SALT Lending’s co-founder, Blake Cohen, started working on blockchain technology in 2014. Shawn Owen joined with Cohen and spent the next year surveying the evolving blockchain landscape. The blockchain universe lacked a host of products and services required to support the growing sector, but their Eureka moment came when they saw there was no lending product that allowed blockchain assets to be collateralized for lending in fiat currencies.
Cohen is now the chief business development officer. His background in real estate coupled with a family history in hard money lending helped him realize the problem of liquidity in the crypto world. After spending a few months conducting a thorough feasibility study where he evaluated the technology barriers, regulatory hurdles, and market size of the crypto market, he realized there was a massive business opportunity. He and Owen incorporated SALT Lending in June 2016 and launched its operations in June 2017.
The company is based in Denver, Colorado. The one year between incorporation and launch was spent building the technology and in business development. The platform enables cryptocurrency owners to take a loan using their cryptocurrency as collateral thereby safeguarding their investments, which can be reclaimed at any time after the repayment of the loan. This allows them to monetize their blockchain investments without having to sell them off. Salt facilitates liquidity for borrowers, but they still get to enjoy the upside (or downside) in the price of their original investments.
The platform went public at the Consensus conference held in New York in 2017 and received an overwhelming response. It started official disbursement of loans in December 2017.
Funding Crypto Lending
Initially, SALT Lending was funded through family and friends and raised an amount in the region of $1 million. Last year, it went on with a membership sale denominated in utility tokens – SALT. The same was considered as a revenue event and not a fundraising initiative. The sale of tokens is still going on. In the discounted round, it had raised an amount of $42 million.
The thought process behind issuance of membership tokens was that ICO is a misleading term and usually confused with IPOs (Initial Public Offering). Membership tokens offered by the company will bring the interested population to the company’s platform without requiring it to spend huge amounts of money on marketing. The idea seems corollary to an IPO, but the difference is that IPOs create shareholders in the company whereas only a small percentage of ICOs are securities giving contributors ownership rights. The majority of ICOs generate utility tokens that are to be utilized in the business ecosystem of the company.
How the SALT Lending Platform Works
The biggest driver behind the platform is its in-house technology. The automated platform operates on Ethereum-based smart contracts that facilitate crypto loans backed by blockchain assets as collateral. Membership, premier, and enterprise versions of products offered by the company allow investors to receive loans in USD or any other currency depending upon selection of the package.
The blockchain assets of borrowers are secured by the company’s proprietary custodian technology. The proprietary multi-signature wallet regularly monitors the blockchain assets from origination till release thereby reducing the risk. The multiple signer features provide borrower and lender with a private key along with a third-party custodian; this ensures that there can be no misappropriation of the collateral.
With a view to minimize the default risk, SALT Oracle Wallet regularly tracks the value of collateral assets and generates alerts in case of a drop in value below a certain specified limit, which will further trigger liquidation of the collateral. Each loan originates with an LTV of about 60%. In case of a drop in valuation, the system will automatically liquidate a certain portion of the collateral to reach the original LTV, but only after notifying the borrower.
Products offered by the company facilitate borrowers with a maximum of 36 month term loans with interest rates ranging from 10% to 20% depending upon the LTV. Very few companies are offering loans with such favorable conditions. The first product offered by the company was in the form of fiat loans backed by crypto assets.
At present, SALT Lending is working with over 70 full-time employees, has processed 17,000 loan requests, and has 12,000 active SALT members. To date, it has originated loans worth $40 million.
The customer base is widely distributed across different segments. The comapany also serves small investors who are keen to invest in cryptocurrency and do not want to sell their assets for temporary liquidity issues. The purpose of loans may vary from customer to customer. Some may use a loan to repay student loans, rent a home, or invest in other assets, while corporate lenders may require a loan to expand their business and introduce additional revenue streams.
SALT Lending’s Future Plans
Lending against crypto assets is still an immature market and no complete set of solutions is currently available. Regular adoption of technological updates in the blockchain and fintech world is helping the company to fully automate each aspect of the operations and scale the business to new and emerging markets.
Custody of blockchain assets is one of the main issues that needs to be addressed. No platform or solution provider is providing a user-friendly experience in this respect. According to Cohen, this year will bring a drastic change in custodial architecture, and SALT Lending will be at the forefront of this progress.
Borrowers under the cryptocurrency mechanism have no issue with respect to the comparatively high interest rate because the appreciation in value of the underlying asset is expected to indemnify the high finance charges. Sale of such underlying assets results in high amount of capital gains and, therefore, borrowing against these assets provides a more tax efficient solution for crypto investors.
The industry at present is in price discovery mode. Economic pricing policies, daily reviews, and revisions in terms of lending will help SALT Lending establish a long-term market.
Different industries and asset classes are moving to the blockchain technology. SALT Lending is on its way to creating a platform that will bring together the crypto and fiat worlds where crypto assets can be used in the normal course of business.
One target for the company is to analyze and understand the needs of its customer base and respond accordingly. One such need is to make available lines of credit backed by a crypto portfolio. The company is also continually looking to partner with investors who will bring capital to meet the ever-increasing demand for loans in the industry.

