SoFi held talks to acquire a fintech company backing some of the hottest robo advisors as it eyes expansion beyond its lending roots (Business Insider), Rated: AAA

OnDeck Q4 2018 Earnings Review (Lend Academy), Rated: AAA

The company achieved much of what they set to do in 2018 and posted another solid quarter as they rounded out the year. Q4 2018 net income came in at $14 million on gross revenues of $109.5 million. The company ended the year with a total of $27.7 million in net income. Below is a snapshot of their Q4 and 2018 full year highlights.

As of Q4 2018 the company still had $246 million of excess debt capacity.

BB&T and SunTrust merger; Tech in Bank Earnings (PeerIQ), Rated: AAA

The Fed’s January 2019 Senior Loan Officer Survey showed that banks tightened standards for commercial real estate (CRE) loans. Overall, banks tightened standards for credit card borrowers. However, lending standards for most categories of consumer loans and C&I loans remained unchanged. Banks also reported weaker demand for both business and household loans.

BB&T agreed to buy SunTrust for $28.2 Bn – the first major mega-bank deal in a decade. This deal will create the sixth-largest US retail bank. The M&A is supported by a constructive regulatory environment fostered by the OCC and CFPB, among others. The previous large acquisition was the JP Morgan acquisition of Bank One in 2004.

A major motivation for the deal was the ability of both banks to pool resources to build better digital offerings. SunTrust has a FinTech focused fund and has partnered with FinTech lenders to provide home improvement and small business loans. Banks are investing billions in digital tech spend to maintain relevance with customers that are increasingly eschewing bank branches for a seamless, online, full-service banking and wealth management customer experience.

Auto Loans in High Gear (Liberty Street Economics), Rated: AAA

Total household debt increased modestly, by $32 billion, in the fourth quarter of 2018, according to the latest Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit from the New York Fed’s Center for Microeconomic Data. Although household debt balances have been rising since mid-2013, their sluggish growth in the fourth quarter was mainly due to a flattening in the growth of mortgage balances. Auto loans, which have been climbing at a steady clip since 2011, increased by $9 billion, boosted by historically strong levels of newly originated loans. In fact, 2018 marked the highest level in the nineteen-year history of the loan origination data, with $584 billion in new auto loans and leases appearing on credit reports, up in nominal terms from 2017’s $569 billion. In this post, we take a closer look at the composition and performance of outstanding auto loan debt using the New York Fed’s Consumer Credit Panel (CCP), which is based on anonymized Equifax credit data and also the source for the Quarterly Report.

Amazon’s lending perpetuates the tech giant’s control over small businesses (Tearsheet), Rated: AAA

Amazon runs a marketplace with 2.5 million sellers, 24,000 of which had more than $1 million in sales on the platform in 2018. These sellers represent the potential customer base for the company’s lending model.

From this base of borrowers, Amazon has been able to reportedly lend over $1 billion in 2017, exceeding  $3 billion in total lending volume from its inception in 2011 to 2017. As for 2018, in its annual report, the company reported receivables outstanding from their lending program of $710 million, up from $692 million a year prior.

With access to detailed information and data on each seller, Amazon is able to mitigate lending risk substantially. Seller metrics only available to Amazon are utilized to determine a small business’s creditworthiness. Sales history, product offerings, customer service feedback, and shipping metrics enable Amazon’s lending business to have better insight into how to accurately issue loans. This allows Amazon to have an understanding of the health of each small business on its seller marketplace.

Goldman Sachs, Point72 and others invest $ 44 million in business credit startup Nav (Reuters), Rated: A

Nav, a startup that gives small businesses free access to their credit reports, said on Monday that it had raised $44 million from investors including Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N), Point72 Ventures and Experian Ventures (EXPN.L).

Well Fargo Outage Points to Opportunity in Digital Banking (Lend Academy), Rated: A

Wells Fargo is still digging out from a PR disaster last week when the bank went offline for a large segment of customers due to a fire alarm triggered in a server facility in Minnesota. Customers could not access the mobile app, the website or ATMs. The incident has been used to highlight how big an opportunity there is for fintech firms or more nimble banks.

What the outage shows is that bank infrastructure is still stuck in the past, analysts rightly askedwhy Wells Fargo did not have the bank running on a cloud based system.

Digital bank Chime seemed to benefit from the news with more than 10,000 accounts being opened, a record 24 hour period for the startup.

new survey by Fraedom says 80 percent of banks believe challengers have impacted their business and 30 percent say they are their biggest threat.

Susan Ehrlich of Earnest (Lend Academy), Rated: A

Our next guest on the Lend Academy Podcast is Susan Ehrlich, the CEO of Earnest. They are one of the largest student loan refinancers in the country and they also offer personal loans. Back in 2017 Earnest was acquired by the student loan servicer Navient which was itself spun out from Sallie Mae in 2014.

Government Shutdown Slows SBA Lending Volume, Approval Percentage Dipped Slightly in January (GlobeNewswire), Rated: A

Business loan approval rates dropped three-tenths of a percent at regional and community banks in December 2018. Small bank approvals dropped a full percentage point from 49.9% in December 2018 to 48.9% in January.

Small business loan approval rates for big banks remained at a record high 27% in January 2019, according to the Biz2Credit Small Business Lending Index, which examines more than 1,000 small business credit applications made via its online lending platform.

Goldberg added that since reopening on January 28, her office has guaranteed more than 200 SBA loans worth $59.3 million.

