KBRA Assigns Preliminary Ratings to SoFi Consumer Loan Program 2018-2 (Business Wire), Rated: AAA

Kroll Bond Rating Agency (KBRA) assigns preliminary ratings to four classes of notes issued by SoFi Consumer Loan Program 2018-2 (“SCLP 2018-2”). This is a $544.6 million consumer loan ABS transaction.

This transaction represents SoFi Lending Corp.’s (“SoFi” or the “Company”) 14th rated securitization collateralized by a portfolio of unsecured consumer loans. SoFi currently originates personal loans through its state licenses or complies with certain requirements where a state lending license is not required.

DV01’S Q1 SECURITIZATION VOLUME TOPS $ 2.58B, ENCOMPASSING NINE DEALS FROM SIX ORIGINATORS (DV01), Rated: AAA

dv01 closed out Q1 with nine new securitizations, totaling $2.58 billion in total issuance. This represents a 141% increase from last year’s Q1 volume, which totaled $1.07 billion.

Deals were originated by six different lenders, including Prosper, Upgrade, LendingClub, CommmonBond, SoFi, and Marlette. Amazon could become the third-biggest US bank if it wants to: Bain study (CNBC), Rated: AAA

Amazon could rival the nation’s big banks in as few as five years, capitalizing off its digital prowess and massive consumer base, according to a Bain & Company report.

Pushing customers toward a co-branded banking account also allows Amazon to cut down on transaction costs, Bain said.

Amazon could – according to Bain calculations – avoid more than $250,000,000 in credit card interchange fees every year if finds a bank willing to partner on checking accounts.

Why Amazon won’t enter the advice market (Investment News), Rated: A

Despite what many see as the inevitability of tech giants entering the financial advice business, the economics of doing so — as well as the intensely regulated nature of the business — make their entry unlikely, according to a new report from Cerulli.

The Boston-based research firm says that “companies like Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google (FAANGs) have the tools and data to excel, but face significant obstacles that will likely preclude their entry,”

One major obstacle, Cerulli says, is the relatively small size of the market. The firm estimates that the “digital advice opportunity segment” represents only about 12% of investors, or a segment “that would be difficult to scale to be of strategic interest to the world’s largest technology providers.”

A new study casts a pall over efforts to build the Sarasota and Manatee population of this prized demographic. Out of the largest 100 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas in the country, Sarasota-Manatee ranked dead last among cities favored by millennial homebuyers.

The study, conducted by LendingTree, focused on the percentages of all loan requests to the online loan marketplace that came from millennials. That figure for Sarasota fell far from top-ranked Des Moines, Iowa — 17.9 percent versus 42.4 percent. Fort Myers ranked just above Sarasota, with 19.8 percent.

SunTrust teams with fintech to offer loans for HVAC upgrades (American Banker), Rated: B

SunTrust Banks in Atlanta is teaming up with another fintech upstart to expand its reach in consumer lending.

The $202 billion-asset company said Wednesday that it has struck a partnership with the online lender Microf to offer point-of-sale loans to homeowners looking to replace aging residential heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

SunTrust will hold the loans on its books and a pay a fee to Microf for the referrals. Microf, based in Albany, Ga., offers the loans through its nationwide network of HVAC contractors.

Revolut unleashes open API to all customers (Fintech Futures), Rated: AAA

APIs and open banking are hotter than a freshly tarmacked road in summer, and Revolut joins the mad-for-it crowd.

On its blog, the bank, which was launched in mid-2015 and offers a money transfer app, says account owners can generate sandbox and production keys, and set whitelisted IPs as an “extra layer of security”.

Away from these API days, the firm adds that over the last few months it’s been making updates to its business accounts.

New fintech fund could boost P2P sector (Peer2Peer Finance), Rated: A

At a time when investment trusts such as Victory Park Capital Specialty Lending have signalled a shift away from P2P opportunities, Augmentum Fintech’s investment adviser has hinted that P2P lenders could be included in the portfolio.