It’s an infusion of cash that the online credit card company says will allow it to expand beyond its downtown co-working space this year while doubling its workforce to 100 employees during the next two years.
The expansion decision is the result of surprisingly strong customer demand for its online-serviced, low-fee Ollo cards, Fair Square CEO Rob Habgood said. The credit cards carry a variable interest rate that currently sits at a lofty 24.99 percent.
Much of the hype around fintech focuses on what traditional banks do wrong: they’re slow to adopt new technology; they don’t center the customer; they’re too big to respond nimbly to change. This narrative is part of why fintech continues to attract massive investment, with $31 billion total flowing into the sector last year, according to KPMG.
The truth is that there’s actually a lot that banks do right — things that fintech startups can struggle to replicate. I mean, there’s a reason why they’ve been successful.
Here are the three areas where I feel fintech’s needs and banks’ expertise overlap.
The rate of credit card delinquencies jumped 52 basis points (BPS) in the first quarter (Q1) of 2018, and will likely continue to increase over the next 12 months as consumers take on more debt. That’s according to an analysis from Moody’s on Friday (May 18) after the release of the New York Federal Reserve Bank’s Household Debt and Credit Report.
The rate of new delinquencies on credit cards stood at 6.42 percent in Q1, up from 5.9 percent for the same period last year. According to Moody’s, the delinquency trend for the next year is for an “increase.” The Q1 credit card delinquency rate trails the 7.3 percent rate for auto loans but is higher than the 3.4 percent rate for residential mortgages.
Meanwhile, the rate of total new household debt delinquencies was about 4.5 percent in Q1 of 2018, “down slightly from a year ago,” Moody’s said. “Over the next year, we believe delinquencies will rise a bit as lenders modestly loosen underwriting standards.”

HSBC UK has created the “first live” use case of open banking for credit applications using the InterConnect cloud platform from Equifax.

About 150,000 Britons have lent nearly £10bn in this way over the past decade, earning around 4.5% interest on average. By contrast, the average interest rate on an easy access savings account is just 0.51%.

The High Court has sided with the Commerce Commission on how to interpret peer-to-peer lender Harmoney’s platform fees, deeming them to be credit fees and falling under the regulator’s purview.
The commission, which oversees the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003, claimed Harmoney’s platform fees were an unreasonable credit fee and sought a declaration from the court backing up its interpretation.

Jeffrey Ng, the bank’s head of group business and transaction banking, says the digital economy is the biggest trend impacting SMEs, and many of them will require assistance to adopt the technology. Ng was previously head of RHB’s SME division.

SeedInvest, one of the largest investment crowdfunding platforms in the US, has released a performance report on investor returns. SeedInvest has been in operation since 2013 following the creation of accredited crowdfunding under Title II of the JOBS Act (Reg D 506c). Since that date, SeedInvest has become a full stack crowdfunding platform offering investments in the three different crowdfunding exemptions to both accredited and non-accredited investors.
According to SeedInvest, investors on their platform have generated an unrealized Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 17.4%1 since 2013. In comparison, this number is 1.5x greater than the 11.7% median return calculated by research firm Cambridge Associates for U.S. venture capital funds of the same vintage. The term of the report was up to the end of 2017.
SeedInvest said that the top 10% of their listed investors generated an a whopping 76.86% IRR while the bottom 10% delivered a negative 7.4% IRR. SeedInvest estimated that only 1.3% of their platform investors who have invested in three or more companies have generated negative unrealized IRR.

On Thursday, specialist property finance lender LendInvest announced it has expanded on its long-term partnership with Stripe by integrated the payments platform in order to streamline its loan application process. According to the online lender, the new integration will be embedded in the primary stages of the buy-to-let loan application process. LendInvest reported:
“Stripe allows the broker to pay the valuation fee through LendInvest’s online buy-to-let portal immediately after the borrower’s application forms have been signed. This process was previously handled manually, with the case manager having to call the broker and then the borrower to arrange payment. Managing these payments centrally through LendInvest’s self-service online portal cuts down the overall time taken to complete the application, whilst providing a transparent way to track this stage of the application process.”

HSBC UK is set to capitalise on the opportunities presented by Open Banking after agreeing to a partnership with consents.online, an Account Information Service Provider (AISP).
Under the deal, HSBC can access consumer transaction data held by other organisations. The bank plans to use this information to launch new consumer products.
It will also use consents.online’s consent management architecture, which allows consumers to view and control how their data is used. The platform gives consumers and small businesses the ability to see who is accessing their data and to control access – with the power to revoke it at any time.

In particular the general obligation on an Irish corporate borrower2 to, amongst other things, withhold tax on interest payments made on the finance raised, at the standard rate (currently 20%) subject to certain exceptions, most of which will not apply where the lender is an individual, regardless of where resident.
Digital banking app Atom has launched first-time buyer products on its standalone Digital Mortgages platform.
The new loans will offer first-time home-buyers £500 cashback, along with a free valuation and no product fee. The newly-launched range will be available for mortgages between 80-95 per cent loan-to-value (LTV). The range consists of two, three and five-year fixed rates mortgages, with rates starting at 2.24 per cent.
The platform has also extended its existing range by adding 95 per cent LTV products for its purchase and remortgage products.
Furthermore, Atom has removed the £300,000 limit on first-time buyer applications and increased its maximum mortgage term from 35 to 40 years – changes meant to increase its flexibility and in line with broker feedback.
The platform will also have the Bitbose crypto loans program that will allow users to be able to receive real cash by holding to their crypto assets in a secured platform. The program offers an easy way for users to get money without having to sell their crypto assets. The program will have an easy to borrow and lend application, almost instant approval of loans and the borrower will get their cash instantly since it will be credited to borrower’s bank account. The interest rates are also competitive and do not have advance payment requirements. Another significant feature of the program is the lack of a capital block. Users of the program can withdraw their assets back anytime.

Earlier this week, France-based online lending platform Lendix announced it has appointed Luuc Mannaerts as the new CEO of Lender Nederland, Lendix’s Dutch subsidiary. According to the online lender, Mannaerts has more than 20 years of experience in the Dutch and European banking sector.

PayPal Holdings Inc. has agreed to buy European financial-technology startup iZettle AB for about $2.2 billion, a move that would catapult the U.S. digital-payments giant into hundreds of thousands of brick-and-mortar retailers around the world.