Institutional lenders climbed up to 65.1 %, a jump of three-tenths of a percent from December’s mark of 64.8%.

Loan approval rates among alternative lenders rose from 56.6% in December to 57.3% in January, a jump of seven-tenths of a percent.

Citi rolls out new personal loan, online savings account (American Banker), Rated: A

Citigroup has launched a new consumer loan product and a new high-yielding savings-account as part of its rollout of its new digital bank.

The New York bank recently introduced Citi Flex Loan, which allows select existing Citi credit card customers to convert part of their credit lines to a loan with a fixed annual percentage rate, Mark Mason, Citigroup’s incoming chief financial officer, said Tuesday at an investor conference.

Square’s banking bid avoids backlash that doomed Walmart’s (American Banker), Rated: A

As Square seeks federal approval for a Utah industrial loan company, the fintech’s bid has so far avoided the kind of loud, public opposition that marred past ILC bids by higher-profile nonbanks.

Community banks still criticize the ILC charter as a banking loophole for non-financial firms, and the Independent Community Bankers of America opposes Square’s application.

Almost 60% of small business owners launch with less than $ 25,000 (CNBC), Rated: A

At least that’s according to entrepreneurs polled recently by Kabbage, a financial services and data platform serving small businesses. More than half of those polled, or 58 percent, started their businesses with less than $25,000. A third started with less than $5,000.

These numbers track with the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, which found that the median cost to start or acquire a company is about $25,000. It did find fewer businesses that begin with less than $25,000, only 46 percent, though that could be due to its inclusion of new owners who purchase existing operations as well owner starting from scratch.

Velocity Investments sues woman for breach of contract, seeks ,500 in damages (Louisiana Record), Rated: A

Velocity Investments LLC, assignee of Lending Club Corporation, filed a complaint against Heather Darling on Feb. 12 in the 24th Judicial District Court. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff states that the defendant has failed to pay off the balance of $22,495.23 plus interest on a contract between the parties. The defendant is accused of sums due on an open account and breach of contract.

Online Loan Companies Are No Easy Fix for Desperate Borrowers (Real Daily), Rated: A

Lending Club is currently the largest online lender in the world. By some estimates, Lending Club, which launched in 2007, facilitated anywhere between $35 billion and $55 billion in online loans in 2018.

Now as more financial institutions are beginning to extend loans, Americans are falling even deeper into debt again. Americans, as individuals and households, owed over $13 trillion dollars, collectively, in 2018.

Best News We’ve Heard All Day: More Single Women Own Homes Than Single Men (Pure Wow), Rated: A

Online loan marketplace LendingTree reports that on average, single women own around 22 percent of homes, while single men own less than 13 percent. The study states that the gender gap in housing across the country is particularly interesting “given the average woman in the U.S. only makes 80 percent of what the average man does.” Interesting, indeed. Peer-to-Peer Lending and Brexit (4th Way email), Rated: A

Shares plunged and the pound plummeted to a 31-year low when the UK voted to leave the EU. More recently chaotic Brexit negotiations indicate a disorderly exit that could see investors avoid traditional investments in the UK, but what does this mean for peer-for-peer lending and should lenders be worried?

Bank and P2P lending is far less volatile than equity investing, because:

  • It is short-term orientated.
  • Lenders easily diversify widely across thousands of investments – loans – as opposed to a typical stock investor who diversifies across hundreds of shares through share funds.
  • In P2P lending, buy/sell price swings, often fuelled by uncertainty, are usually irrelevant, since lenders hold loans for the full term.
  • Lenders are usually in a better place in the queue compared to equity investors when recovering losses is involved, which can mean smaller losses on individual investments (loans) that go wrong.
  • With lending being data driven, recession conditions are easier to plan for. A turbulent P2P Brexit would mean a tripling of defaulting loans in some kinds of lending and cut-price sales of borrowers’ assets. Interest rates and reserve funds are prepped for most disasters, leaving a very low chance of a sizeable overall loss on a well-diversified, low-risk lending portfolio.

Most investors in peer-to-peer lending are using platforms that are run by people with relevant banking experience. The banks, when we look at their bread-and-butter lending, have found it easy to maintain net profits even during multiple downturns over the past 20 years, which includes the Great Recession. This is across the spectrum of lending, from buy-to-let mortgages to personal loans and credit cards. Perhaps surprisingly, retail and small business lending combined was still profitable for the UK’s high street banks during the 2008 and 2009 crash.

UK inflation below official target for first time in 2 years (Miami Herald), Rated: A

Lower energy costs as well as a waning impact from the pound’s sharp fall in the aftermath of the country’s Brexit vote have helped consumer price inflation in Britain fall below the Bank of England’s target of 2 percent for the first time in two years.

The Office for National Statistics said Wednesday that consumer prices rose by 1.8 percent in the year to January, down from the 2.1 percent recorded in the previous month. Inflation has been consistently falling since August as the effects of the pound’s decline drop out of annual comparisons. The latest decline was further accentuated by a fall in the price of electricity, gas and other fuels.

Inflation is now at its lowest since January 2017, when inflation was also 1.8 percent.

Unicorn challenger bank Revolut has strongly denied claims that its activities in securing a banking license in Lithuania are attempts to interfere in the country’s politics.

Revolut was granted a European Banking License in Lithuania in December but has since faced claims of interfering in the country’s political processes by Lithuanian Member of Parliament Stasys Jakeliūnas, chair of the Lithuanian parliament’s budget and finance committee.

