirm personal details of the employee, along with the underwriting process, and permit taking out monthly loan repayments from the employee’s salary. The organization’s involvement is merely technical – it is not obligated to finance the loans and does not have any liability to either the employee or Tarya. The borrower can apply directly via the website of the community or the community manager can fill in the details. It usually takes 1 hour to set up. Currently, Tarya deals with 4 types of communities.

The platform’s architecture is built to enable community structures for lending and borrowing. The community, in this example, is structured around an organization and its employees. So you often have both lender and borrower origination from the same community. Each organization-community set their loan parameters, depending upon the type of organization and sector, security level, other parameters such as seniority, salary level etc. The platform also provides a sophisticated credit-scoring model relying on the usual banking-inspired large-data underwriting algorithms.

P2P

Lenders can be of any community, they see all the borrowers from all the communities under one big pool. Tarya does not manually choose who the lenders for each loan should be. Anyone who wants to be a lender can go to the website, set up the risk parameters like loan purposes, interest rate, risk level etc. So the lenders can either lend manually or can use the “smart agent” developed by the start-up which will invest in the loans on the basis of lending parameters decided by the lender. The parameters can be the duration of the loan, salary levels, interest rates etc. Smart agent automatically allocates the fund to the loans that match the parameters and thus enabling maximum diversification.

Secured fund

Another interesting innovation in Tarya is the company’s semi-secured fund. In order to limit the risk exposure, once a lender has chosen his investment criteria, Tarya puts a lender into at least 200 loans, if possible. This ensures that no single loan will affect more than 0.5% of the portfolio.  Any risk above 0.5% is compensated through the secured fund. The lender can also choose a higher security level, for example, he wants to be diversified into at least 500 loans. This will reduce his risk to any particular loan to 0.2%. The investor will pay a premium for such a diversification, creating another revenue stream for the company.

Key numbers

The company has about 1000 lenders and on average they have invested $50,000 USD per lender through the platform. The minimum investment is 5,000ILS or $1,000 USD, another option is to start a monthly saving whereby anyone can start with as low as 500 ILS. Few of their premium lenders have invested over $6 million ILS. So far the start-up has originated loans worth 80million ILS, on average they are doing 14m ILS per month and are aiming to cross 200million ILS by the end of 2016.

Smart underwriting is the general pool, and white label is a SaaS service for companies looking to launch a p2p lender without reinventing the p2p technology. Tarya extensively deals with community #2 and #3, because in the community of lenders or borrowers there is more accountability and connection, and one can choose his/her community and apply accordingly.

Underwriting and key numbers

Depending on the borrower’s credit score, the interest rate for borrowers ranges from 3.5%-8.0%. The origination fee is between 0.9-5.5 % of the loan amount. Lenders pay a fee of 1.0% on returns.   Credit Cards charge an average of 11% and lenders investing in diversified and micro-financed portfolios average between 5%-6% returns after fees. Thus lending and borrowing through Tarya are beneficial for all the stakeholders. The typical length of the loan ranges from 3 to 60 months and so far, they have not witnessed any defaults.

Company background

Tarya is one of the largest Israeli P2P lending platforms and was launched in January 2014 but started doing business in May 2014. Its aim is to provide a community led profitable financial experience for both borrowers and lenders.

Tarya was founded by Eyal Elhayany, who has founded numerous internet ventures, and held various management roles in leading companies in Israel. The founding team has Assaf Shlush, VP R&D and Verde Losthoiz, head of regulatory and legal and the former legal head of Bank of Israel.  They entered the Israeli crowd funding industry to help in the financial transformation of the existing banking credit system. They are tackling regulatory, business and cultural challenges and they believe Tarya has the potential to change Israel’s credit market structure. Israeli banking sector is concentrated and not competitive, especially when it comes to household and SME sectors. Hence they felt developing an option for these sectors is the need of the hour and also for the development of the nation. The founding team feels the effects of P2P and crowd funding will be significant and profound.

Regulation

Tarya is regulated under nonbanking loans, but soon they will be applying for the regulation for the p2p platform. They are hoping in next couple of years p2p will be regulated in Israel by treasury office and central bank. Another USP of the company is a secured fund. In order to limit the risk exposure,

Tarya is aggressively building one of the largest p2p companies in Israel. But its secret sauce is not its size or speed of growth, but its business model of communities and loan diversification model which will be a huge barrier for any newcomer looking to grow in Israel.