Augmentum Fintech was launched by Augmentum Capital, a venture capital (VC) firm backed by Lord Rothschild’s RIT Capital Partners, last month. The VC firm already had a 7.4 per cent holding in P2P giant Zopa worth £18.5m that has been transferred into the investment company portfolio and its founder Tim Levene, who is acting as investment adviser to Augmentum Fintech, said that the firm is well geared to the P2P sector.

FCA reveals it intervened in Collateral administration to protect investors (Peer2Peer Finance News) Rated: A

THE FINANCIAL Conduct Authority (FCA) has revealed that it intervened in the administration of Collateral because the peer-to-peer lender failed to seek its approval when it appointed an insolvency practitioner.

Wigan-based Refresh Recovery was selected by Collateral when the company shut down in February but it was revealed on Tuesday that the City watchdog was looking to appoint a different administrator.

“The Collateral companies were required to obtain the approval of the FCA when appointing an administrator,” the FCA said in a statement on Wednesday.

ISA countdown: The latest IFISAs on the market (Peer2Peer Finance News), Rated: A

March saw the introduction of tax wrappers from peer-to-peer property platforms The House Crowd and Safe as Houses, while EasyMoney, part of Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou’s easy family of brands, launched its second IFISA offering.

Safe as Houses

The Safe As Houses ISA, which invests in loans made to Safe as Houses Group to develop, regenerate and sell on distressed properties, offers investors a return of six per cent.

The IFISA has a five-year term and requires a minimum investment of £5,000.

The House Crowd

The House Crowd’s IFISA invests in secured P2P loans and property development investments and offers a target return of seven per cent.

The House Crowd requires a minimum investment of £1,000, and new investments can be added to the IFISA in £1,000 increments, up to a maximum of £20,000 across an investor’s entire ISA portfolio.

Investors will get a fixed return paid in twice a year in October and April.

EasyMoney

The latest IFISA to hit the market before the deadline came from EasyMoney, offering target returns of 7.28 per cent. This eclipses the 4.03 per cent returns offered by its first product that launched in February.

The P2P lending platform said its new ‘balanced’ IFISA allows individuals to invest in a broader range of property-backed loans, limited to 75 per cent loan-to-value (LTV).

Only the peer to peer lending element can be included in an innovative Isa, not the equity version where investors take a stake in a company.

Obviously, innovative Isas don’t qualify for the savings element of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme that protects up to £85,000 per licensed bank.

Crucially, however, neither do they get the FSCS investing element that covers up to £50,000 in case your investing platform goes bust and hasn’t done what it is meant to with your money.

Banking at a Tipping Point as Fintech Drives Change (Cash Lady News), Rated: AAA

According to Citigroup consumer banking currently generates around $870bn in revenues across Europe and North America, with digital innovators accounting for just 5% of that total. But if the report’s predictions are correct, by 2023, disruption by fintech companies will account for 17% of a total earnings pot of $1.200bn

By partnering with banks, non-bank lenders avoid certain regulatory and licensing requirements in states where their bank partners operate.  In return, banks are able to utilize their relationships with their non-bank lending partners to generate leads for additional loans.

Colorado’s Uniform Consumer Credit Code Administrator Takes Action

In January 2017, the Colorado’s Uniform Consumer Credit Code (“UCCC”) Administrator, Julie Meade, filed two substantially similar complaints in Colorado state court against Marlette Funding, LLC, and Avant of Colorado, LLC. The complaints alleged violations of the UCCC based on the theory that Marlette and Avant were the “true lender,” not their bank partners, in a series of loans made to Colorado consumers, which loans contained interest rates that exceeded Colorado’s usury laws.

One challenge is simply the legacy infrastructure on which most financial services companies today are built. Companies that provide ERP systems like SAP or Oracle have built their systems in a batch processing world and need to also become real-time.

In the age of PayPal, Venmo and Square Cash, it’s easy to forget that most transactions that take place day-to-day aren’t happening in real time. They feel like they are, but they really just move money from one PayPal user’s balance to another. Moving that balance from PayPal’s banking partner to the customer’s own bank account is still a multiday process.