Bengaluru-based fintech startup Open Financial Technologies has raised an undisclosed amount of pre-series A funding led by Unicorn India Ventures and Recruit Co. Ltd, through its investment subsidiary RSP India Fund LLC.

The cards will be issued by First Bank & Trust of Brookings, South Dakota.
There are about 75 million Americans in the “middle market” with FICO scores ranging between 575 and 675, and many are charged high fees by sub-prime credit card issuers.
LendingPoint today announced it has closed an up to $600 million, committed credit facility arranged by Guggenheim Securities, the investment banking and capital markets division of Guggenheim Partners.
With this new deal, LendingPoint has secured up to $1.1 billion of senior credit financing in less than one year. In September 2017, the company announced it had secured an up to $500 million committed credit facility, also arranged by Guggenheim Securities.
Some 58 percent of U.S. homeowners will pay for home improvements this year, roughly the same level of interest in 2017, according to the fifth annual LightStream Home Improvement Survey. LightStream is the national online lending division of SunTrust Banks.
But spending plans tell a different story, one that works in favor of the GreenSky IPO. “The percentage of people intending to use a home improvement loan has grown 29 percent from 2017, with 54 percent more 18- to 34-year-olds planning to fund projects through home improvement financing,” the report said. “While overall, 30 percent of homeowners say they’ll pay for some portion of their 2018 project with a credit card, 16 percent fewer homeowners aged 18 to 34 plan to use them” compared to 2017.
On Tuesday, the company announced the launch of four services, all centered on attracting financial institutions to its platform. The new tools include options like Coinbase Custody, a custodian partnership similar to the custodian offerings typically provided by banks to secure customers’ cash, and Coinbase Prime, a platform centered on research and market data geared toward institutional clients.
After collaborating previously at Exeter Finance and AmeriCredit, auto finance industry veterans Mark Floyd and Kenneth Wardle are teaming up again; this time to leverage what’s happening online when consumers search for financing.
According to a news release sent to SubPrime Auto Finance News this week, Floyd and Wardle have acquired an equity stake in Horizon Digital Financial Holdings, an online auto finance technology firm located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The transaction was effective May 1.
Horizon Digital is the parent company for online consumer loan marketplace participant myAutoloan.com.
Floyd will serve as chairman and chief executive officer of Horizon Digital, and Wardle will serve as chief operating officer.

Elix is an Ethereum-based platform for payments, loans, and crowdfunding. The team is uniquely taking a mobile-first approach and focusing on usability to attract as large of a user base as possible from the start.
Elix also includes a platform, Boost, to facilitate decentralized crowdfunding campaigns using smart contracts.
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Lending
With Elix, though, both the lender and the borrower are incentivized to follow the terms of the loan. When setting up a loan, the participants can opt to include a mining period once the loan is complete to gain additional rewards. If enabled, as a lender, you must hold the ELIX in your wallet for a certain amount of time in a system similar to Proof-of-Stake. When that holding period is complete, Elix hands out the rewards in the form of a new token, Token P. This token will most likely have a different name in the future.
If the borrower pays back the loan on time, the reward is split with the lender receiving 65% and the borrower receiving 35%. If the borrower has late payments, though, the lender receives 100% of the reward.

Compound wants to let you borrow cryptocurrency, or lend it and earn an interest rate. Most cryptocurrency is shoved in a wallet or metaphorically hidden under a mattress, failing to generate interest the way traditionally banked assets do. But Compound wants to create liquid money markets for cryptocurrency by algorithmically setting interest rates, and letting you gamble by borrowing and then short-selling coins you think will sink. It plans to launch its first five for Ether, a stable coin, and a few others, by October.

While there is potential for growth and it’s an exciting opportunity, real estate crowdfunding will remain a relatively small share of the overall market. In our view, on the long-term, banks, agency lenders, life insurance companies will remain the dominant sources of financing into the market.