German Lending Marketplace auxmoney Overtakes Midsize Banks in Consumer Loan Origination (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: AAA

Düsseldorf-based Fintech auxmoney has surpassed its targets in 2018. Loan volume increased by 74 percent compared to 2017. Raffael Johnen, Founder and CEO of auxmoney, commented:

German p2p lending marketplace Auxmoney announced that it has facilitated 551M EUR in consumer loans in the year 2018. Up 74% compared to 2017. Approximately 73,000 loans were financed. That would mean Auxmoney now stands for a market share of roughly 0.5% of the market.

Gymshark teams up with Klarna to announce pay later service (RLI), Rated: B

Fitness wear brand Gymshark has announced the launch of a pay later service in the UK, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark. The company is now in a partnership with Klarna, a payments provider which will offer Gymshark the new payment option. The payment service will allow online shoppers to try on items at home before paying for the order.

Shadow banking in China has ballooned into a $10 trillion ecosystem which connects thousands of financial institutions with companies, local governments and hundreds of millions of households. The practice is now at the center of a Chinese government-led regulatory crackdown aimed at defusing financial risks that threaten the wider economy. Unlike in the U.S., traditional commercial banks drive shadow banking, or unregulated lending, in China. That’s because the banks have been able to keep shadow-banking assets off their balance sheets, thereby sidestepping regulatory constraints on lending.

About 169 million Chinese, or about 12 per cent of the population, have invested in wealth management products online, a rise of 66 per cent from two years ago, according to a Moody’s report published this month. Essentially, they are putting money into the shadow banking system.

Next Growth Wave: Fintech (Seeking Alpha), Rated: AAA

In this article we look at some fintech companies, beyond investor’s normal horizon of the United States. In Australia there is a small cluster of listed fintech companies that have started to explode. Some have made gains of 400% in a year and more than 1,000% on the back of strong revenue and turnover growth. Moreover because Australian companies lack access to large scale V.C. investments, technology companies often need to capital raise through a public listing.

Zip Co. (ASX: Z1P)

Zip Co. is quite similar to Afterpay and in some ways its closest competitor with an established market position. However in addition to payment splitting, it also offers interest based loans and is different in other ways.

  • Zip Co. is smaller with a market capitalization of $380 M AUD (about $266 M USD), but still has 12,600 retail partners including most of Australia’s largest retailers, however it hasn’t yet entered the U.S. or the U.K.
  • Zip Co. has Zip Pay, which provides a payment splitting application with no interest, but with more flexibility in length of time or repayment amount than Afterpay’s solution.
  • Zip Co. also has Zip Money also provides loans for purchases above $1,000 AUD, with a 3 month interest free period, but with an establishment fee of up to $99.

Labor’s negative gearing policies could hurt first-home buyers (Your Mortgage), Rated: A

India’s fintech future looks bright, but it needs to find its raison d’être (India Times), Rated: AAA

Yet there is more room for growth. The market in India is still small; far more deals are being done in China, and for far higher valuations. Last year alone, venture capital investments into Chinese fintechs were more than 10 times larger than those in India, with 75 percent more deals.

Although the value of investments in India declined by 21 percent in 2018 over the previous year, the number of deals actually rose 12 percent, making 2018 the most active year on record for fintech financing.

Two years following the enactment of Financial Service Authority (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan/”OJK) Regulation No. 77/POJK.01/2016 of 2016 (POJK 77/2016), Peer-to-Peer Lending (P2P Lending) has grown popular in Indonesia. Based on data from OJK per Oct. 2018, a total of 15,990,143,141,355 rupiah has been distributed to the borrowers in P2P Lending. It has grown 432.5% from Jan. 2018 until Oct. 2018. Until Dec. 2018, the number of P2P Lending Platform which has been registered and supervised by OJK has reached 88 companies, one of them has been given a license.

Capital One restricts third-party data access, upsets customers (Payments Source) Rated: AAA

Capital One Financial Corp. is limiting how account data flows to outside apps for managing finances, prompting a backlash from the bank’s customers who say they have been locked out of their own information.

A technology upgrade led to the disruption, people familiar with the situation said. Plaid Technologies, whose software is used to connect banks with third parties, is unable to link with some Capital One accounts, according to the people, who requested anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak publicly.

Slightly weak US GDP growth, Amazon Deep-Dive (PeerIQ), Rated: AAA

US Q1 GDP growth was revised slightly lower from 2.2% to 2% driven by lower-than-expected growth in services. This slowdown in growth seems to be temporary as the Atlanta Fed is projecting a blistering 4.5% GDP growth rate for Q2.

Amazon Treading Carefully with Its Financial Services Ambitions

A new report by CB Insights details Amazon’s “barreling into” the financial services sector, notably in payments and lending. Our view on Amazon is more sober.

In the absence of a clear regulatory swim lane, Amazon will continue to partner with financial institutions to provide lending services. The major lending products Amazon offers today are executed with highly regulated banking partners. Amazon for instance has developed co-brand relationships with JPM, Synchrony and AmEx.

Also, Amazon is courting major financial services institutions as customers of its cloud business so the company has a delicate balance that it needs to maintain between disrupting the financial services industry and losing its clients and partners.

Amazon’s Lending Products

Amazon has made a foray into consumer lending mainly with the help of co-branded credit cards. The company has also made ~$3 Bn in small business loans, but that standalone effort has now fallen to the wayside with the new small business lending partnership with AmEx.