U.S. banks are not that far away from ubiquitous real-time payments, according to Ward, who said he thinks 90 percent of banks will have implemented real-time payments by the middle of 2019. PNC hasn’t met too many challenges itself trying to sell RTP, Ward said, but clients are still figuring out the best way to take advantage of it and whether they prioritize the needs of customers or suppliers.

Is community bank small business lending eroding? (Banking Exchange), Rated: AAA

Quarles, speaking March 26 at a HOPE Global Forum, told of recent meetings he had had with owners of very small businesses. He noted that their comments jibed with trends the central bank has seen. A key one is that small businesses still face gaps in available credit although more than two-thirds of those studied by the Fed request less than $100,000 and many less than $25,000.

Who’s lending to small businesses?

“Large banks’ share of small business lending has grown,” said Quarles, “especially among the smallest loans. This represents a change from 20 years ago when small businesses relied more on a relationship with local community banks for access to credit.”

Quarles shared figures for loans under $100,000. He said that small banks of less than $1 billion hold 19% of such loans—versus 60% two decades ago. By contrast, he said, that 60% share is now held by banks with $50 billion or more in assets.

Quarles next discussed nonbank alternative lenders. This included fintech specialists as well as large technology firms that extend credit to merchants who are part of their customer bases. (Quarles did not mention names, but examples of the former would include online lender Kabbage and the former would include Amazon, which grants credit to small firms that are part of its base.)

The Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (CVCA) has posted what it calls an “overview” of the VC and PE Markets in that country in 2017. It reports growth in both of those markets, although growth at distinct velocities.

In 2016 there were 542 deals in the PE space. In 2017 there were 603. In 2016 the total valuation of those deals was $13.8 billion. In 2017 nearly twice that, $26.3 billion.

Looking at exits, 2016 was a slump and 2017 was a recovery. In 2016 there were only 33 exits with a total value of $0.6 billion. In 2017, though, there were 39 exits with a total valuation of $1.7 billion. A little arithmetic indicates that the average value of one of those 2017 exits was about $43 million. The average value of one of the 2016 exits was about $18 million.

Breaking down the PE highlights by city, the paper tells us that 15% of the action (89 deals totaling $6.7 billion) went to Montreal-based companies. Companies based in Calgary and Montérègie each received a 9% share. This meant 54 deals for Calgary and 53 for Montérègie.

Breaking down the highlights by sector, 19% of the PE deals closed in industry/manufacturing. The next largest share was in information and communications technology (ICT), a 16% share. Is community bank small business lending eroding? (Banking Exchange), Rated: AAA

Quarles, speaking March 26 at a HOPE Global Forum, told of recent meetings he had had with owners of very small businesses. He noted that their comments jibed with trends the central bank has seen. A key one is that small businesses still face gaps in available credit although more than two-thirds of those studied by the Fed request less than $100,000 and many less than $25,000.

Who’s lending to small businesses?

“Large banks’ share of small business lending has grown,” said Quarles, “especially among the smallest loans. This represents a change from 20 years ago when small businesses relied more on a relationship with local community banks for access to credit.”

Quarles shared figures for loans under $100,000. He said that small banks of less than $1 billion hold 19% of such loans—versus 60% two decades ago. By contrast, he said, that 60% share is now held by banks with $50 billion or more in assets.

Quarles next discussed nonbank alternative lenders. This included fintech specialists as well as large technology firms that extend credit to merchants who are part of their customer bases. (Quarles did not mention names, but examples of the former would include online lender Kabbage and the former would include Amazon, which grants credit to small firms that are part of its base.)

THE VC AND PE MARKETS IN CANADA (AllAboutAlpha), Rated: AAA

The Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (CVCA) has posted what it calls an “overview” of the VC and PE Markets in that country in 2017. It reports growth in both of those markets, although growth at distinct velocities.

In 2016 there were 542 deals in the PE space. In 2017 there were 603. In 2016 the total valuation of those deals was $13.8 billion. In 2017 nearly twice that, $26.3 billion.