The Marketplace Lending Association (MLA) today announced the addition of nine new companies to the Association. The new members join as the MLA continues to expand its presence and engage with policymakers in Washington and around the country. The three new lending firms include Social Finance(SoFi), LendingPoint and College Ave. The six new Associate and Investor Council Members of the MLA include Laurel Road, Education Loan Finance (ELFI), Arcadia Funds, Victory Park Capital, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and First Associates. The MLA now has 24 active members.
Ireland-based company Pluma Technologies Ltd together with its Philippine partner Gava Technologies Inc. are raising $4M worth of Ether through a pre-sale for its TraXion tokens.
TraXion.tech Chief Executive Officer Ann Cuisia said that the company’s token sale would pave the way for TraXion to become the go-to crypto-economy for payments, peer-to-peer lending, remittances, savings, insurance, investments, and philanthropy.
The TraXion token pre-sale began last May 1, 2018 and the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) will start on June 1, 2018, respectively. TraXion tokens are currently valued at 0.001 ETH.
IDinsight, a global development analytics firm, today released its State of Aadhaar Report 2017-18 which provides data-driven insights on Aadhaar, the world’s largest biometric system. The report is based on an independent household survey covering 2947 rural households in 21 districts across three Indian states. The survey was conducted between November 2017 and February 2018.
The key highlights of the report are:
Over 96% of respondents value privacy and thought it is important to know what the government will do with their Aadhaar data. At the same time, 87% of respondents approve of mandatory linking of Aadhaar to public welfare programs.
Aadhaar’s coverage is widespread, but the data quality has room for improvement. The report finds a higher uptake of Aadhaar than voter identification cards. In addition, the report finds no evidence of differences in enrollment by gender, caste, religion, or education levels. The report highlights that 8.8% of Aadhaar-holders reported errors on their name, age, address, or other information on their Aadhaar letter. Compared to voter identification cards, the error-rate on Aadhaar was 1.5 times higher.
While exclusion from food subsidy welfare-benefits due to Aadhaar-related factors is significant, it is lower than exclusion explained by factors unrelated to Aadhaar. State capacity has a bearing on the functioning of welfare distribution, with wide variation between certain states. Overall monthly exclusion from welfare benefits ranges from 9.9% to 1.1%. Of this, Aadhaar-related factors contribute 2.2% and 0.8% respectively. Despite this, the report finds that a majority of welfare beneficiaries prefer Aadhaar-based benefits delivery in both states, as they perceive biometric authentication prevents identity fraud.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) lending, which helps people to borrow and lend money without the help of an official financial set up such as a bank as an intermediary, is expected to see huge traction in the country in the near future. It is estimated that the value of P2P lending to be generated in India over next five years will be around $4 billion (which will be 160 times the current lending size).
However, this is sum is small when compared to China where P2P lending book currently is around $100 billion, indicating the potential for exponential growth opportunity available for P2P in India. India currently has around 30 online P2P lending platforms with a current loan book of $ 25 million.
The Indian government’s $1.47 Bn (INR10,000 Cr ) Fund-of-Funds for Start-ups (FFS) , a part of the Start-up India Action Plan aimed at helping startups gather funds, isn’t seeing much action and it isn’t because of lack of trying, The Indian Express reported.
Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), which manages FFS program, has so far committed $189.3 Mn( INR 1,285 Cr) to 27 local venture capital funds under the FFS scheme, of which $20.8 Mn (INR 141 Cr) —only about 11% — has been disbursed to these funds till April 2018.
Standard Chartered Bank Taiwan Ltd (渣打台灣銀行) yesterday entered into a partnership with peer-to-peer lending operator Robo Web Technology Co (瑞保網路科技) to expand its retail banking clientele from high-net-worth individuals to the general public.

The Drive to Decentralize
The centralized approach of financial institutions controlling the people using their systems financial activities is also being challenged.
Decentralization has been key to blockchain’s growing appeal.
Private equity firms smell money in the financial advice business. Last month, Hellman & Friedman LLC paid $3 billion to buy Financial Engines Inc., an online retirement planning service. Thomas H. THE Funding Circle SME Income Fund (FCIF) has reported its first drop in net asset value since 2016 after adopting new IFRS 9 reporting standards.
The new accountancy standards mean funds have to include potential losses in their portfolio. The fund, which invests in loans originated by peer-to-peer lender Funding Circle, revealed its returns were down 0.6 per cent in April after allowing for a 1.1 per cent provision.
This was the first drop in NAV since the fund’s first monthly update in November 2015 when it was down 0.1 per cent. The NAV had been consistently positive up until last month.

Social Finance Inc., a startup looking to offer a range of banking services to millennials, is working on a credit card and is bringing in a former Citigroup Inc. executive to help oversee the initiative, said people familiar with the matter.
The San Francisco-based company hopes to offer credit cards within the next year, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. In preparation, SoFi is hiring Richard Garside to help lead the company’s operations, the people said.

OnDeck (NYSE: ONDK) today announced first quarter 2018 Gross revenue of $90 million, Net loss of $1.9 million, and Adjusted Net income of $6.4 million.
“Our first quarter results reflect a strong start to 2018 as we continue to execute on our strategic priorities to position our business for future success,” said Noah Breslow, chief executive officer, OnDeck. “We delivered 8% sequential loan growth while managing our sales and marketing costs, and had positive credit performance, as the 15+ Day Delinquency Ratio and Net Charge-off rate both improved significantly from a year ago.”
While the company posted a net loss of $1.9 million for the quarter, this was within guidance. Gross revenues were $90 million, coming in at the top end of projections for the quarter. The increase in revenue was attributable to higher interest income or the company’s effective interest yield, or EIY which came in at 35.6%, compared to 34.8% in the previous quarter. OnDeck also beat on adjusted income which came in at $6.4 million (Q1 2018 guidance was between $1 and $5 million).
Originations were up 8% from the previous quarter at $591 million.
The New York company recorded a net loss of $2 million, or 3 cents per share, versus a loss of $11 million in the same period a year ago.
OnDeck earned $5.1 in fourth quarter, its first quarterly profit in two years. In a news release Tuesday, the company said that it would have earned $6.4 million in the quarter that ended March 31 if not for charges it took to cover the costs of leases terminations New York and Denver, severance for laid-off workers and other one-time expenses. The lease terminations are expected to save the company $2 million over the next eight years.
Orchard co-founder Matt Burton has emailed industry members stating the previously announced acquisition of his company by SME lender Kabbage has formally closed. The purchase had been rumored for weeks with an official announcement hitting the press at the end of April.
Burton, and co-founder and Chief Analytics Officer David Snitkof, have both joined Kabbage in leadership roles. In total, Kabbage will add more than twenty Orchard employees who are predominantly focused on advanced analytics, data science and engineering to its New York City office.
Goldman Sachs’ consumer lending platform, Marcus, appears well on its way to becoming a full-scale digital banking offering. The platform has originated some $2.5 billion in loans since launching in October 2016, and now offers savings accounts with a minimum threshold of $1.