Amazon’s international investments in fintech products have been concentrated in India where Amazon will finance commercial loans to Amazon’s sellers. However, unlike the model in the US where Amazon lends on its own balance sheet, Amazon will utilize a marketplace model with six participating banks at the outset. The lending program has grown 150% in the first five months of this year (total volumes are unreported).

LendingPoint Upsizes its Mezzanine Financing, Bringing it to More Than $ 50 Million (Business Wire) Rated: A

LendingPoint announced it closed an increase of its mezzanine financing, bringing the total of the facility to $52.5 million.

Paragon Outcomes Management LLC provided the financing that closed earlier this month. Paragon and LendingPoint have been building upon a successful relationship started with their first mezzanine credit facility in January 2017 of just $20 million, which was upsized just seven months later, and now has been upsized again to $52.5 million.

Seven securitizations totaling $4.3 billion closed in Q1 2018, up 34% versus a year ago and representing the second-highest issuance in any quarter (after Q4 2017). Total ABS issuance is expected to climb to $18 billion in 2018, up 30% from 2017.

Delinquencies increased in Q1 2018 across the consumer credit space, and reports of an influx of defaults on marketplace loans have prompted online lenders, including Lending Club and Prosper, to tighten their underwriting guidelines. The bright spot has been the student loan sector. The sector, led by SoFi which issued its largest ever student deal in Q1 at $1 billion, has been performing well, driven by refinance loans made to borrowers with strong credit profiles.

A retirement perk for millennials who are buried under student debt (LA Times) Rated: A

A new benefit program at Abbott means she won’t have to choose between paying down student debt and saving for the future. For any U.S.-based employee who puts at least 2% of their salary toward student loan payments, the healthcare company will contribute the equivalent of 5% of their salary into their 401(k) plan.

Abbott’s twist works around the tax penalty, because 401(k) payments are tax-free. Steve Fussell, a human resources vice president at Abbott, says the benefit also helps employees kick off their retirement savings early, which can make a huge difference over several decades of work. Only about a third of millennials are currently contributing to the company’s retirement plan, compared with 90% of the workforce overall.

Millennials are a major demographic, yet they are not being served by credit unions. Only 32% of millennials are currently using a credit union compared to 50% of baby boomers, according to the Financial Brand.

Time reported the average 2016 college graduate will enter the workforce with $37,172 in student loan debt. They will change jobs four times in their first decade after college and their salaries are 20% lower than those of baby boomers at the same age, according to CNN.

Peer-to-peer lender Zopa scraped back into profit last year, but rising default levels have led it to crack down on who it allows to borrow, writes Rosamund Urwin. The company, which has lent out £3.3bn in total, matches borrowers with investors wanting to lend. It has applied for a banking licence and wants to launch its bank within a year. A float has been pencilled in for 2020.

Funding Circle changes projected returns (Peer2Peer Finance) Rated: A

FUNDING Circle has altered its projected returns, meaning that investors lending across the platform’s full risk spectrum are expected to earn less money and those opting for lower-risk loans could earn more.

The peer-to-peer business lender said on Friday that that its projected returns for its Balanced account – which invests in the full range of businesses across all risk bands – will now be six to seven per cent.

The target rate on the Balanced account had previously been 7.2 per cent.

Meanwhile, Funding Circle’s Conservative account – which only invests in businesses assessed as lower risk – is now offering a projected return ranging between five and 5.5 per cent.

Funding Circle fund warns on dividend as currency costs bite (Citywire) Rated: A

Shares in Funding Circle SME Income (FCIF) fell today after peer-to-peer lending fund said the rising currency costs would force it to cut its dividend.

Shares fell 2.1%, or 3p, to 102p after it reported a ‘material increase’ in the cost of hedging, or removing the impact of the investment company’s holdsin dollar-denominated loans.

As a result the company, which mainly lends to small and medium-sized businesses in the UK, would only be able to pay a fully covered annual dividend of 5p to 6p per share from the third quarter of 2018. This is down from the current annual dividend of 6.5p, a potential decline of 8%-23%.

Recent AIM entrant Trufin is a financing business with four divisions. DFC lends to firms selling motorbikes, caravans, yachts and industrial kit, areas that mainstream banks may not be willing to touch.

Oxygen Finance helps councils make savings by prompting them to pay suppliers early, and Satago helps smaller businesses manage their cash flow. Lastly, it holds a 15 per cent stake in peer-to-peer lender Zopa.

Trufin is applying for a UK banking licence, which could help lower the company’s funding costs and boost margins. Zopa has also proposed a new funding round, which could increase the value of Trufin’s stake.

Open Banking could be worth £7.2bn by 2022, report shows (London School of Business & Finance) Rated: A

A report from Big Four accountancy firm PwC has predicted that the Open Banking sector could be worth £2.8bn by the end of the year and £7.2bn by 2022.

SMEs were shown to be more aware of the effects of Open Banking than retail customers and are also willing to make use of the data-sharing scheme, with 40% saying that they would share their financial transaction information.

When it comes to what information individuals would be willing to share, just 10% cited transaction history, while 12% said that they would share information about their financial products.

Banks were also found to still be popular with businesses, with 72% favouring them over fintech companies and peer-to-peer lending firms. This was also found to be the case for 65% of individuals.