Looking at exits, 2016 was a slump and 2017 was a recovery. In 2016 there were only 33 exits with a total value of $0.6 billion. In 2017, though, there were 39 exits with a total valuation of $1.7 billion. A little arithmetic indicates that the average value of one of those 2017 exits was about $43 million. The average value of one of the 2016 exits was about $18 million.

Breaking down the PE highlights by city, the paper tells us that 15% of the action (89 deals totaling $6.7 billion) went to Montreal-based companies. Companies based in Calgary and Montérègie each received a 9% share. This meant 54 deals for Calgary and 53 for Montérègie.

Breaking down the highlights by sector, 19% of the PE deals closed in industry/manufacturing. The next largest share was in information and communications technology (ICT), a 16% share. The report tells us that both of these two top sectors “have been receiving a steadily increasing share of PE deal flow since 2013 when industrial and manufacturing captured only a 14% share” and ICT got 10%.

New York Federal Reserve: Fintech Has Improved the Mortgage Lending Market (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: A

The New York Federal Reserve has published a staff report pertaining to “The Role of Technology in Mortgage Lending”.

Do the Majority of Americans Really ‘Want’ to Use a Branch? (The Financial Brand), Rated: AAA

According to research conducted by Novantas, 60% of Americans said they would rather open a new checking account in person at a bank branch than on a phone, tablet or desktop computer. Reinforcing this finding is the reality that most consumers still only use digital channels for the most basic banking functions, such as checking account balances and transferring funds. For more complicated issues, like problems with an account or advice, most consumers prefer human contact.

The reliance on branches in North America is almost double other countries, where better digital offerings have been introduced. In fact, according to Novantas, 75% of consumers in Australia report visiting the branch less than once per month, or even less! The UK is very similar while, interestingly, only about half of US consumers exhibit the same behavior.


The banking industry has seen the closure of 1,700 branches in the 12 months ending in June 2017 – the largest one-year decline on record. Capital One Financial Corp. has cut 32% of its branches from mid-2012 to mid-2017, while SunTrust Banks Inc. cut 22% and Regions Financial Corp. has cut 12%.

ATTORNEY GENERAL HERRING OBTAINS FULL RESTITUTION FOR CUSTOMERS OF ONLINE LENDER (Virginia.gov), Rated: A

Attorney General Mark Herring announced today that his office has reached a settlement with eight affiliated online lenders and debt collectors to resolve allegations that the companies offered unlawful open-ended credit plan loans and engaged in unlawful debt collection practices including contacting borrowers’ employers and implementing wage garnishments. As a result of the settlement, borrowers will receive nearly $150,000 in restitution and forgiven debt.

The settlement includes the following key terms relating to loans made by the lenders during the period from January 2015 through June 19, 2017:

  • The Lenders agree to refund all interest and fees paid by consumers in excess of 12% of the loan amount, totaling approximately $85,000;
  • The Lenders agree to forgive all outstanding remaining debt of Virginia consumers, totaling over $63,000;
  • The Lenders agree to a permanent injunction against consumer lending activity in Virginia;
  • The Debt Collectors agree to a permanent injunction against all debt collection activity in Virginia;
  • The Lenders agree to pay $10,000 in civil penalties and $10,000 in attorneys’ fees;
  • The Debt Collectors agree to pay $75,000 in civil penalties and $10,000 in attorneys’ fees.

The companies include six lenders (Field Asset Service Team, LLC; VIM Holdings, LLC; MR Capital Group, LLC; Nascent Holdings, LLC; B Financial, LLC; and DTS Capital, LLC, collectively “the Lenders”) and two debt collectors (Bradley Goldberg & Miller, LLC and U Solutions Group, LLC, “the Debt Collectors”) that acted in concert to provide and collect open-end credit plan loans made over the Internet to Virginia consumers.

The Lenders offered open-end credit plan loans and imposed “service fees” as high as $160 per month. The Debt Collectors then emailed consumers in an effort to collect on these loans and contacted the consumers’ employers to implement wage assignments and collect money directly from the consumers’ paychecks.