Continuing its strong record of growth, Cross River, a leader in the emerging Fintech industry, announced today that it has set a new monthly loan origination record of more than $600 million in April.
Cross River’s April 2018 volume represents approximately 60% growth in loan origination from April 2017, and keeps Cross River on pace to exceed $7 billion in loan originations for 2018.
MoneyGram revenue declined 2 percent year over year in the first quarter, to $380 million. That was lower than analyst expectations of about $386 million. Net income declined 19 percent, to $7.1 million, with earnings per share at $0.15 per share — below analyst expectations of $0.26.
Moneygram.com, the digital business, posted a year-over-year revenue gain of 21 percent in the first quarter, with most credit going to customer acquisitions, the company said in its financial release. Digital revenue accounted for 16 percent of all money transfer revenue in the first quarter.

Looking merely at the numbers, Zillow reported a fine quarter Monday. The Seattle company doesn’t make money. But it does grow quickly on top of a billion-dollar-plus annual-revenue clip. Square’s small business funding arm, Square Capital, made over 50,000 business loans for a total of $339 million in Q1, according to the company’s latest earnings report. That figure is a 35% increase year-over-year and puts them on pace to break last year’s $1.177B total. OnDeck, by comparison, who is arguably their top rival, made $2.11B in business loans last year.
A recent Bloomberg article discussed ratings on and the performance of MPL ABS. According to the article, ratings agencies that provide lower loss estimates on ABS transactions tend to do the most business, in part due to the “issuer paid” model. While there is no way to verify “ratings shopping” behavior, we do believe there are a few observations to share to balance the discussion.
Overall loss estimates have tended to lower with successive deals as ratings agencies gain access to longer performance histories. The securitization structures have also been extremely robust – we have seen about 10% of outstanding balance breaching triggers so far.
The market for student loans has continued to climb. According to data from CommonBond, 44 million Americans currently owe $1.4 trillion in student debt with the average student loan debt in 2016 coming in at $37,172.

We will compare OnDeck Capital to related companies based on the strength of its valuation, risk, analyst recommendations, dividends, institutional ownership, profitability and earnings.
OnDeck Capital’s competitors have higher revenue and earnings than OnDeck Capital. OnDeck Capital is trading at a lower price-to-earnings ratio than its competitors, indicating that it is currently more affordable than other companies in its industry.
While interest rates may be high, this is necessary to manage the overall portfolio risk. Elevate’s default rate is pegged at around 23% – which is quite a bit higher than a prime credit provider. The online lender recently announced their Q1 results and there services are booming. Elevate more than quadrupled year-over-year net income with 24% revenue growth and new customer growth of 32%. So they must be doing something right.
Better Mortgage, a digital mortgage company working to improve access to home financing through transparency, honest guidance and zero commissions, today announced that it has hired Howard Katzenberg as Chief Financial Officer.
Xconomy is reporting that Austin, Texas-based Student Loan Genius has raised $4.7 million in funding. The news was seconded by Austin Business Journal, which added that 11 investors have participated in the round. Both reports – as well as a third from AmericanInno, are based at least in part on a SEC Form D filing, which suggests that the $4.7 million was part of a larger $5.8 million fundraising initiative. As reported, the new capital more than doubles Student Loan Genius’ total equity funding to more than $7 million.
On Monday, a federal district court judge in the District of Columbia issued an order dismissing a lawsuit brought by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) regarding a proposal of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to issue federal charters to certain Fintech firms. In dismissing the case, US District Court Judge Dabney L. Friedrich held the CSBS did not have standing to sue because the OCC had not yet officially decided to issue charters to Fintech companies. Judge Friedrich explained that the CSBS lacks standing to bring the suit because the harms it alleges are “contingent on whether the OCC charters” a Fintech company, and “[s]everal contingent and speculative events must occur before the OCC” issues such a charter.

Peer-to-peer lender RateSetter has joined the panel of Finsure and LoanKit, giving accredited brokers access to its personal and green loan solutions.
As of this month (1 May), more than 1,400 brokers accredited with aggregators Finsure and LoanKit will be able to offer their clients personal loans and green loan products from the growing retail lender.
A report published in March 2017 by a House of Lords committee estimated that 1.7m adult British residents have no bank account; 40% of the working-age population have less than £100 ($140) in cash savings; and 31% show signs of financial distress.
In Britain such lenders include pawnbrokers, offering an APR of between 25% and 101% for a secured loan; doorstep lenders such as Provident, the biggest, which will charge an APR of 1,558% for a 13-week loan; “payday lenders” such as Wonga, which offer similar rates for a loan to be repaid after 1-35 days in one lump sum; and “rent-to-own” lenders, such as BrightHouse, which offer finance for purchases to be repaid in installments.

The first wave started a decade ago with the rise of online stockbroking platforms, which brought down dealing costs and sparked a wave of DIY investing. Then came the rise of robo-advisers – a rather daft term to describe what are in effect online wealth managers or advisers.
Now a second wave of new entrants has hit the market. Some big players have launched their own robo products, chief among them being private banks such as UBS and Investec – trusted brands with a great investment pedigree. They tend to focus on wealthier clients, however. Investec has a minimum investment of £10,000, while for UBS it’s £15,000. Another big player is IG and its Smart Portfolio, which has lower fees and a minimum investment of £500 per portfolio. Alongside these sit smaller companies such as Moneybox, Wealthify and Moola. The latest platform, Exo, launched just this week.
WeLab, Hong Kong’s home-grown fintech unicorn, is poised to be among the first batch of companies to apply for a virtual banking license from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, according to its co-founders.
In the coming weeks, the HKMA is due to issue guidelines for virtual banking regulation based on a consultation in February.