HEAVYWEIGHT INVESTOR SAYS ‘TOO MUCH MONEY’ THROWN AT TECH (Business Cloud) Rated: A

One of Britain’s most high-profile investors has expressed concerns about “too much money being chucked” at tech businesses in the UK.

Moulton has also been an active tech investor over the last three decades, having backed peer-to-peer lending marketplace Funding Circle “very early on”, and estimates that around 50 of his 120 current investments have a link to technology.

However speaking to BusinessCloud at an investment roundtable in London organised by the Lancashire Investment Readiness Programme, the 67-year-old said the return on investment in technology is is relatively “poor”, particularly in the UK, and fears that it could become worse.

More P2P lenders collapse amid tough regulations (Global Times) Rated: AAA

As China has been ramping up efforts to strengthen regulations on the online financial industry, an increasing number of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending platforms have found themselves collapsing. As such, experts have warned investors of the perils of illegal financial activities that offer lucrative rewards.

After several P2P firms such as lianbijr.com and txslicai.com.cn were investigated by police in June, another Shanghai-based online lender reportedly collapsed.

Yilongcaifu and its parent company Fuxing Group have been shut down and are under investigation by police, news site stcn.com reported on Thursday.

51 Credit Card opened books on Friday for its HK$1.4bn ($173.9m) listing in Hong Kong, with 10 firms in the syndicate.The Chinese online peer-to-peer lending platform is offering 118.7m primary shares for HK$8.5 to HK$11.5 each, which could raise between HK$1bn and HK$1.4bn.

Azlo and Green Dot Offer New Lending Products for Gig Economy Workers (Bank Innovation) Rated: A

Azlo will begin offering lending services to small businesses and gig economy workers this fall, the company announced last week. The fintech, which is backed by BBVA Compass, will be partnering with an undisclosed “non-traditional lending platform” to originate loans. These loans will range between $10,000 and $100,000, and even less Azlo CEO Brian Hamilton told Bank Innovation.

To determine a borrower’s creditworthiness, Azlo will not be looking at FICO scores. Instead, it will look at data collected from payment tools using APIs connected to platforms like Stripe, Square, and PayPal, in an Azlo account.

Bermuda-based Viva Network wants to exploit the blockchain’s ability to store records and transfer value quickly across international borders.

Targeting Bermuda as its first market, the company would use local mortgage professionals to run “mortgage hubs” that would evaluate and underwrite mortgages. It would divide each mortgage into 100,000 FMS units that could then be listed on the company’s blockchain-based exchange. Investors would purchase an FMS using Viva’s blockchain-based VIVA tokens and would harvest principal and interest payments from the property’s owner each month.

Many Amazon customers would welcome banking services (RetailDive), Rated: AAA

  • More than half of 1,000 U.S. Amazon customers recently surveyed said they would be willing to use an Amazon-created virtual currency for purchases, according to a survey conducted by student loan marketplace LendEDU.

A question concerned investors have been speculating on for over 36 hours now, since the website of UK p2p lending platform Collateral went down around 7pm two days ago and is showing a maintenance message. Investors criticize that there was no pre-announcement of this maintenance and worse that Collateral seemed to have ceased all communications to investors and did not react to any phone or email messages.

With no communications from the platform whatsoever investors wondered what to do. Some investors reported the incident to ActionFraud squad of the police while another contacted the FCA to voice his concern and seek advice.

Collateral investors in limbo after lender shuts down site (P2P Finance News), Rated: A

Meanwhile, it emerged that the three limited companies listed on the Financial Services Register that have traded under the name of Collateral have not had regulatory permission to operate as a consumer credit business for at least 11 months and have all now been dissolved.

Cash4Assets, which traded under the name Collateral, had cancelled its interim permissions with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). A permission end date is given of 23 March 2015.

Regal Pawnbroker, which also listed Collateral as one of its trading names, saw its interim permissions lapse on 31 March 2016.

And Goldmann and Sons saw its interim authorisation lapse on 31 March 2016.

Total fintech funding in Asia was US$3.85 billion in 2017—a massive drop-off from the more than US$10 billion invested in 2016 while the amount in Q4 2017 declined to US$748 million across 38 deals after a solid US$1 billion+ in Q3, said KPMG.

Amazon has partnered with Bank of America for its lending program (CNBC), Rated: AAA

CNBC has learned that Amazon Lending, which launched in 2011, ultimately found a partner in Bank of America Merrill Lynch, according to people familiar with the matter who asked not to be named because the alliance is confidential. Partnering with Bank of America allows Amazon to reduce its risk and access capital specifically to provide credit to more merchants so they can acquire inventory.

Amazon Lending is an invitation-only program that makes loans of $1,000 to $750,000, with terms of up to a year, for companies that may have difficulty landing traditional business loans. In June 2017, Amazon said it issued more than $1 billion in loans during the previous 12-month period, compared to $1.5 billion in combined loans for the four years prior to that.

Scaling back

But even with the Bank of America deal, Amazon Lending has been tapping the brakes on growth of late. After almost doubling to $661 million in 2016, outstanding loans just barely increased last year to $692 million, according to Amazon’s annual report earlier this month.

Americans Can’t Get Enough Consumer Debt (WSJ), Rated: AAA

If anything, consumers are borrowing more on credit cards or through auto loans than they have in years, and lenders seeking growth are happy to oblige them.

In the fourth quarter, consumer debt, excluding mortgages and other home loans, rose 5.5% from a year earlier to $3.82 trillion. That is the highest amount since the Federal Reserve Bank of New York began tracking the data in 1999. Moreover, consumers’ non-housing debts accounted for just over 29% of their overall debt load, also the highest amount on record.