Brexit to shut the door on lengthy London house price boom (Euronews), Rated: A

British inflation will outstrip gains in house prices this year and next, particularly in the capital, as uncertainty over Brexit and weak consumer spending power hits demand, a Reuters poll found on Friday.

Next year, house prices will rise 0.9 percent in London and 2.0 nationally, still both below the 2.1 percent expected inflation rate. In 2020, London prices will increase 2.0 percent and by 2.3 percent nationally.

“Quite simply, with loan-to-income ratios for first time buyers sitting at around four times, average salaries of 33,000 pounds ($46,000), and your average flat in London costing over 500,000 pounds, it’s extremely difficult to see how London can be viewed as anything but very expensive,” LendInvest’s Lockhart said.

Hang Seng Bank deploys fintech to simplify mobile banking, mulls use of facial recognition at ATMs (SCMP), Rated: A

Hang Seng Bank plans to expand the use of fintech to mobile banking services and is also toying with the idea of incorporating facial recognition, after initial success with iPhone X, to allow customers to withdraw cash from its ATMs across the city, according to its chief executive.

The global facial recognition market is forecast to be worth US$6.5 billion by 2021, up from US$2.3 billion in 2016, according to estimates from research company Technavio.

Revolut said Monday that it had broken even for the first time in December, and that its monthly transaction volume surged to $1.5 billion, an increase of over 700 percent in the last 12 months.

The start-up has signed up a total of 1.5 million users to its mobile app, up 50 percent from a figure it achieved in November.

The 10-K filing referred to cryptocurrencies, without naming any specific one, three times under a subsection titled “Risk Factors” and described three different ways in which they could pose problems for the bank’s business.

The first reference was under geopolitical risks, with the bank talking about international money-laundering.

The third reference was along similar lines, with BoA saying: “The widespread adoption of new technologies, including internet services, cryptocurrencies and payment systems, could require substantial expenditures to modify or adapt our existing products and services as we grow and develop our internet banking and mobile banking channel strategies in addition to remote connectivity solutions,” adding it “might not be successful in developing or introducing” competing products at lower prices.

CoAssets Reports Half-Year Results With 471% Increase In Revenue (AsiaOne), Rated: AAA

CoAssets Limited (“CoAssets” or the “Group”) (ASX: CA8), a leading crowdfunding platform and Fintech lender specialising in facilitating funding for businesses reported its financial and operating results for the half year ended 31 December 2017, together with an update on the Group’s growth and capital strategy to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on 22 February 2018.

Total reported revenue increased by 471% from S$446,040 in 2016 to S$2,547,554 in 2017. Group’s profits in year 2017 was S$2,046,013, from a loss of S$3,899,325 in 2016. This increase in profits was due to business activities as well as investment gains. Operating expenses decreased from S$3,570,287 in 2016 to S$2,577,013 in 2017. This represents about S$1million or 28% in cost savings. Registered investor base reached 433,805 as at 31 December 2017. This represents an 88.17% increase from 30 June 2017.

After receiving the Capital Market Services (CMS) licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in June 2017, the company crowdfunded more than S$5.11million worth of deals from 1 July 2017 to 31 December 2017.

Blockchain and financial services disruption (Punch), Rated: AAA

Key areas of the financial services that are most likely to be affected by blockchain include transfers, payment and lending. We have seen different start-ups such as OneFi, Inspire, Upstart, and Funding Circle, playing critical roles in peer- to -peer lending and services to individuals.

The closest we have seen so far is what VoguePay, a leading online payment start-up, has done.

It recently launched a multi-currency payment platform to enable businesses to send and receive payment from local and international customers, allowing merchants to accept payment in dollars, Euros, Rands, Cedis, Naira and Bitcoin payment.

The average Nigerian bank pays about five per cent interest rate on fixed deposits while requesting for two-digit interest rates on loans from customers. Economically, this does not make much sense because the margin is too wide when compared to what they offer for holding customers’ fund. Many people are tired of the highly monopolistic nature of banking.