Why it’s hot:Lu.com, also known as Lufax, is one of China’s largest online lenders and is tipped for an IPO this year.
Whizcoin is the latest entrant to the world of digital currencies. Peer-to-peer lending stocks could benefit if more borrowers look to bypass the banks, but most on ASX are too small and speculative for portfolio investors. Big fintech payment providers, such as Afterpay Touch Group, are a better bet but look fully valued after recent price gains.
ME, the online lender has decided to raise the interest rate on its variable rate mortgages because it says funding costs have risen. ME is not the first bank to do this, nevertheless the lender hiked its standard variable rate for owner-occupier, principal and interest borrowers. Jamie McPhee CEO of the online lender said higher funding costs and increased regulatory compliance were the main reasons behind its decision to hike rates.
Funding costs are rising
Mr MchPee says over the last few months the bank has seen funding costs steadily rise in response to US interest rates that have been passed on to short term Australian interest rates. Simultaneously, regulatory requirements and industry reforms means that compliance costs are rising as well. ME’s decision follows on the heels of Suncorp which raised its rates in March and also cited higher funding costs as the reason behind its decision.

CredoLab, a Singapore-based fintech provider of mobile-based alternative credit scoring solutions for banks, consumer finance companies, and retailers, announced on Thursday it secured a $1 million investment from established global venture capital firm Walden International. The Aperture Business Model
Aperture was formed in the year 2016 by three co-founders: Andrew Jewett, Rudy Cortes, and Matt Miles to monetize the opportunity in real estate through creation of a large national fix and flip investor and lender. The company is focused on two things:
Buying residential properties to renovate and resell (“flips”) and
Making loans to other property investors (“investor loans”).
The company bridges the gap for fix-and-flip investors by offering short-term loans for fix and flip, bridge, rehabilitation, or rental purposes. The main focus are homes that do not qualify for traditional lending. The company provides a quick and convenient way to finance property to borrowers with low interest rates and reasonable up-front fees as compared to its competitors. It also helps home owners to sell their houses at best possible prices. Availability of advanced features like ACH payments, interest-only payments, certainty of close, no minimum credit score requirements and a dedicated team of underwriters are some of the core areas of competencies which differentiates Aperture from its competitors.
As a direct buyer, Aperture looks for affordably priced real estate in need of repairs. The aim is to fix it and resell to end users for profit. The company partners with local contractors to determine the scope of repairs and review the work performed.
The Technology Behind It All
The company has developed its fully integrated proprietary loan origination software (LOS) to handle property management services and reporting. The entire workflow of loans is managed through the software.
Borrowers can apply for property loans through the company’s website, which is interactive and intuitive. They are required to register on the company’s web portal and fill the information in terms of basic borrower data, property facts, and amount of loan requested. The loan process is not completely reliant on technology for the assessment of the proposal. The company will also do a manual review to perform the due diligence on a proposed loan. Aperture strives to close each project loan within a period of five to 10 working days.
The company does not focus on saturated states like California, Nevada, Florida, and Arizona. It will instead concentrate on capturing a higher quantum of deals at a higher percentage rates. This reduces its cost of acquisition per client and will also ensure higher margins.
Aperture is one of the only lenders that is also a property investor. This allows the company to provide additional benefits to borrowers by referring profitable deals to them in which the company has skin in the game. The company targets experienced investors, real estate agents, and contractors wishing to build a portfolio of two to 20 investment properties.
Fundraising Through Property Coin
Aperture is actively lending and is targeting to achieve a portfolio of $180 million in the next 12 months. Head of Loan Operations Dan Goldman helped build another originator to $55 million in monthly originations in just 15 months. The company, to date, is self-funded.
Aperture is also looking to raise $50 million through an ICO. Launching a 100% asset backed coin called Property Coin, they provide investors fractional interest in all real estate purchased by Aperture. The company has also filed a Reg D and Reg S for the purpose of fundraising. Half of the profits from the investments and loans will flow to the coin holders. The token is a way to securitize the real estate assets while giving crypto holders an opportunity to diversify into an asset-backed coin.
Trends and Future Goals
According to the founders, availability of financing to property investors has increased in the last three years. The residential investment market was previously dominated by “mom & pop” investors (who usually own less than 10 houses). On the other hand, attractive market returns and higher margins, as compared to traditional lending, are attracting institutional investors to jump into the market. These trends show that the industry is at a pivot point, and Aperture is at the right place and the right time to grab hold of this opportunity.
The company has generated 50 percent unleveraged returns on its investments. That, along with the management’s experience in real estate and loan origination industries, is a big positive. By incorporating the blockchain, the company has created an investment vehicle that will be attractive to multiple sections of the investor base. Property Coin is a safe bet for those taking their first steps into the crypto space. The coin can also be attractive to institutional players looking for a stable crypto asset in their portfolio with strong cash flows and a tangible underlying asset.
The company’s biggest competitor is Lending Home founded in 2013. Finance of America is another player in this segment and was formed in 2017 with the merger of B2R Finance and Jordan Capital Finance offering residential rehab fix-and-flip loans, single rental home loans, and blanket loans. It is also a portfolio company of the private equity giant, Blackstone.
Lima One is another strong contender, offering services to residential real estate investors with a funding period of 15 to 45 days. The company was formed in 2010 and has funded over $200 million with more than 720 residential deals up through 2017.
The Aperture Founding Team
All three founders were part of the senior management team at Wedgewood, one of the largest fix-and-flip investors in the US. Jewett and Miles were co-heads of the capital markets division. Both also worked previously at RBS Securities. Cortes was the head of fix-and-flip operations at Wedgewood and has previous experience at Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services, Inc.

SoFi is more like a bank, but not a bank. AT: “This is great news, but Americans don’t seem much interested in challenger banks. Maybe this will change as larger companies like SoFi and Marcus attempt to make it popular. I hope they succeed.”
The U.S. economy is in a good place, growing at a healthy rate of nearly 3% annually, and the unemployment rate is around 4%. So it’s perhaps surprising that credit card balances are growing in 20 of the 30 largest U.S. metros while declining in nine with one city unchanged.
The changes in credit card balances range from a 9% increase in Miami to a 6% drop in San Francisco.
Miami led the 30 largest metros by far with a 9% annual increase. Pittsburgh was No. 2 at a nearly 6% rise with New York and Chicago both just above 5%.