Overall, households are paying about 5.8% of their disposable personal income to stay current on their nonmortgage debts, according to third-quarter Federal Reserve data. This figure, which is at the highest level since the end of 2008, bottomed out at 4.9% in 2012.


URGENT VS. IMPORTANT: BARRIERS TO DIGITIZATION IN ALTERNATIVE INVESTING (All About Alpha), Rated: AAA

KPMG International and CREATE-Research have jointly prepared a report about the digitization imperative for alternative investment management.

Early on, its authors list eight key digital innovations that are reconstructing the industry:

Is now the time when U.S. banks, credit unions and their regulators finally see eye to eye on small-dollar loans to consumers who have checkered credit histories?

U.S. Bancorp hit with $ 613M in penalties linked to payday lender Scott Tucker (USA Today), Rated: A

U.S. Bancorp, the parent of U.S. Bank, agreed to the criminal and civil penalties in settlements announced by the Manhattan U.S. Attorneys Office in New York, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the Federal Reserve and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.

From 2009 until 2014, U.S.Bank set an artificial cap on the number of alerts generated by its customer transaction monitoring systems, authorities said. The Minneapolis-based bank based the number of alerts on low staffing levels, rather than on the level of risk in the transactions.

The lax oversight aided Tucker, a longtime U.S. Bank customer who was sentenced to more than 16 years in prison last month for running an illegal $3.5 billion Internet-based payday lending scheme that victimized thousands of consumers with loan interest rates as high as 1,000%.

Small nonbanks call for clearer exemption from CFPB audits (American Banker), Rated: A

Nonbank mortgage firms are seeking formal assurance from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that they will not become subject to surprise audits or enforcement without involvement of a state regulator.

In a joint letter to acting CFPB Director Mick Mulvaney, the Community Home Lenders Association and the Community Mortgage Lenders of America said the agency should practice “streamlined supervision” of smaller nonbanks, which is consistent with the Dodd-Frank Act.

 

Business Innovation Could Accelerate Under a Friendlier CFPB, LeClairRyan Attorney Says (Business Insider), Rated: B

Recent moves by the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) could signal a friendlier approach to businesses, according to Jay Spruill, a partner in LeClairRyan’s Richmond office and leader of the national law firm’s Marketplace Funding Team.

“The Payday Loan Rule has been heavily criticized by the small loan industry which says the rule will restrict consumers’ access to credit,” Spruill notes in the blog, CFPB Signals Retreat from Aggressive Regulation. P2P Lender Lendy Releases Financial Results: Pretax Profits Rise to £3.3 Million (Crowdfund Insider), Rated: AAA

Peer to peer lending platform Lendy has released its audited accounts for 2016, showing profits before tax rising to £3.3 million compared to £53,000 in 2015. The company reports that since launch in 2012, Lendy has originated over £376 million in secured loans generating £36 million in interest for investors. Approximately £141.5 million in principle has been repayed with current outstanding loans at £186.5 million.

 

The digital upstarts taking on Britain’s dominant few banks (The Economist), Rated: AAA

For some British millennials, Monzo is as close to a cult as a bank can be. Its coral-pink cards are hard to miss. “People in bars will get very excited if they see you are a fellow Monzo user,” says Mr Matthews, who is 29.

Counting the British arm of Santander, Spain’s largest bank takes the share to over 80%. In 2015 Britons had 70m-odd active current accounts. They paid £500 ($750) or more into 70% of them every month.

Supervisors have licensed more than 30 entrants since 2013. But by no means are all the challengers young. One of them, CYBG, owns Clydesdale, a Scottish bank that turns 180 this year, and Yorkshire Bank, aged 159. It has about 1.8m personal current-account customers and assets of £43bn. Nor are all the infants purely digital. Metro Bank has since 2010 established 55 “stores” (ie, branches) and is spreading beyond south-east England.

Among digital purists, Monzo’s chief rival is Starling Bank—where Mr Blomfield used to work. It started current accounts last spring; around 100,000 have been opened. Tandem, which recently acquired Harrods Bank, the banking arm of a posh department store, is also open for business. Atom Bank, part-owned by Spain’s BBVA, focuses on mortgages funded by fixed-rate savings. N26, a German smartphone bank, is due to arrive this year. Another near-cult, Revolut, is seeking a European licence (valid, for now, in Britain).

To ginger up small-business banking, RBS, the market leader, must cede ground and money to competitors as part of the price, agreed on with the European Commission, of its rescue by the government in 2008. RBS will put up £425m, divided into sums from £5m to £120m, to build up rivals’ capabilities, plus £350m for incentives to customers to switch banks. Banks with assets of up to £350bn may bid. That excludes the big four but just lets in Santander (£315bn), to some challengers’ chagrin.

 

Industry reacts to SME finance inquiry (Bridging&Commercial), Rated: A

Earlier this month, the Treasury committee launched an inquiry into SME finance to look at the state of the market and the lessons to be learned from RBS’s Global Restructuring Group (GRG).

The Treasury’s inquiry will look at the extent of competition in the market, the various sources of funding available to SMEs – including P2P lending and crowdfunding – and whether the current regulatory framework provides enough protection to SMEs when they borrow money.

For example, unsecured lending to an SME borrower for the purposes of their business will only be regulated if the SME is unincorporated and the amount being borrowed is £25,000 or less.

Hexindai: Positive Quarter Strengthens Bull Case (Seeking Alpha), Rated: AAA

Sales increased 575% to $43.31 million, driven by loan facilitation growth, which was $388 million – an increase of 187.1% over the prior year. The high sales growth rate contributed to a whopping 1,589% net income growth, which was $26.9 million for the quarter. Gross billing ratio contributed to overall growth with an increase from 7.4% in the previous year to 12.1% in the reported one as the company continues its shift to credit loans.

The company increased its guidance, bumping EPS estimates for the year from $0.74 (see linked article for full estimate calculations) to $1.30 per share, as sales are now expected at $108 million – up from previously expected $90 million. The company believes this will be driven by a bump in loan facilitation, which it expects to be $1.23 billion, up from previously expected $1 billion.

In my previous article I initiated the company with a price target range of $14.80 to $22.20 per share given a 20x to 30x forward earnings multiple, and given recent positive catalysts I believe fair value lies in the same multiple. As the company has hiked its sales and net income guidance, pushing EPS to $1.30 for fiscal 2018, I believe the company’s fair value now lies in the range of $26.00 to $39.00 per share. That represents almost 200% upside from the current share price.

It started as an online seller of books and CDs in 1995 and now the “everything store” has sales of more than $400 billion.

Amazon’s Lending Business

The company is virtually omnipresent in all businesses, be it furniture, electronics, food or entertainment. In 2012, it added yet another service to its stable: Small business loans.

Considering Amazon enables millions of small companies to sell their products across the globe, having its own lending arm was a no-brainer. Amazon’s entry into small-business lending could transform the banking industry in the same way it revolutionized retail. Just recently, the Seattle-based e-commerce giant announced that it has made $1 billion in small-business loans to more than 20,000 merchants in the United States, Japan, and the UK during the past 12 months. Since Amazon Lending launched in 2011, it has surpassed $3 billion in loans to small businesses. Further, more than 50 percent of the companies eventually take a second loan from Amazon.

Launching its own lending arm is a stroke of genius by Amazon, the company will earn interest on the loans while retailers (with the aid of the loans) will be able to sell more products on the Amazon website and thus will add to Amazon’s earnings. Its big pockets and negative working capital mean it has lots of cash to lend; a mammoth retailer database means it is fairly easy for Amazon to tap into the lucrative space.

“We created Amazon Lending to make it simple for up-and-coming small businesses to efficiently get a business loan, because we know that an infusion of capital at the right moment can put a small business on the path to even greater success,” said Peeyush Nahar, vice president for Amazon Marketplace, in a company announcement.

How Does Amazon Lending Work?

Amazon’s loan program is by invitation only. It offers short-term business loans ranging from $1,000 to $750,000 for up to 12 months to micro, small, and medium businesses selling on Amazon to help them grow their businesses. Loans are approved within 24 hours and, usually, loan money is used for inventory financing and business expansion.

Unlike traditional lenders, which use lengthy loan applications and require a host of documents, Amazon uses internal algorithms to invite sellers to the program based on the popularity of their products, inventory cycles, and other factors. It does not charge an origination fee or prepayment penalties. Furthermore, after establishing its foothold in SME lending, the company plans to branch out  into other markets where there are a lot more opportunities, such as Canada, India, France, and China.

To Be or Not To Be: A Bank

For now, the lending business is relatively a small part of its operations. But considering its vast resources and huge database, it will be interesting to see whether Amazon scales up its credit business and applies for a banking license.

According to a survey of 32,715 people in 18 countries conducted by Accenture, 31% of the respondents would switch to Google, Amazon, or Facebook for banking, if these companies offered financial services. In another report by CB Insights, Amazon has the highest customer satisfaction at 86% compared to Citi (82 percent), Capital One (80 percent), “all banks” (80 percent), TD Bank (79 percent) and Bank of America and Chase (each 75 percent). With more and more millennials opting against traditional banks, becoming a full-fledged financial institution does seem like a viable option. But will Amazon follow that path?

Regulatory Backdrop

Ever since marketplace lenders gained prominence in the financial circle, there has been a debate raging on whether or not to grant technology companies special banking charters that will allow them to compete with banks nationwide. Right now, the situation is vague with regards to regulations for technology companies. Wal-Mart, in 2006, applied for a banking license to establish an industrial loan company (ILC) in Utah. Eventually, lawmakers and banking groups blocked future banking efforts by Wal-Mart and tried to prohibit commercial companies from obtaining new ILC licenses.

Amazon can cause a similar backlash for itself and would rather want to concentrate on other aspects of its business than deal with the headaches of being a bank. Moreover, providing financial services is merely another avenue for plugging companies into the Amazon ecosystem. So the lending arm (as a non-bank) fits nicely into the overall scheme of things.

The Real Threat of Amazon

Amazon really doesn’t want to displace banks as they are one of the main consumers of Amazon Web Services (AWS). Rather, it wants to disrupt banking services. Amazon Web Services is the biggest provider of cloud computing and controls 45 percent of the global cloud infrastructure market. It is used by most of the major businesses and has become an absolute necessity for the financial sector.

“Amazon Web Services (AWS) is forming the backbone of the financial services ecosystem, with a diverse set of firms – from JP Morgan to startups such as Xignite – adopting AWS for data storage and processing,” a consulting report stated.