While the merits of the proposed fintech national banking charter continue to be debated in Washington, online nonbank business lenders haven’t been circling in a holding pattern over Reagan National Airport.
Case in point: The business of lending isn’t lending, but getting paid back, said Andrea Gellert, chief revenue officer at OnDeck, the largest online small business lender in the U.S.
Pro’s and cons of alternative data
One of the criticisms of traditional credit bureaus is that they have typically relied on backward-looking, historical data. One of the elements of fintech lenders has been use of alternative indicators intended to give a glimpse of the future.
“Alternative data sources have been proven to work to predict credit,” said Luke Voiles, director at QuickBooks Capital, which lends to users of Quicken’s accounting software. (Currently the company caps loans as $50,000.) The input the firm can access provides a strong picture of how a business is doing and may be doing in the future. Gellert said that as loans grow larger, OnDeck adds in methodologies derived from behavioral economics.
Marketplace lending platforms — Lending Club, OnDeck, Prosper and the like — have inarguably and fundamentally altered the geography of the lending landscape. In the last decade, they’ve gone from being a niche product to representing about a third of unsecured consumer loan volume in the United States as of 2016, according to a recent study by Harvard Business School Professor Boris Vallée and University of Washington Professor Yao Zeng.
The really savvy investors, the study noted, aren’t merely savvy because of the knowledge they possess — but because of the technology they leverage. One popular such technology is LendingRobot’s quantitative modeling that takes in the historical data provided by the platforms and uses it to create rules of purchase — and then allows its user set it to literally auto-invest whenever it encounters a loan that meets the rules’ criteria.
Looking at a swath of loans executed by LendingRobot users between January 2014 and January 2017, with a particular focus on $120 million invested in LendingClub and Prosper during that time period, what they found is that those who used LendingRobot bought much better loans — the average default rate for LendingRobot purchases was 20 percent lower than the average default rate on the platform.
In February, BB&T Chief Executive Kelly King took to Twitter with a video apology to thousands of irate customers after an equipment malfunction hobbled ATMs, online and mobile banking. “We are committed to making this right,” he said.
On Thursday, during the Winston-Salem, N.C.-based bank’s quarterly earnings call, King revealed the bottom-line cost of the high-profile, three-day system outage: $15 million in lost revenue and an additional $5 million in noninterest expenses tied to fee waivers and other costs.
Zelle, a service that allows bank customers to instantly send money to their acquaintances, is booming. Thousands of new users sign up every day. Some $75 billion zoomed through Zelle’s network last year. That’s more than twice the amount of money that customers transferred with Venmo, a rival money-transfer app.
But the same features that make Zelle so useful for customers, its speed and ubiquity, have made it irresistible to thieves. Hackers and con artists have used the system to steal from victims — some of whom had never used Zelle or even heard of it until someone used it to clean out their bank accounts.
Speaking at LendIt Fintech 2018 Kabbage CEO Rob Frohwein talked about building a brand in the online lending space; he explained most companies think boiler rooms equal brands, he went on to say you need to spend time and money on building your company’s brand; building relationships is the key, not just credit scores and data, you need to understand what your customer wants and needs by engaging with them on a regular basis.
When it comes to getting a loan or credit card from their bank, many Americans are not so confident. A newly released study from Elevate’s Center for the New Middle Class (CNMC) found that non-prime Americans – the 2/3rds of US adults with credit scores under 700 – were significantly less likely to depend on a traditional financial institution for access to credit. Compared to individuals with prime credit scores, non-prime Americans are:
4x as likely to have been denied a loan over the last year
8x as likely to not use a bank
6x as likely to use an online-only financial institution
21% less likely to believe their financial institution has products designed for them
48% less likely to believe they would be approved for a personal loan
The non-prime are often characterized by income volatility, making it all the more necessary they have access to credit. Yet, one in 12 non-prime Americans do not even use a traditional bank for their day-to-day needs. Non-prime Americans often move to an online only bank to meet this void.
Representatives of the so-called millennial generation are approaching their mid-thirties, being the single largest segment of home buyers in America. This, undoubtedly, represents a huge opportunity for the mortgage industry.
Couple this with the fact that the American housing market (which currently stands at $26 trillion) is the largest asset class in the world – even bigger than the U.S. stock market – and it’s clear that there is certainly a huge wealth of opportunity within this sector.
When we solved for job titles, we discovered that teachers take out the most Lending Club loans with 47,761 loans issued. “Manager” and “Owner” follow, but as you’ll see in the chart below, teacher reappears (with a lower-case “t”) with another 8,777 loans issued.

UK fintech Finastra announced on Tuesday its blockchain-based solution, Fusion LenderComm, is now commercially available as an app on R3’s Corda platform for financial institutions operating in the syndicated lending market. The launch was announced at the LSTA Operations Conference in New York. Finastra reported that following a pilot, the solution is proven to streamline information exchange between agent banks and lenders, driving transparency and efficiency in the syndicated loan market.
Fusion LenderComm is now available as a “low-cost” service for financial services institutions acting as agent banks, using Fusion Loan IQ, a syndicated loan servicing platform. However, the Fusion LenderComm platform is an open utility for all institutions involved in syndicated lending, regardless of the loan servicing software in use.