Apart from this, legacy banks are losing direct interaction with their customers. For example, USAA and Capital One are both experimenting with Amazon’s digital assistant Alexa as a new consumer banking channel. Amazon is not taking any direct market share from banks; rather, it is becoming the customer interface for banks and putting them in the background.

It will be interesting to see how Amazon shapes its lending business with enterprise AWS contributing a sizeable chunk to the bottom line. But with hundreds of millions of customers and merchants on its platform, you can bet it will be at the vanguard of online lending.

Even though the SME sector is the proverbial “backbone” of the US economy, it still faces a lot of difficulties in accessing credit. Six in 10 businesses find it difficult to borrow, which is essential to expedite their growth plans. Around 58% of SMEs rely on bank loans, and 50% of SMEs use working capital to fund their businesses. This has led to a spurt in considering non-traditional channels like private equity (36%) and crowdsourcing (35%) for funding requirements. Though financing conditions have eased up after the 2008 financial crisis, there is still a massive demand-supply mismatch and alternative lenders are swiftly moving in to exploit the opportunities.

Following the growth trajectory of other industry players, PayPal, the online payments giant, has acquired Swift Financial, a leading provider of working capital solutions for small and medium enterprises in the U.S., in its bid to expand their working capital unit.

Swift Financial

Swift Financial was founded in 2006 by Ed Harycki and is headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware. Since its inception, it has provided funding to more than 20,000 small businesses. Because of its unique technology platform that combines data, technology, and outstanding customer service, it has been recognized for its excellence by J.D. Power and was awarded “contact center operation customer satisfaction excellence in the live phone channel” under the J.D. Power Certified Contact Center Program. The company has developed sophisticated credit scoring and pricing tools and data.

Swift Financial had raised over $56 million before it agreed to sell itself to PayPal. Loan amount ranges from $5,000-$75,000, and the loan-term ranges from 13-52 weeks. The loan APR ranges from 2.5% to 18.75% and the median APR is 13.52%. It has originated loans worth $800 million (approximately). On average, Swift funds applications within 3 days.

PayPal enables its users to transact through their bank accounts, credit card companies, and more, while keeping their personal information discreet. In 2013, PayPal launched its lending arm. The Working Capital Unit provides cash advances to its clients based on their sales volume. It uses the data collected through its payment platform for assessing the creditworthiness of the borrowers. Since its launch in 2013, PayPal’s Working Capital Unit has provided more than $3 billion in funding to more than 115,000 small businesses (with maximum funding of up to $125,000). PayPal describes it lending arm, Working Capital Unit, as a strategic offering that drives merchants to increase their sales growth and helps in increasing processing volume.

How PayPal is Charting Its Own Path

After being acquired by eBay in 2002, PayPal split from the multi-national ecommerce J.D. J.D. PowerPowers company in 2015. It listed itself on NASDAQ under the ticker PYPL. Since then, it has been trying to chart its own path. 2017, particularly, has been busy for the company as it has been expanding partnerships and acquiring businesses that will help the company create a financial services behemoth.

Apart from the above-mentioned partnerships and acquisitions, one of its biggest pushes into alternative lending is acquiring Swift Financial to bolster its lending arm Working Capital Unit. The company should have been a leader in the space considering the share of online payments it controls, but had lagged behind rivals like Kabbage and OnDeck in the previous years.

The Reason PayPal Acquired Swift Financial

PayPal’s current market cap is around $70 billion; company’s 2nd quarter revenue was $3.14 billion, a jump of 20% year over year. It has added 22 million active accounts, and its mobile payment volumes have increased by 50% since the second quarter of 2016. Its Venmo payment volume was up by 103% to $8 billion in the second quarter of this year. It has the resources to dominate the segment, and Swift Financial will give it that much-needed shot in the arm.

The company earlier entered into a commercial white-label partnership with Swift Financial for providing affordable funding solutions to small businesses. It is anticipated that the acquisition of Swift Financial will enable PayPal to expand its lending ecosystem. The acquisition will allow PayPal to increase its maximum loan size from the current $125,000 to almost $500,000. PayPal sales were dependent on serving merchants on it’s own platform. This allows PayPal to create a different sales funnel and introduce new merchants to its bouquet of products. Cross-selling opportunities are immense and will surely add a lot of value to the deal in the future.

Moreover, Swift Financial’s technology platform will provide supplementary data to PayPal’s underwriting algorithm that will help it to fully understand a business’s strength and will also support PayPal in offering add-on financial services to its clients.

Impact on SME Lending

According to the Small Business Administration, there were approximately 28.8 million small businesses in the United States representing 99.7% of all businesses. Considering the multi-trillion-dollar market opportunity, and the gap while accessing credit from traditional sources, makes the Swift Financial acquisition by PayPal extremely strategic.

Since their inception, Kabbage and OnDeck have originated loans worth over $10 billion combined. A number of tech companies have set up their own lending arms to encourage spending. Amazon set up Amazon Lending in 2011 and has so far loaned out $3 billion to SMEs. Square Capital, which was launched in 2014, passed $1 billion in loans originated in November 2016. It became imperative for the company of PayPal’s size and stature to do something radical and big in order to stay in touch with its rivals. PayPal’s move is considered a bold move and a strong statement of intent.

Conclusion

Acquisition of Swift Finance will provide a strong foundation to PayPal’s ambition of becoming a leader in the SME lending segment. PayPal’s infrastructure, database, and big pockets means that you can bet safely that the company will be a force to reckon with in this growing industry segment.