Capital Float, the fintech startup that says it is India’s largest online lender, announced today that it has raised $22 million in new funding from Amazon. At the end of last year, reports surfaced that Amazon was considering an investment in Capital Float as an extension of its $45 million Series C, which was announced last August. The Bangalore-based startup confirmed to TechCrunch that Amazon’s investment is indeed an extension of that round and brings the total equity it has raised over the past 12 months to $67 million.
Over the same period, Capital Float also raised $80 million of debt from banks and other financial companies, which it combines with its own balance sheet to finance loans to small businesses and other borrowers. Amazon India is among several e-commerce platforms that the company has partnered with to provide loans to sellers, including Snapdeal and Shopclues.

Seven marketplace lending securitizations priced this quarter totaling $4.3 Bn, the 2nd highest level of quarterly issuance, representing 34% growth YoY. To date, cumulative issuance equals $33.4 Bn across 114 deals.

Spreads tightened this quarter, amidst rising rates and increased volatility, and we saw deals price at record tights. Average spreads at
issuance are tighter in the consumer and student spaces across credit tranches. New issue spreads in the Consumer MPL space on As were tighter by 27 bps and those on Cs were tighter by 107 bps on average. New issue spreads in the Student MPL space were also tighter across the stack, with the Cs seeing a nearly 100bp tightening on average.
SoFi issued the largest consumer and student deals ever seen in the MPL space. SoFi continues to increase deal sizes every quarter with a billion-dollar student deal in 1Q18.
Frohwein noted that there are multiple ways that companies can fail when trying to expand their offerings.
1.Trying too long a stretch.
By way of example, Frohwein pointed out that Prosper Marketplace, which offers three- or five-year personal and business loans, tried an expansion in 2016 called Prosper Daily.
2.Cheaping out on brand promotion.
Another error is failing to spend money on the company’s brand. Interestingly, given that the fintech fraternity is a crowd attuned to social media, Frohwein urged listeners to invest real money in their brands. (@KabbageInc, the corporate Twitter handle, has 23,400 followers, while @KabbageRob, Frohwein’s own account, has fewer than 2,000 followers.)
3.Developing customer knowledge.
Frohwein said that all those data connections referred to earlier give Kabbage a strong idea of what its customers look like. Few online lenders have that depth of customer knowledge, he said.
“In some cases, we saw in the fintech ecosystem that one of their challenges is the size, scale and complexity of a company like JPMorgan Chase. If you’re trying to build out something in the wholesale payment ecosystem, you’re talking about 200 regulators, $5 trillion dollars we process a day, over 120 currencies and countries. There are multiple layers of complexities considering anti-money laundering rules, fraud requirements and new sanctions. How do you understand that complexity if I’m a startup in the payment space in wholesale?”
These companies could later wind up with an investment from JPMorgan if all goes well.

New Resource Bank in San Francisco is working with a fintech firm to reach underserved small-business clients.
The $349 million-asset company has been offering asset-based loans to companies with at least $1 million in annual revenue through a partnership with P2Binvestor in Denver, known as P2Bi, since late 2017.
According to PitchBook Data, family offices did $100.6 billion in deals in 2016, compared with $25.1 billion in 2011. These family offices are seeking opportunities that offer better returns than the public market and, therefore, investing in startup companies through longer-term private equity deals.
What Family Offices Get Wrong When They Try to Invest in Startups Alone
In emerging markets, family offices can face a number of challenges when they try to invest in startups.
Most family offices don’t possess specialized knowledge of startups, because the startup ecosystems in emerging markets are very different from the traditional business climate that family offices are used to. Because of limited experience and exposure, they may not always have a comprehensive list of questions or resources at their disposal that would aid them in the decision-making process or to evaluate a deal.
The peer-to-peer investor’s 2018 Direct Lending Report found direct lenders – which include P2P platforms – facilitated more than £4.5bn of lending in 2017, with the ‘big four’ – Zopa, Funding Circle, RateSetter and LendInvest – making up two thirds.
But loanbook growth at the biggest lenders was up just six per cent last year, while mid-sized lenders saw their lending grow 50 per cent to £1.6bn, according to the report.
The report also looked at the performance of P2P and alternative finance-focused investment trusts, finding that if you had invested the same amount in the main funds – P2P Global Investment, Ranger Direct Lending, VPC Specialty Lending, SQN Secured Income Fund and Honeycomb – last year, you would be down 1.69 per cent.
ArchOver, the UK P2P business lending platform, aims to bridge the funding gap to enable businesses to continue to grow while waiting for their R&D tax claim to be repaid. ArchOver’s Research & Development Advance (RDA) service is reportedly the first provided by a P2P lender funding advances upward of £100,000.
According to ArchOver, only 1.67 percent of national income is currently being spent on R&D compared to an average of over 2 percent across the EU. Government initiatives have been put in place to encourage further investment in innovation in the UK. Under the current system, UK businesses can claim cash repayments of up to 33 percent of their R&D expenditure, but it can take up to six months to receive payment from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). ArchOver aims to help qualifying companies to bridge this gap, and connect them with the money they need to invest in the products and services of the future.
UK-based peer-to-peer lender Landbay is set to close its latest equity crowdfunding campaign on Seedrs later this evening with more than £1.6 million from nearly 285 investors. The funding round was launched last month and quickly secured its initial £1.25 million funding target.

Unlike these other firms, we offer loans in the range of 20,000 to 200,000 RMB to middle class consumers with a stable income. These are borrowers who are upgrading their social class for a better life. The second part of the regulations restricts financial institutions like banks from providing funds to fintech companies, but we do not rely on any financial institutions. All of our fund sourcing is from individuals. Our company is part of the Beijing Internet Finance Association, which alerts us to upcoming regulations. The China Banking Regulatory Commission governs the P2P industry. Government registration for P2P companies is mandatory this year. Those that fail the process will be shut down. The number of competitors will become smaller.
